Lord Duckhunter Posted 8 May, 2011 Share Posted 8 May, 2011 Apologies if there has already been one of these, but I’ve yet to see one. Having spent all of my adult life watching Saints in the top two flights I have thoroughly enjoyed our spell in League 1. Whist glad we got out pretty quickly and not wanting to stay a moment longer, I am glad I’ve watched the club at this level and meet some great supporters from clubs I never thought we’d be facing in the league. Highlights for me were, obviously yesterday (and the Walsall fans were great), Boxing day sell out against Exeter, the JPT and the great Carlisle fans, and our head to head run in with Huddersfield. There is more to football than the Premiership and apart from some numptys from Boscombe and Brighton the League 1 supporters have been friendly and knowledgeable. What are your highlights and do others feel the same as me.
Deppo Posted 8 May, 2011 Share Posted 8 May, 2011 I will go a bit more specific and list moments that stick out in my memory.... The expectation of that first L1 game v Milwall, and the realisation this would be tougher than I thought. The excitement when we were signing player after player. Lambert, Hammond, Waigo, Jaidi, Harding... The utter frustration of going those first 7 games before the first win. Realising we were on track with the 4-1 win home to Gillingham. The back to back 5 goal hauls against Walsall and Huddersfield. The JPT, of course. I remember Huddersfield scoring a late winner (Lee Novak?) to all but end our playoff hopes, gutted. Then the excitement and build up to this season, followed by the depressing familiarity of our terrible start to the season. Losing 2-0 at home to Rochdale felt absolutely horrible, massive low point. The 2-0 win at home to Bournemouth, the feeling that maybe our season was finally beggining. 6-0 away at Oldham, sitting at home listening to the radio in slight shock :-) 3-2 MK Dons, will never forget that one. 1-0 Bristol Rovers, utter relief. Plymouth, best day ever. Overall, I've really enjoyed the league and will miss certain aspects of it, but I'm ready to see us playing teams of similar size and stature every week again. Roll on next season.
positivepete Posted 8 May, 2011 Share Posted 8 May, 2011 It has been a great opportunity to take my nineteen year old son to see some "real" football grounds, meet some genuine football fans, and watch football at 3pm on a Saturday!

ray kemish Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 Yeah, its a great league when your club has more money and better players than all of the others and you are not fighting for survival at the wrong end! I imagine that can be said of any league though. But I agree, it has been fun visiting some of the clubs we wouldn't normally expect to visit. I like not being ripped off for ticket prices, not having to always plan ahead; you can usually just roll up and pay at the gate for way games, not having to queue too long for pies, drinks, toilets etc, being able to park near the grounds, being able to pronounce the names on the opposition team (even if I have never heard of them), taking the mickey out of fans when our away support outnumbers their home support. And generally, without a doubt the banter usually seems more good humoured and entertaining than in the top flight where it all a little too serious these days

hoozonside10 Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 I quite liked Spotlands, Rochdale are a typical community club - and the fans were very friendly. Great pies as well, having said that we never looked like we were going to get anything out of the game, hopefully the standard of grounds in the Championship will be better for us. With the side we had out that day we'd not get anything in a month of Sundays. Sorry all you Dickson lovers but he is rank. Totally responsible for Walsall's goal this week-end, bloke just can't tackle.
