Saint Martini Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 For the ones that were there*, did Saeijs play well and how important was he to the clean sheet? *I know its a bit early but I just wanted to write that topic title.

Viking Warrior Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 My bet is Yorkie will be the first fan to get home and give us a report. After all the Barnsley game would be a home game for him
Sheff Saint Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 Ha ha, i'm first then!! I'll post thoughts later but i think we had the get out of jail free card today. Barnsley should have been about 3-0 up by the time we ventured into their half and scored, but a win is a win and hopefully the confidence of a win will kick us onto a winning run. Main reasons we won, Davies (again) and Saeijs. I thought Saeijs was very solid and looked like the kind of player we need. A big tough centre half. I mean, i can't see Prem clubs knocking the door down for him, but for us i think he could a really good job. First impressions positive for me. Saints67 Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 I was very impressed with Saeijs today. Odd seeing a tall lanky bloke with the No.5 shirt on again but he played some neat football, looked confident on the ball and cleared up virtually all the balls that were delivered his way. He only made one error that I could see when he let the ball run past him and Cureton nipped past and had a shot blocked by Davis (MOTM). Saejis made a couple of clumsy looking challenges but they must've been ok as the ref blew up for virtually every bit of contact yet let these go. A real win ugly today. Ash Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 Thought he had a cracking game today, looked really composed for someone who had only been here for a day or two. He did have one slip up but that aside, looks very promising. His distribution was sooooo much better that everbody else in the back four who consistently invited pressure back onto ourselves by hopelessly hoofing into non existent channels. Like someone else said, doubt there will be premiership clubs sniffing around him but on today's performance he looks very capable at this level. for_heaven's_Saint Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 Looked a really strong, solid and experienced centreback and exactly what we have been missing in my opinion. One particular moment that stood out for me was towards the end of the first half when one of their strikers/midfielders turned him, yet he still managed to get a foot in and cut out what would have probably been a one on one with KD. I don't think Lancashire would have done this or one half the tackles and headers that he did today. He also showed a good degree of common sense in that he seemed to know when to header the ball down or pass to one of our players and when to get rid of it and clear the danger. Another thing we have arguably been lacking (think 1st goal against plymouth on boxing day, when Lancashire should have hoofed the ball out but instead gave it back to them to score.) All in all I'd say 'Size' definitely mattered, and could well be vital to our survival.
Saint Bones Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 Listening to the aftermatch report with him ( available on other thread) it was nice to hear he made a whole heap of headed clearances.. Always handy to have esepcially when facing a long ball team. ( unsure of Barnsleys tactics - Sounds like they had our number - but we got the points )
Iowsaintsfan Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 I thought he had a good game too, as already mentioned he made one mistake which could have been costly, but a positive debut. Also good to see him salute the fans as he left the pitch. Nothing to do with Saeijs but good to see Morgan trying to lift the crowd just before the goal as he came across to take the corner

Chez Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 decent in the air, isn't that what we'e hankered for all season? He looked a little shakey to me, but he won a fair amount in the air and hopefully will teach Lancashire a few things.
saint1977 Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 Yep, exactly the type of player we needed and still need more of to stay up. Great win yesterday, lucky or not and I'll settle for another scrappy 1-0 next week and at Carrow as well. Needs must.
yorkie Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 Sorry I didn't report earlier but been chasing my tail! Personally with the team defending the Saints end in the 1st half, it was a good time to assess him. I thought he looked pretty solid. Good in the air and strong on the ground. He doesn't get bullied or pushed around and I got the impression he was dishing it out a bit too. There were times in the first half he just looked so composed. He always seemed to have the measure of Macken, and when he did stand a bit too far off he got away with, with a well timed tackle. I thought he was just what the doctor ordered - and whilst Jan knew nothing of him coming and Cork going, someone at the the club must be lsitening to all the forums. The fact is introduce a few experienced heads and whilst every one keeps saying we won ugly - there were times when the passing and movement made Barnsley look very ordinary. We suffer very badly in the final third - almost as if no one wants to take responsibility for having a go. Peery and Size (you know who I mean) at the heart of our defence will be a solid foundation to build on. We still look a bit vulnerable at left and right back, and midfield looks a bit lightweight. Holmes and Schneiderlin look good but get knocked off the ball too easily and don't put a foot in enough. Saying that given the ball and better distribution (especially Holmes) we could start believing we have a team of crowd pleasers. I worry about our presence in the final third - we are struggling with someone who is hungry to score a goal. It's almost like we want to score a goal like Arsenal. The perfect goal - passing the ball into the back of the net - like Lalanna's at QPR.

ulstersaint Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 Time to bring back Fitz Hall. Saeijs - Fitz Hall. OK I'll get me coat I'm surprised it took a dozen posts for someone to remind us a past defender - One Size Fitz Hall. The new guy's name will provide pun fodder for the sub-editors on the OS and Echo, but more importantly, it sounds like he made a good start at Barnsley. A tall, mobile, physically strong and experienced centre-back. Just what was needed - about 3 years ago when Killer got crocked!
