Give it to Ron Posted 12 January, 2009 Share Posted 12 January, 2009 Can anyone else remember Quiz Ball and Saints being on there. Thrashed Leeds ;-) a great childhood memory. I just gave myself a shudder when I saw that name McLaren again who was probably the worst keeper we have ever signed. http://www.btinternet.com/~m.d.pratesi/mp/quizball1966.html RIP David. La BoIS Saint Posted 12 January, 2009 Share Posted 12 January, 2009 The man was a legend, quite simply. When I saw the news I started wondering who would be today's equivalent. Jeff Stelling? Ray Stubbs?
Winnersaint Posted 12 January, 2009 Share Posted 12 January, 2009 One of the voices of British sport over the last 40 years RIP. Loved Quizball as a kid. Never sure if the great J Arlott was a saints or token Hampshireman though.
Leslie Charteris Posted 12 January, 2009 Share Posted 12 January, 2009 One of the voices of British sport over the last 40 years RIP. Loved Quizball as a kid. Never sure if the great J Arlott was a saints or token Hampshireman though. John Arlott was never a token Hampshireman - born and raised in Basingstoke, he had a proper 'ampshire accent. David Vine will be sorely missed, I can hardly believe he retired in 2000. He was on the telly for as long as I can remember.
VectisSaint Posted 12 January, 2009 Share Posted 12 January, 2009 Quiz Ball, bloody hell had forgotten that. Never did like Gordon Jackson There really are some saddos out there, who would post all the results of Quiz Ball on the web? FFS get a life (but thanks anyway, found it quite interesting, I'll get my duffle coat now).
alpine_saint Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Started a thread on this on Off-Topic. Was my favourite BBC sports presenter; I credit Ski Sunday and Winter Olympic coverage under his warm dulcet tones for getting me into skiing and winter sports. Never sure if the great J Arlott was a saints or token Hampshireman though. Arlott born and bred in Hampshire was originally a Policeman in Basingstoke I think Used to live in Alresford before moving to the Channel Isles
Give it to Ron Posted 13 January, 2009 Author Share Posted 13 January, 2009 I used to remember Arlott for his brilliant cricket commentries from the old county ground in Northlands Rd.
corsacar saint Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Arlott was a genius, David Vine was just David Vine.
Winnersaint Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Perhaps I didn't make myself clear in my earlier post. I am fully aware of Arlott's biographical details. Just that as probably the best known Hampshireman at the time was he on Quizball as a Saints supporter or for his Hampshire rather than Saints connections. Have to be so careful on here sometimes. Kenilworthy Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 John Arlott actually supported Reading. I guess they struggled to find a celebrity who was a real Saints supporter in that era.
