Saint_John Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 Last year we won the League 1 pitch of the year. This season we are only "Highly Commended" ( ? joint runnerup ?) http://www.football-league.co.uk/latestnews/20110426/league-groundsman-of-the-year-awards_2293301_2346994 Carlisle United's David Mitchell scooped the award for League 1, whilst Joe Aylett of Milton Keynes Dons and Southampton's Andrew Gray - last year's winner - received commendation for the surfaces at stadium:mk and St Mary's. I still think this is a brilliant effort considering the playing surface was reseeded late in the summer break and imo was only just ready for the start of the season (the real reason for no Ted Bates match). Well done to all the groundstaff.
beatlesaint Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 Well looking at the pitch yesterday Carlisle must have one hell of a playing surface cos St Marys looked emaculate.
JustMike Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 SMS pitch is the best in the division by far!!
The9 Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 (edited) It's not entirely surprising we didn't win it, as the pitch (especially the penalty area at the Northam end) was cutting up in huge chunks earlier in the season (cost us a goal v Man U) which it's never done before. I think the dry weather has helped knit the top layer now, so the soil underneath can actually stay there. compared to (say) this bowling green from a previous January encounter with Man Utd. SNOWY Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 I'd imagine that this winters weather was taken into consideration. We had it bad by our standards but nothing compared to Carlisle.
JonnyLove Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 The judging also takes into account resources available and other things so it's not just about the pitch.
Saint_clark Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 Pitch was better than i've ever seen it yesterday.
rooney Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 The pitch was cutting up a couple of months ago and you could see large chuncks of sand underneath. Seems to have been ok for the last few games as the grass knits in. Probably why we did not win the award this time.
dune Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 I only got highly commended for my marrow in the village vegetable show when it was the best marrow in the show. The ones that won 1st 2nd and 3rd were old and tough, wheras mine was perfectly formed, about 2 foot long, and juicy. I've never bothered entering again as the judge is a clueless ****.
