Give me a real objection and I'll move it to TMS.

Of course there is a problem. Saints are broke, end of story. We can't afford to do anything else than we are doing now. Stop thrashing about, because it won't make the slightest difference. Like I said before... ooh, around a couple of seasons ago when Lowe was last in charge - you could do a mass boycott of matches. About two or three should do it, but more if need be - accompanied by a statement which suggests that the fans will return, en masse, once Lowe and his cronies have gone and sold their shares. This would probably be followed by administration, but at least Lowe would be gone, and the club would be in a position to be bought. Perhaps you need to save that action for the end of the season. Until then I still don't know why you lot thrash about so. You're not actually doing anything for change.

Saints Greatest XI - Nominations For Best RM.
St Landrew replied to St Landrew's topic in Golden Posts
As I said, there may be some blood spilt in the coming weeks. EDIT: I remember some years back on one of the Saints videos, the two presenters tried to find a Best XI. Matty got in that one, but only in the last position of a 4-2-4 formation, and there was little logic to the decision. They left out Ball, Dennis, Keegan, Moran, Armstrong and loads of others superb players. -
I agree with the first sentence. The rest can go hang. I'm thinking of having a goose or a duck for Xmas dinner. Can't find any actual people who'll eat with me.
-
Oh, I don't know..? It's a little more highbrow than an edition of MB lingerie pics. Do I have to read an entire e-book before I make a decision..?
-
Yes you can use a switching unit. Just make sure that all the pieces of kit are of the Line-In variety and require no additional pre-amping, e.g. a turntable is NOT a line-in unit, but a Tuner[DAB or Analogue]/Tape Deck/CD-DVD Player/Mp3/4 is. Oh, and sort them so that if you want to record from one to another, you don't have them on the same input. An obvious point, but one to get right first time, I think. OK..? Pre and Power amps ARE worth getting. They have to be of sufficient quality to be worth it though, IMO.

Saints Greatest XI - Nominations For Best RM.

I think we should go through a little voting process, in fact we'll need to. I'll want to know who comes second to Le God, but I agree, wasting an entire week on an obvious conclusion is a little silly. -
Next week sometime I'm off to see the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. I'm not getting my hopes up. What with a lump of wood playing the lead role, it doesn't bode well. But I feel I should bear witness to either an expected balls up, or an unexpected great update of a classic film. It has happened before, both good and bad. The remake of The Time Machine in 2003 left me coming out of the cinema pretty p!ssed off. It took ages for me to appreciate the film for what it was - another departure from the book, and once I did that, I enjoyed it; wafer thin and flawed though it was. The second experience was The Flight Of the Phoenix, just the other week on TV. My opinion on that one isn't going to change, of that I'm sure. Awful and totally unnecessary film, which neither brings anything else to the screen that the original didn't, and certainly didn't improve on it. In fact, if the original was the apex of film making, and then this one surely was the nadir. Perhaps the 3rd time will prove lucky. But with Keanu Reeves playing the central character..? I'm not betting on it.

It is NOT Poortvliet's fault - It's Lowe's
St Landrew replied to Seaford Saint's topic in The Saints
You don't have to be a multi-trick pony to win at this game. You just have to get the team playing well, and eliminate the mistakes. It isn't rocket science, but it takes discipline and skill, and sheer bloody hard work when things aren't going for you, and the opposition has a head start because, 1] you're being shafted by your chairman; 2] many of the fans don't want to support your efforts as you are associated with that chairman; 3] some don't see that you could do your job if you were presented with an even playing field, instead of the uphill task you face; 4] the opposition players are established and often much more experienced players than you have at your disposal. 5] Your young players are being adversely affected by this high-profile experiment run by the club, and are losing confidence and possibly endangering the quality of their long term careers; 6] although you have a history of success with young players, far less qualified people are making their minds up about you, and they want you gone. Which means you probably won't get the proper time and backing which you should have since this experiment is really mickey-mouse in its structure and financing, as are all things to do with a SFC Board setup. Which is a bloody shame, because the best part of this mickey-mouse experiment is watching the young players play excellent pass and move football, which they are encouraged to do by Jan Poortvliet and the Coaching Staff. The football is often a joy because the team seemingly play without fear, despite the fact that their confidence must be eggshell like in nature. I believe JP is doing as well as anybody could, and probably a lot better than most, given the players he has available. The fact that he has to do this with a proverbial elephant on his back is no help at all. Having said that, if Lowe wants to persist in this experiment, it's about time he backed JP properly, and there should be no danger of sales come January, and probably some quality acquisitions as well. But that won't happen. -
Saints Greatest XI - Nominations For Best RM.

Ahem... would those people who have nominated MLT for this position like to change their minds.. that is, if they have a mind to change, because clearly they haven't been using their noodles, as Matty is in severe danger of NOT making the A Team by coming a true second to Terry Paine at RM. Hopefully, MLT won't be voted for if he makes the voting list. Think about it, if you can. -
Saints Greatest XI - Nominations For Best RM.
St Landrew replied to St Landrew's topic in Golden Posts
I appreciate that peeps. Thanks to WS, we now have a stalking horse [that's what they call them, isn't it..?] Please don't start nominating genuine players just yet for the B team. I may decide we [i'm 90% certain we will] need a separate nomination for the second best player, in order that we don't end up with a major faux pas. There will be enough blood spilt in later polls. Cheers EDIT: Btw, people wishing to look back at previous threads on Saints Greatest XI now only have to pop across to Golden Posts. They are sleeping there for now while I compile an article, or series, on Saints greatest teams, for the main site. -
Saints Greatest XI - Nominations For Best RM.
St Landrew replied to St Landrew's topic in Golden Posts
OK, peeps. It's nearly 1 o'clock on saturday afternoon, and practically all we have at RM is Terry Paine. We'll need a player for the B team. I'm not going to ask you to name a second player at present, but we might come to that if it ends up so one-sided, and we need a nomination for the B team. -

Sorry. We have this format and formation of 4-4-2, as almost every nominated player will have played in such a formation, and although some might see it as unfair, it just means that we end up sorting the positions out. If you've been reading the earlier threads, you'll know that we'll be nominating 2 players for Central Midfield, that is RCM and LCM, and vote for 2 players in those positions. Then we'll nominate for LM and vote for that player. The 2 strikers up front will have individual nominations and votes. Afterwards, we'll have a subs bench and possibly a manager too. Anyway, back to today's RM vote - Terry Paine. -
Yeah, we've had a thread about that. Thanks.

Well ST-V was a bit of a bummer this evening. Unforgettable, the episode, was just the opposite. Perhaps the writers had a wry sense of humour, at the time. Hopefully, Monday night's episode, Living Witness, will see a return to form.

I agree with a lot of what you've said above, Robsk. There's not many times I disagree with what you say, and I often look for your opinion on subjects, knowing that it will be well considered. You have put several justifications for those, in power, that are able to do something, about leaders like Mugabe, to look at themselves and suggest that they are not without error themselves. But then what are we to do..? Nobody is perfect, but we can stop suffering. And indeed, there are several countries around the world that need some sort of adjustment. Name me a country that couldn't do with improving in some sense. Perhaps we'll even get around to our own major errors one day. I'm a UK citizen. I consider myself a European, and a citizen of the World. Hopefully, one day, there will be people who can say they are the same as me, or my heirs. Have the same rights and responsibilities, similar opportunities, and similar life chances. The diversity will be in their culture and life experience, because they choose differently, and not because it is imposed on them.

Now here's where the flak is going to start flying. The right side of midfield in a 4-4-2 formation. Call it Right Wing if you want, it amounts to same thing for many players that have played down that side of the pitch. Remember, we're not looking for legends, just the very best players. Remember also, there's only one nomination that will be taken notice of, even if you mention 2 or 3 players. So you'd better be clear who you thought was the very best. Also remember that some players could play all over the park, and some were more effective in their prime position. Remember finally, that once a player has made it into the A team, or the B team, they are no longer eligible for nomination or voting. So think carefully before you go with a gut feeling. I think this is one of the first of several positions where there is more than one player vying for the title of best footballer ever to have appeared in a Saints shirt. This nominations thread runs until Sunday night. You have been warned. This is going to be tough, and there will undoubtedly be arguments. Settle them here.

Thanks for voting peeps. The Poll is now closed. For those who haven't been following these polls, to establish the fans idea of the greatest quality players to have appeared for SFC, I'll answer your question. Please do me the favour of reading these answers if you haven't at previous times. The reason why certain players make the last 5, 6 or 10 list is because they receive the most nominations prior to voting. So if David Webb [a worthy scorer in the 1970 Cup Final replay - by then, sadly for Chelsea, NOT for Saints] isn't in the list, it's because he didn't receive enough nominations. Influence your friends next time this subject comes around, and perhaps players like David Webb will receive their true tribute. At this time, Ivan Golac has been considered the best RB in Saints memory, with Jason Dodd making the back-up team. Personally, I thought Mick Mills hugely superior to Doddsy, back this is a democracy, and I'm not asking why.. Here's the line up so far: A Team: ----------------Shilton----------------- Golac---Wright---Svensson---Bridge B Team: ---------------Niemi------------------- Dodd--Lundekvam--Watson--Dennis Both these teams have the fundamentals of a really potent Premiership. The A team being a possible Premier League winner. We'll see if we can maintain the quality..! From this point on we'll see the positions nominated revert to team numbers. So right to left position numbers from now on, OK..? What this means is that the right sided midfield position gets decided next. Go to the nominations thread to nominate your best quality Saints RM. There are plenty of them.

Robsk. I know you're not defending Mugabe. But when innocent people die, either due to evil or stupidity, are you going to stand by, knowing you could improve that situation..? There's a time when you stop turning away.

One truth of the aftermath of WWII is that Great Britain, as a country, was completely and utterly dead on its feet. Financially, Britain was practically bankrupt. While money and resources were ploughed into Germany, after the war, GB was meant to stand up for itself, even though it had kept up the resistance, practically alone until 1942, and had been unprepared for that fight, at the time, while Germany had been massing its strength. In the years after the war, the Lend-Lease Agreement payments, which had been set up between the USA and its allies, kicked in after 1950. Fifty or so years of payments ensued, and the UK paid every last cent and interest that the US demanded back. It wasn't until just after the millennium that the debt was paid off. In effect, GB has suffered the effects of WWII long after it has been just a memory for other countries. All countries can certainly lose a war, but some can win a peace.
-
Yeah we did. Like everyone else I don't know the full extent or the full realisation of it. But in order to defeat the evil of Germany, this country and its allies had to temporarily match that evil. Being born in 1958, I'm lucky enough not to have experienced anything of WWII, although even when I was a child, there were plenty of overtones. But 4 of my immediate family are still around to tell of what it was like to be bombed. My older relatives tell me how loud the bombs were, and how the ground would shake. How one of them was once riding a bicycle in the pitch black of a winter's evening, and rode right into a huge bomb crater on Winchester Road. The trails in the sky as fighter aircraft would be caught up in dogfights, and my eldest brother would be entranced by them. Two of my relatives were born in 1940 and 1942. The older relative [another brother] has explained how when the air raids stopped, he asked Mum, why it was so quiet. And Mum said, it's because the War is over. And my brother was so confused because he had never known anything else. And peacetime bored him for a while. This is the innocent human element of War, and it was much the same for innocents on the other side. There are no winners, only losers. It's just that some lose less heavily than others. Unfortunately, we can't just stand aside and allow evil to succeed.
-
I don't like the idea of policing the world either. But there are evil people who hide behind the idea of non-intervention. Saddam Hussein cruelly treated and often killed his people, and those that turned against him because they finally saw his evil deeds. It doesn't excuse whether the West backed Saddam in past years - it was necessary for him to go. Whether or not the reason for intervention in Iraq was flawed, it can only be political point scoring that suggests we should rewind history and have him [that really would be rewinding time] back in power. In a sense, the same is true for Mugabe. He may have been the darling many, many years ago, but power went to his head because he knew he could hide behind an excuse, and the necessary constitutional checks were overcome. When good people knowingly stand aside, evil people succeed. And if the only good that comes from these sorry episodes, that innocent people eventually stop dying, then surely that is enough.

What happens if you get a call passed to you from say...Padstow..? Do you virtually convalesce elsewhere, say in Inverness, too just at the right moment..?

Only ONCE..???

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7779168.stm Had to be done Steve. Not only is it cost cutting, but it puts the emphasis of winning a race on great driving and overtaking. For too long, F1 races have been won and lost in the strategic pit-stop, rather than out on the track. Some people won't realise what it was like before strategic pit-stops became the real race winner. As I've said before, something that should be classed as quite interesting has become the fantastic in F1. That's not right. Here's to overtaking and real competition.
