Apparently, the Government is looking to introduce mandatory life sentences for anyone who is convicted of a sexual or violent offence for a second time. Good deterrent? Seems a tad unfair that someone can get a little too drunk once in a while and get in a scrap - and spend their life in prison for it. Sounds ridiculous to me. This latest idea doesn't sound like it's been thought through very well. Something we should be used to by now with the dithering coalition. Using your squiffy pugilist as an example, he would get a life sentence for getting convicted for two 'scraps' (e.g. whatever form of violent assault you're euphemising ).
