  1. 3 comments: 1. The only obvious omission from the A team, for me, is Steve Williams, whom I think was the best midfielder for Saints in the last 40 years (and played for the best part of 10 years). 2. Kelvin Davis appearing as one of our best 4 keepers ever is a complete farce - virtually every regular keeper we've had over the last 40 years - and some irregular ones - have been better. 3. Thanks for organising it. It's been a lot of fun and brought back some memories of great players.
  2. Sacking Sturrock.
  3. The Drugs Don't Work
  4. I think you'll find that those games don't include many against the current top 6 or 8.
  5. I wish I could still get upset about it all, but I can't. Lowe has destroyed my soul.
  6. Rupert was known to be unhappy about the cuts in prices (e.g. March madness deals) when Wilde was in charge. Even given the economic situation, I would be surprised if he doesn't think seriously about raising prices, certainly if we somehow stay up.
  7. So if we sign him, we could put out a team before the end of the season that includes players who, before joining this season, played for... - Millwall reserves - Dorchester Town - Some non-league outfit twice (the Hungarian guy...is it Zoltan?) And some of you were glad Rupert came back!!
  8. Like Peckhardt? Or Hammill?
  9. Tim, you'll get shot down for this, but I can't think of anything else that would galvanise the club and supporters more at the moment. I happen to think he'd be a much better manager than many others believe - almost certainly better than several of our other manager/coaches of recent years. If his first act was a 'call to arms' to get all those who used to watch him but are now staying away to return, he'd probably put an extra 10,000 on the gate. That alone would create the sort of positive atmosphere that has been lacking for much of the last 5 years. If it doesn't work out? Well, we won't be worse off than we are now, will we? If we go down, I can't see why his image at Saints would be tarnished. Brooking is still a legend at Upton Park, even though he was acting manager when they were relegated (admittedly only for about 6 games though). Only problem is, like any other potentially decent candidate, he probably wouldn't be able to work under Lowe.
  10. Sturrock did, until that **** Lowe got rid of him.
  11. I think you'll find that he's much too sensible to swap Mandaric and Leicester (on the way up) for Gaydamak and Pompey (which could all fall apart at any time, particularly if they are relegated).
  12. Absolute nonsense! Look at his record FFS.
  13. "And once again, [insert name of left winger] is beaten by Lloyd James' pace!" Any others?
  14. Anyone who read Tony Adams' columns for the London Standard during Euro 2004, which were meant to comment on the tactical side of the tournament, would have realised that he would be totally inept at management. For the quarter-final, he was saying that England should leave out Rooney and play Owen as a lone striker, amongst lots of other garbage!! Quite surprising really, as he played under such tactically astute managers as Graham and Wenger. Mind you, he did play under Graham Taylor and Hoddle too...
  15. Yes, and at the current rate of progress we'll get about 14 of those!
  16. Nonsense.
  17. In recent weeks... Dropped the ball to give Burnley their second goal. v. Forest: Awful punch from a corner in first half led to a shot being cleared off the line. Second half, completely missed a cross that could have led to another goal, then got chipped from 40 yards. v. Swansea: gave away a goal v. Sheff Utd Flapped at a corner rather than clearing it which ultimately led to their first goal; Some think he should have saved the second goal too (not sure on this myself). In short though, in amongst some good saves, consistent errors which have led to goals (or could have done). Just as I laughed at people calling Gillett the new Paul Scholes earlier in the season, I've also found it amazing the number of people who reckon he's a top keeper. FFS, Jan even said he should be considered for England. In short, he is a poor to average keeper at this level who is capable of making some great saves, but is lacking in virtually all other areas of the keeper's role. Premiership and decent CCC clubs snap up any decent keeper going. He's only in his early 30's: if he was really any good, he'd have been snapped up a while ago by a decent side, given our current financial position.
  18. Indeed - out of the league by summer 2012.
  19. He's already ruined the season by his incompetent management and dreadful football decisions, so why celebrate?
  20. Don't think you've given us the unofficial reason have you?
  21. 5b.Rideout 5c.QPR away 5d. 2-0 to lose the title to Arsenal
  22. Q5 I remember Arsene mentioning Matty's great technique after that goal. Was it someone like Van Basten's shooting that he compared Matty's with?
  23. Bridge held the record for continuous Premiership games on the pitch without missing a minute by an outfield player. Began at home to Boro under Hoddle (1-1) and finished at home to Liverpool when we lost 1-0 under Strachen. I think Frank Lampard subsequently beat this record. In the old days, it was quite common for several players to play every game of a season. Villa famously won the league in 1981 using only 14 players all season. I'd imagine there must be several Saints players who've played more continuous games than Bridgey? Is that right Duncan?
  24. Craig Johnson is an inventor. Newcastle in 2000. It was during the fuel strike, so I guess there was a chant about that. I remember it being played on a really warm sunny day while there was crap weather in the north. There were certainly chants of "Here for the weather! You're only here for the weather!" Keith Cassells joined with Mark Wright. Ronnie E officially left due to an ongoing injury (back was it?)
