markyboy Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 Evening all, what is the furthest southwest anybody has picked up radio solent 96.1 FM on a car radio? I'm driving down on Saturday afternoon to Plymouth taking the scenic A303 route. Would stay at the inlaws in Burbage until after the Brentford match but don't want to get down there late. Cheers. Spudders Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 Slightly different direction, but when I went to Yeovil away last season I got almost to Yeovil before I lost reception totally. Isn't the A303 a bit of a long route!!!! I'd go Bournemouth, then A35 through Dorchester and Honiton to Exeter, then join the M5 briefly. The A35 is very scenic once past Dorchester as you go over the hills and past Lyme Regis way.

I do know some who always preferred to do the A303 route though. Unfortunately I can't help the OP out as I never used to listen to Solent on a Friday afternoon/late Sunday night when doing that run. Alain Perrin Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 You can get it in Swindon in the CO-OP carpark. HTH.
StDunko Posted 26 April, 2011 Share Posted 26 April, 2011 I'd agree that you'll almost get to the Yeovil type area before you lose signal. I find that you must not change radio station though as the tuners seem to be able to hold a weak signal, but never find it again once lost. markyboy Posted 27 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 27 April, 2011 Thanks for the suggestions. I am driving from Burbage just south of Marlborough, so might keep going further south from Salisbury, Blandford and take the coastal road as suggested. I did manage to keep the signal once up to the outskirts of Slough!
Saint Charlie Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 Different direction again but I listened to Phillips get those two late debut goals away at Leicester from a car park in Cherbourg.
Saint137 Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 Listened to the game in Glastonbury on Saturday. Very clear but patchy signal due to hills. If you're driving and listening you'll get the full Saintsplayer experience
markyboy Posted 27 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 27 April, 2011 The infamous Saints Player. I had it on in garden Monday and noticed that the sound output from the Hartlepool commentators was much louder than Dave Merrington's ramblings. Might be a joy to sit in one of those inevitable South Westerly traffic jams for a change just so I can make it to the end of the match before Solent cuts out. saint simes Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 We managed to pick it up from our boat in Portland Harbour last Sat, it was a bit sketchy but good enough for me to be able to scare everyone in the vicinity when we scored at the end! Only 1, Beatts got the 2nd if your talking about 2003.
ecuk268 Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 I've listened to Solent at many places on the Northern French coast and also in a car park at Heathrow.
derry Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 Faded out on me between Dorchester and Honiton. A bit patchy on 96.1 at low points on route. I don't know about AM 999 Khz which appeared to be out of range, but FM 91.6 MHz is VHF and line of sight.
letissisgod Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 Funnily enough was in Devon last week, Exmouth to be exact, and was amazed to turn the car radio on and hear Solent loud and clear. Plymouth is approximately another hours drive from there, so not sure how strong the signal would be.
Petersfield Saint Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 I work near Heathrow; I get Solent absolutely fine in the office car park, lose it by the time I get to the M25 and then have to wait 'til I'm south of Hindhead before it comes back again! markyboy Posted 27 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 27 April, 2011 I'm going to pretend I'm towing a caravan and crawl along - should get all of the second half that way.
Golden Balls Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 I got it til about Honiton once. Could just get SaintsPlayer, mobile broadband and have the laptop on in the car...
