alpine won't post anything negative about this game. He's said time after time that the performance doesn't matter. All that matters is the result, so seeing as we got a draw to a side with a brilliant home record that will be regarded as a good point.

right midfield is without question his best position and this has been proved time after time. He does not have the pace to go round the outside of fullbacks so he cuts inside (to good effect) and that means he is more effective on the right side moving on to his best foot.

I think every Saints fan thought the same, but hoped it wouldn't be. Very, very bad miss. I defend him on here a lot, but that's three absolutely terrific chances he has missed in recent weeks. That said he had a pretty good game at left midfield, especially in the first half. Thought he disappeared in the second along with all our midfield as the ball just sailed over them time after time.

I didn't think we capitulated in the second half, we just succumbed to a long ball onslaught against two of the best headers of a ball we have seen in a Saints shirt, maybe even the premiership. I think the biggest error was not changing our game plan. In the first half it was to hoof it and get the ball down the channels, turn them round and pick up the pieces. We continued to do this in the second half conceding possession far too cheaply. We should have looked to keep the ball. Cork and Morgan (and pretty much everyone) gave the ball away too cheaply when we had the chance to break or pass them to death. I never want to hear skate Pulis or any Stoke fan moan about people describing them as a hoof ball side. They are exactly that and very good at it too.

funnily enough it was the previously mentioned Jon Gittens that was Nicholl's last signing. I remember his first game back at the Dell marking Ian Rush completely out of the game. Not many did that around that time.

Good memory. I forgot all about Mark Whitlock. Not entirely sure you can count Gittens as he didn't come through the ranks, nor was he a nipper when he joined. He was about 21 or 22 when we bought him from a non-league club side.
