Police escort anyone?

Did anyone else see the long Police procession through Southampton Saturday night?

It was just prior to kick off (Below Bargate), around 5pm. Police escorting a group of fans past Walkabout, Dolphin hotel. Meat wagons, Cars, Coppers on Bikes, on foot…huge police presence (some filming) to safeguard what we thought were Bristol fans although someone said some of the group had Saints shirts on. Weird?! Can’t have been Saints fans…or known trouble makers? Just wondered if anyone else saw it and could shed any light (whether the fans were Bristol or Saints). I know Bristol have a reputation.

That police escort must have cost the tax payer loads (considering the number of salaried policemen), Why such a police presence? I suppose, good in the prevention ethos and there may well have been good reason. Just curious to know what.

Coppers in treating football fans like **** shocker!

I didn't say, or infer, anyone was treated badly. Merely there was a disproportionate number of police in comparison to the number of fans. It was out of the ordinary - enough so to attract the attention of the entire pub!

I now realise why, thanks for the comments. :gib:

Nothing has changed in 40 years

09.11.68

Saints v West Brom (H)

Two nil Saints win.

Goals: Channon header 20 mins. Davies header from Kirkup's lofted cross.

Ted Bates attributed competent win to more accurate use of the ball.

Those were the days 40 years ago.I wish nothing had changed.

(details lifted from Duncan Holley and Gary Chalk's "In That Number')

The law used to accompany the away fans to The Dell up from the station then too. No record of trouble though. Any actual memories 70's Mike?

During the 50's supporting both Saints and Pompey was the norm. The abolition of national service probably played a big part in the phenomenom of hooliganism.

what...by giving them an escort to the ground....mental!!!!!

This is the second time you have not grasped onto treatment from the OB.

From looking at them, it didn't seem as though the Police were simply saying " Hey guys, you seem really cool, so we are gonna march you to the ground the long way round, meaning you'll miss kick-off " , you make it sound like they were trying to do the Saints fans a favour.

You said that about Swansea too, like it was acceptable for police to act on caution and not allow anyone from Southampton, in a minibus, anywhere near pub, and escorting them in and out of swansea.

For some reason, both home and away police forces have taken to treating Saints fans like utter c*nts, might be a coincidence that the Soton F.I Officer has dissapeared.

As for Stanley, I bet you're a great laugh in the pub.

I enjoy going football and meeting new people, both Saints and aways clubs fans. Places like Cardiff are **** away days because hooligans have made them **** away days. Places like Norwich are good away days as you drink in all the pubs and mix with away fans.

As did Elvis Presley. He was the first to start it if you ask me.

From the early 70s onwards supporting both P'mouth AND SFC has been considered by most to be called "total insanity". I'm not quite sure how National Service would have stopped me hating the blue scum though?

Hundreds but after the aggro over the Soul Cellar thread i am reluctant to post them.

One thing i always noticed about the OB in London was they would let fans fight arrest the winner and cart the loser of to hospital 40 years ago

The old bill kept a group of saints fans in the pub for about half an hour and then escorted them straight into SMS. My father-in-law was amongst them. Apparently there had been a fight earlier and they were worried that something was going to kick off.

I realise that this is not ideal and if I'd been involved I probably would have felt pretty p****d off. However they all got the the game without any punches being thrown so surely this counts as a good thing?

I don't like the treatment of genuine fans but untill the mindless minority of fans stop runing this for the rest we will have to accept that this is the treatment that will go on.

I'm sure many of you will disagree but that's the joy of a forum isn't it?

They didn't even clear the pub, they took everyone who was outside and left about 20 of us in the pub to finish our beers and make our own way to the ground.

How nice of them...

There was probably about 100 in the escort at the start, by the time the escort reached the stadium, there was apparantly only about 20 left, and they were the ones who were too old / too fat, to run.

Policing at it's best it seems, they are obviously missing their PC P.

Dont worry he's still about him and his buddies pulled us over Saturday, we got searched, c12ed and all had to state d.o.b's addresses and full names into one of their video cameras on the way to Bedord Place.
