Although for every expert spouting one set of statistics, there's another expert with another view: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/oct/21/uk-population-growth-claim-disputed

I'm sure I had my first Rum & Black there, aged 14

I'm sure I've told you guys before about the time I jumped off the top board in the old Lido. Too scared to dive but dared to jump - and lost the top half of my bikini in the process

I remember the baths really well. My uncle, who was a water polo player, taught me to swim there and, within 3 years I was training with Southampton Swimming Club. The trainer was a Mrs Pearce - bit of a dragon I remember but good at her job. I used to have to swim a mile using just legs, then a mile using just arms, then a last mile conventionally. I gave it all up when I discovered boys - tch the folly of youth eh? I remember the hot Bovril but I always went for the hot Ribena and sticky bun. I always recall that the 'boys' baths were much nicer than the 'girls' baths for some reason.

Oh MOG I have to tell you this When my friend and I were in the 6th form we had Saturday jobs at Debenhams and then Owen Owen. We also used to work during the school holidays and one year we had to be Santa's little helpers at Owen Owen. We had to dress up as pixies and hand the correct present to Santa to give to the child. Nasty kids that we were, we used to give him a 'boy's' present for a little girl and vice versa. We got the sack

Funny - I always associate football thuggery with young guys with low IQs. I am surprised to see it's middle-aged men causing the trouble. I guess the common theme is LOW IQ

No but it is still on yahoo! I emailed Yahoo customer services and asked them if they were happy to give advertising space to such a scam. Got an autoresponse saying if you have a problem with a merchant....... So I just replied and said if advertising was more important to them than their customers being ripped off, so be it. The advert's still there

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/video/2009/oct/20/white-lions-baby-safari You have to put up with the Kenco advert first but worth the wait

I'm so so loving this thread. Marvellous for an expat like me! Talking of the Wendy House, and slightly out of area, does anyone else remember the house at the bottom of the dip between the Windhover and Bursledon (right hand side going towards Bursledon). A house there had a Romany caravan in the front garden. I always wanted to live there (in the caravan I mean)

That's the one. Thank you. I remember as a mere slip of a thing being quite overwhelmed by it, never having been anywhere quite so classy - being working class an' all that

What's the name of the pub, also considered very posh years ago, 'twixt Twyford and Fair Oak close to Marwell? The restaurant overlooked a lake.

Even further back I think that was the site of the original Sainsburys. I remember going there with my mother but I don't think it was a supermarket then - more of a conventional grocer's shop. I remember the Lyons Tea Shop too but my best memory is of May's (later to become Owen Owen I think). My grandfather was in the Merchant Navy and when his ship came in he used to treat us to lunch in May's restaurant. I thought it was the height of sophistication - especially icecream in a silver looking bowl FFS

See - that's what I thought. I phoned my bank to ask them to stop my debit card and issue a new one. They said that wouldn't stop the deductions from my current account as the debit card gave the crooks the 'in' to my current account. The bank also said that they couldn't intervene as I was 'in contract' with the crooks. :smt102 However, the Disputes department is looking into the whole matter. I guess if enough people complain, something might actually get done.

Quite agree GS. The problem is (and I'm sure TDD will agree) it's not apparent that you ARE signing up for repeat payments. You think you're just agreeing to a one-off payment!

I thought he meant someone on University Challenge was cheating by using a transistor radio.

No I simply gave them my debit card number online. This gives them access to my bank account does it not? I'm furious with myself for being caught up in all this. I always thought I was quite savvy about contracts etc. They've broken loads of consumer laws (eg they're supposed to send paper copy of Ts & Cs for online transactions apparently) The bank says I'm in contract with them. However, I've sent loads of evidence to the bank so hopefully they will sort it for me. Trouble is, as soon as one 'company' is barred from accessing the account, another company steps in. It seems grossly unfair to me but, hey, conmen don't care about fairness, do they. Apparently thousands of people in the US, Canada and here have been caught out by this so they must have raked in a f***ing fortune

Is the company name acaiburn, pristinehlth, mydiet, dazzlewhite etc. etc.? There is a HUGE scam going on whereby you apply for a free trial offer (of something) and, unbeknown to you, you have signed up for never-ending supplies of whatever it is you thought was free. Not only that, if you have 'tried', say, the toothpaste, you have also sgined up for diet pills, diet plans etc. etc. even though you're not aware that you did this. They will then proceed to take c £50 a month FOR EACH PRODUCT they decide to send you whether you want it or not. I suggest you Google the names in red above to see the true, horrible nature of this scam. I got caught out via the toothpaste one but my bank tells me there's nothing I can do as I 'signed up' (even though I didn't). However, my bank is going to look further into the matter. Just stopping your bank card will make no difference as it's the account rather than the card number that triggers the payment. I've notified Consumer Direct about it and I believe there's going to be a Class Action in the USA.

OMG I used to live in that road - bottom end near St Mary's church!!!!!!

Hey St Boggy! Another Sholing girl! Talking about Six Dials - anyone remember the Dolls Hospital there? (Probably not many since most of you are blokes )
-
I remember frequenting a coffee bar near there - it must have been on West End Road. At that time, I chose my current running mates by the size of their motor bikes LOL
-
From the foregoing, would I be wrong in thinking your user name matches your girth?

That was a very interesting read and brought back lots of memories for me. I'd forgotten about the Kasbah! I do still remember the Concorde - in fact I was in the same year at school as Cole Mathieson's daughter. I remember seeing Manfred Mann there. Ohhhhhhh - nostalgia rules
