Gordon Mockles Posted 10 November, 2008 Share Posted 10 November, 2008 Did anyone else see the long Police procession through Southampton Saturday night? It was just prior to kick off (Below Bargate), around 5pm. Police escorting a group of fans past Walkabout, Dolphin hotel. Meat wagons, Cars, Coppers on Bikes, on foot…huge police presence (some filming) to safeguard what we thought were Bristol fans although someone said some of the group had Saints shirts on. Weird?! Can’t have been Saints fans…or known trouble makers? Just wondered if anyone else saw it and could shed any light (whether the fans were Bristol or Saints). I know Bristol have a reputation. That police escort must have cost the tax payer loads (considering the number of salaried policemen), Why such a police presence? I suppose, good in the prevention ethos and there may well have been good reason. Just curious to know what.
StuRomseySaint Posted 10 November, 2008 Share Posted 10 November, 2008 They were Saints fans who had been drinking in that area of town. I can't shed any more light on this, as this is my 3rd post. :-)
Chez Posted 10 November, 2008 Share Posted 10 November, 2008 Why such a police presence? cos all hell broke loose last season and they wanted to prevent the same thing happening.

positivepete Posted 10 November, 2008 Share Posted 10 November, 2008 I thought there were a lot of police relative to the size of the crowd, perhaps that's how we got got nearly 15K, they counted the law as well
saintrich Posted 10 November, 2008 Share Posted 10 November, 2008 I paid a quid to get the shuttle bus thing to the stadium cos i was feeling lazy and it had to stop at the bottom of the bridge because of the police escort, so had to walk the rest, waste of money ! Gordon Mockles Posted 10 November, 2008 Author Share Posted 10 November, 2008 Coppers in treating football fans like **** shocker! I didn't say, or infer, anyone was treated badly. Merely there was a disproportionate number of police in comparison to the number of fans. It was out of the ordinary - enough so to attract the attention of the entire pub! I now realise why, thanks for the comments. :gib:
Mole Posted 10 November, 2008 Share Posted 10 November, 2008 Coppers in treating football fans like **** shocker! Football fans? You are joking right? They are just juvenile delinquents who have moved on from hanging around shopping precincts intimidating pensioners.

eelpie Posted 10 November, 2008 Share Posted 10 November, 2008 Nothing has changed in 40 years 09.11.68 Saints v West Brom (H) Two nil Saints win. Goals: Channon header 20 mins. Davies header from Kirkup's lofted cross. Ted Bates attributed competent win to more accurate use of the ball. Those were the days 40 years ago.I wish nothing had changed. (details lifted from Duncan Holley and Gary Chalk's "In That Number') The law used to accompany the away fans to The Dell up from the station then too. No record of trouble though. StuRomseySaint Posted 10 November, 2008 Share Posted 10 November, 2008 what...by giving them an escort to the ground....mental!!!!! This is the second time you have not grasped onto treatment from the OB. From looking at them, it didn't seem as though the Police were simply saying " Hey guys, you seem really cool, so we are gonna march you to the ground the long way round, meaning you'll miss kick-off " , you make it sound like they were trying to do the Saints fans a favour. You said that about Swansea too, like it was acceptable for police to act on caution and not allow anyone from Southampton, in a minibus, anywhere near pub, and escorting them in and out of swansea. For some reason, both home and away police forces have taken to treating Saints fans like utter c*nts, might be a coincidence that the Soton F.I Officer has dissapeared. As for Stanley, I bet you're a great laugh in the pub.

The abolition of national service probably played a big part in the phenomenom of hooliganism. As did Elvis Presley. He was the first to start it if you ask me. From the early 70s onwards supporting both P'mouth AND SFC has been considered by most to be called "total insanity". I'm not quite sure how National Service would have stopped me hating the blue scum though?

OliversDad Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 The old bill kept a group of saints fans in the pub for about half an hour and then escorted them straight into SMS. My father-in-law was amongst them. Apparently there had been a fight earlier and they were worried that something was going to kick off. I realise that this is not ideal and if I'd been involved I probably would have felt pretty p****d off. However they all got the the game without any punches being thrown so surely this counts as a good thing? I don't like the treatment of genuine fans but untill the mindless minority of fans stop runing this for the rest we will have to accept that this is the treatment that will go on. I'm sure many of you will disagree but that's the joy of a forum isn't it?

There was probably about 100 in the escort at the start, by the time the escort reached the stadium, there was apparantly only about 20 left, and they were the ones who were too old / too fat, to run.
