I couldn't be arsed to register to enlighten them about the composition of our team, and that I was watching 4 (?) players I'd never seen before.. But I came on here to comment about the Getafe game, as nobody else has! Will many be be going? I presume some of the first teamers will now make an appearance? Does anybody have any insight into Getafe without me having to make any effort? 🙂

Article in The Guardian about which player each club should sign; here's Saints'.. Southampton: Aaron Ramsdale While Southampton have a couple of problem areas to address before the transfer window closes, the most pressing concern is between the sticks. With Gavin Bazunu sidelined until next year owing to an achilles issue, Saints go into the season with Alex McCarthy as first choice, but he struggles with the ball at his feet. With that in mind, Russell Martin may look for a new shot-stopper. They could do a lot worse than Aaron Ramsdale, who rarely let Arsenal down and was talented enough to earn five England caps. Having lost his spot to David Raya at Arsenal, Ramsdale may be on the move. He deserves regular game time and would be an astute signing.

Unfortunately Lazio fans were the other side of the pitch as I had a bit of fun shouting things at them. Foreign language fluency always improves after a couple of pints! Dirty bastards.. As to us, Mara was trying more than in the last few games, it seemed. As Patches above said Mccarthy received some balls he really shouldn't but occasionally it's valid to put it long, although when we do there is nobody to compete and hold it up and illustrates why we want to pass it out. Manning worries me , Edwards looks promising with a bit of useful pace too. I thought Bree had a good game, surprisingly. Charles looks to have improved and playing with a bit more confidence. Dibling and SAA look like they could embarrass a few defenders and it will be fun seeing their development. It has already been noted that Alcaraz was up for it!

I'm in a 'spoons which is also quiet and no security staff, unlike Saturday match days.. But it's a spoons so still been bothered by a loud socially crippled drunk (an Everton supporter, you'll be pleased to know). Think I've just seen a Lazio couple wander in, but suspect their Curva won't be filled tonight..

I've just seen the Millwall highlights on the OS: he does have a certain abiility, doesn't he?! Plus a bit of deceptive pace too. Like you I remember those strikes against Newcastle U21, and what struck me then was the absence of significant backlift in his powerful shots. Here's hoping...

I don't casually watch Premier League football as not having a tv I have to make an effort to watch the games, normally Saints of course, that I want to watch. But tonight in a random French chain hotel I watched one of last season's games between Arsenal and Chelsea. Some great players and ability on show but what also struck me was the number of errors and poor or over ambitious passing, plus long balls from keepers that came straight back. We'll struggle, no doubt, but maybe there is some hope after all?

That's the sort of dogmatic post to mentally bookmark to bring up at a suitable time. Not so much to prove you wrong, or the humour but we all want bloomin' Everton to be relegated!

Thread drift is common, but you've identified the reason!

Is the Premier League too rich for us?

What's the quid pro quo I wonder? -
When does the transfer window and loan window close? How many games will have been played by then, and is it possible some signings/loanees are waiting to see how we perform?
-
I rarely hear from my nephew, who is a Posh supporter, but as an aside to another matter he wished us good luck with Ronnie Edwards: "A lot of potential".. Let's hope so.
-
I seem to recall that that skill seemed to be embarassingly absent when he played for us, but that might just be my old memory cells playing tricks.. ?
-
He's just convincing Frasier that a move to Southampton is the correct decision. But as pointed out he'll probably wait until after the 17th before he lets him go.

As long as Toro are buying him as a support striker for the work and disruptionhe does he'll do fine, but they'll be disappointed if they think they are buying a finisher. It'll only be the fans who expect more goals, I suspect.
-
I'm going to be in Torino in the next 10 days, I'll tell any Toro fans I meet to be prepared to be disappointed and that Adams is us getting our own back for signing Lyanco from them..

Isn't that a Turkish/Japanese drink with a bit of a kick?

I agree with you (and often don't!). You do need a decent defence as a foundation but we were just a little too safe and risk averse, both in tactics and player selection and with our in game management and use of substitutes. With the amount of long kicking Pickford did it was like lower level Championship or below. It has its uses but not against a team like Spain with the players we have.

Let's hope Ross Stewart turns up to surprise us all.. Edit: had to go to the OS as I couldn't remember his name!
-
Brill, I can give them a bit of abuse in romanaccio. 😉

Interesting analysis in this article: https://www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/jul/15/turning-point-england-kyle-walker-throw-in-euro-2024-final-spain The throw was certainly met with a despairing groan in my pub.

Didn't stop Scotland appointing George Burley..

Not disagreeing with you at all, but perhaps hard working players could result in more movement off the ball and more concerted pressing, neither of which we saw. When a team is playing well and confidently at any level there will be that movement, and we didn't see it in this tournament. Why he persisted with Kane after half time I don't know. If you'd had a vote in the pub where I watched the game it would have been unanimous!
-
There were many grumblings in my pub about Kane. I don't particularly like it when there's a pile on but in this case I have to say that what was he there for and what did he contribute? No real movement and slow when he did, no pressing, he didn't win any balls, he didn't get off the ground.. So why wasn't he substituted at half time as the pressure Watkins put on made a difference? Rice I thought also had a poor game: slow in possession, poor passing, although in his case he wasn't helped by an unambitious and static team around him. It's the result I predicted but I wish we'd been a bit more ambitious: the only consolation was having a couple of pints less than I thought I would and saving a tenner!
