Didn’t seem to fit on an existing thread but it popped up in my YouTube feed and some of the matches I knew of but hadn’t actually seen before.

It runs from Leeds away 1966 to late 1980s although most of the coverage is 1985 or before. I started watching 1983/4, quite a bit there but it was the late 1970s footage I’d not seen in any many cases. Especially a 3-3 comeback draw at Burnley with a last minute equaliser by David Peach prompting a superb line from Barry Davies as the players swamp David Peach ‘and they all want a bite of Peach 🍑’. More innocent days…

Interesting that only two of the 1976 Cup winning team were around for the 77/78 promotion winning side (Peach and Holmes). 

Nicholl and Allardyce exchanging goals at Roker Park. Sunderland hammered at the Dell in 1975.

Who was there for some of these games then and and what are your memories?

No worries. Certain there’s footage I’ve never seen before and the quality is very decent. Other details I noticed are the barking dogs at the Chelsea game. My parents lived near the Dell prior to buying a house in Woolston and remember saying there was loads of trouble before, at and after that game.

Also McCalliog’s free kick v Bradford in front of their original main stand and a response to our celebrating away fans audible of ‘you’re going to get your fucking heads kicked in’. Their Ointment Crew was one of the most notorious in the lower leagues.

That's a great find well done! Brought back great memories of my first full season watching in 1977 with a season ticket west stand about Row Q seat 59 I think ha ha

If you watch the big match revisited on ITV (currently on another chronological rerun) you begin to notice a growing interest in Saints and McMenemy after the cup win, and the club starts to be featured much more in 77/78 and 78/79 into the heyday. The producers clearly saw Saints as odds on to provide entertainment and they were dead right. Few years ago Steve Williams (my favourite player back in the day) was interviewed and said that his memory of those sides was the team spirit, workrate and pure enjoyment of playing professional football - they would be relentless until the final whistle. Thus, not scared of anyone and happy to go toe to toe with any side. You watch these matches (nice clear footage on TBMR) and this really stands out, top pros in a final hurrah alongside young talent keen to learn from the maestros, giving it everything they’ve got for the shirt -nostalgia can be incredibly refreshing.

Yes Bradford City away in the 6th Round wasnt a pleasant experience.
We saw plenty of aggro before the game and wonder now if the hand painted white Ford Escort(?) van with Saints slogans painted in red managed to get out of the city safely.
Fortunately we had a seat in the main stand (the one that was lost in the subsequent fire) and sat a few rows back from the British Heavyweight champion at the time (?? Dunn) who regularly suggested to City defenders to... 'break fucking Channon's legs'....

Richard ‘Dick’ Dunn, the fighting Para. Ended up challenging Ali for the world title.

what a fantastic hour of memories, thank you Gloucester Saint , I remember them all.

This is a history lesson for the younger generation who only listened to their fathers (and maybe grandfathers)

boasting about these legendary names who wore a Saints shirt at one time or another in that period.

A little sadness came afterwards, when I realised just how many of them have already passed on .

Most recently; Chivers, Nicholl ...and Watson (?)

Glorious stuff, how good was Terry Paine? Amazing how many players you can remember and recognise still, Jimmy Gabriel headed one in and I said Gabriel before the commentator!

I shall watch that when I have a bit more time, but thanks! Like a big kid I was shouting out the names as I saw them in the introduction: Paine, Sydenham, Osgood, Wallace, Golac!

This inspired me to go find the highlights of the first ever match I attended. Still pissed off about the offside decision for Keegan's goal.

Great post, thank you. I went to many of the matches highlighted but don't remember them being in black & white for where I was standing.

It was good to see the magic of Terry Paine again. it's easy to forget over time how good he was on the ball.

Sad indeed but Terry Paine as Club Preident was a regular at home matches until very recently. I assume he is still going strong in South Africa? Must be late eighties by now.

Would love to see him back at SMS again before it's too late. No doubt a true legend, Saints through and through and arguably the best and most loved player ever to wear our stripes

I think he is the most loved for people from his generation, Davies and Channon for me.

Hopefully @coalman brought some lumps with him from his lorry to retaliate 😀

Burnley fans must have had some lumps left over from their Christmas stockings.
