MLT - Is it up there?

I saw match of the day last night and I thought the goal of the season choices was not that great compared to what we have seen in the past.

Now if you was totally honest, What has been your best goal seen in the Premiership and where would you put Le Gods flicks against Newcastle and the long range effort against Blackburn.

Myself personally would put his Flicks against Newcastle 2nd only behind Trevor Sinclairs overhead kick for Qpr from outside the area, It went right in the top corner after a deep cross.

What do you reckon? The over rated bechkam fluff.... ;-)

Defo goals against newcastle would have to feature in a premier top ten of all time. He really was a WORLD class player then. How this country wasted him immeasurable talent is one of the crimes of the modern game. He should have been an the World Cup when Hoddle was in charge FACT! A sad waste of a great players talent.

I always liked the MLT efforts you named, but also enjoyed Theo Walcotts Luton lob - just for the sheer cheek of it - he made it look so easy.

Who won the GotS over there?

Down here it was David Bentley for Spuds V Arsnil which was a corker.

BWP made 6th in the FL category, but it was on in the background and didn't see which game it was

Hasn't been decided yet. Bentley was one of the ten and I guess he'll win.

A great goal scorer and a scorer of great goals. A combination rarely found in any player.

That said, almost anyone can come up with a Goal of the Season contender once in a while.

Other efforts off the top of my head (excluding MLT):

Trevor Sinclair' overhead kick (as you said)

Scholes/Di Canio volleys from corner/cross (and I think someone from Charlton did one too)

Zola's flick from the corner

Ginola did one like MLT off the thigh then volley (but was European game I think)

Henry flick and volley

There was a Villa one in the 90's where almost everyone touched he ball before Dalian Atkinson finished it off

Giggs in the FA Cup semi versus Arsenal

Still, no more than one each and you could name 6-8 of Matty's and give this lot a run for their money.

I saw something on ESPN last week where that Beckham goal won goal of the decade or something. Yeh, it was a good goal but it happens 6-7 times a season and it has been bettered. Leaving aside Matty who has his own collection, and in addition to all of those mentioned above, I can think of a screamer by gerrard against Boro at the Kop End, a Shearer volley against Everton, various Bergkamp efforts and my favourite non Matty one, that Cantona chip against Sunderland. His arrogant celebration tops it off.

A lot of the goals now are just about power sadly. Or a hopeful punt from long distance. Ronaldo has scored some great goals, but generally they're hit it as hard as you can from range efforts, same as gerrard. You tended to see random players doing that every now and again in the past.

But the truly great goals just much more skill and more importantly flair. Le Tissier's looked better as he looked in full control of them, more effortless and cheeky, just pure flair. Other players also seemed more capable. There wasn't one goal in this season's competition that made me think wow. Le Tissier has scored 10 better goals by himself.

I totally agree with you.

MLT scored allsorts, Flick up freekick volleys, left foot screamer vs forest after missing the penalty, power goals like versus the toons when he hammered it past hislop, Famcy footwork goals, 38 yards dippers against flowers, weave in and outs versus Liverpool a of anfield, sublime chips vs the manks in the 6-3.

What a legend he was.

Finally that Yeboah volley I would put in the top 10 Ponty no doubt with the shearer one.

MLT is our Shearer without management skills. Whoever takesover needs MLT firmly onside for any sort of unity to flourish. Respect is vested in very few at Southampton FC.

Did you read any other post on this thread before posting that?

Please don't turn it into a takeover or lowe out thread. ;-)

If anyone has a chance could they do a top 10 supa goals on YouTube links so us fans can do a poll vote?

I wish I could but the iPhone won't let me paste links.

you are right about this season's efforts, quite a ropey collection I thought.

I always think that the most important part of a contender is the actual finish so I have never been a fan of those 28 passes and a tap-in sort of goals (Archie Gemmel for Forest...)

Haven't they missed some good ones off the list? Wigan overhead volley?

As for all time, Matt's best are right up there with several of Henry's - running from the halfway line and holding off about four defenders, and Di Canio's volley that for anyone who has kicked a ball was the perfect execution of a difficult skill, and it was before he went all extremist.

Let's face it, most of us have leapt up and volleyed a similar cross with the outside of the foot, and many of them went out for a throw...
