I presume Robertson didn't get banged up then? Or at least not for very long?

Pardew: "It's a bit dysfunctional at the moment"
oxfordshire_saint replied to trousers's topic in The Saints
Bloody Poles, they come over here, steal jobs that could be being done by young Englishmen and they do it all for minimal wage..........oh -
Various reasons Segregation: due to how society is and how tribal football fans are in this country, it is probably a necessity now, which is sad. When I visited Germany to see a Bundesliga game apart from one end of hardcore fans, the rest of the ground was mixed, everyone having a beer and a laugh together, it's the same at rugby. Segregation stirs up a kind of "us and them" attitude. All you have to do is look at the behaviour of both sets of fans who sit either side of the actual divide, they'll spend more time looking at eachother than watching the game, giving it the pathetic w@nker signs and acting the billy big ******** from behind a row of stewards and/or police. Class: I know it may sound like a snobbish thing to say, but the majority of football fans are out and out working class, especially in the lower leagues. If you go to a football game, a rugby game and a cricket match, you will clearly see the difference in the sort of people who attend. Glorification: although I usually don't give a toss about violent films or computer games like Grand Theft Auto, I think films like "Football Factory" etc have certainly produced a generation of wannabees who only want to go to football games to goad opposition fans and run around in little gangs pretending they're hard.

The police had the dogs out for something happening out the front of Yates' too, I was in the Slug and Lettuce, so couldn't work out if it was away fans or ours.

We're technically unbeaten at home this season (although we've yet to win there) but both games away from home have been unbelievably poor, so I don't think it has any bearing. If the team isn't good enough, it isn't good enough, regardless of where the game is played.

I was thinking the same whilst watching yesterday, we won 7 corners compared to Brentford's 2 and the only one I can remember being a decent delivery was the one Trotman headed over after a flick on. It's just like when Oakley used to take corners for us, they always seemed to be floated in rather than whipped in with pace. As has been mentioned, I'm sure Murty, Schneiderlin or Harding could provide a better service. With the likes of Hammond and Trotman going up for aerial opportunities, we should make the most of it, could be the difference between a stuttering 1-1 draw like yesterday or a comfortable victory.

I was sat in block 34 and to be fair, I thought fan-wise it was a draw. Usually after they did a song, we responded in kind or vice-versa.

I was walking just infront of them on the bridge, they were a bunch of gobsh!te yoofs doing their very best to get a reaction out of someone, I can recall hearing the usual crap "you're not big time any more", "down with the Pompey" etc. To be fair most Brentford fans I saw throughout the day were ok, it was just that group of jumped up nobheads who stood out. They were all skinny little teens, but clearly felt that they could gob off as there were a few of them.

I thought today's attendance was pretty decent given that the takeover hype has died down and we've had some poor results. Very interesting to see that Reading could only get 16,000 for the visit of Sheffield United. I presume all their JCLs have all gone back to supporting Chelsea?

He was a beast in the air but my god, he is awful on the deck! If Pardew can teach the lad to make simple passes and not dive in clumsily in the tackle, he'll be a real star in this team. A few times today he tried to play it long but showed that he clearly doesn't have it in his locker! His physical presence is what we need though, so dominant in the air.

He's only been linked with Notts Co because of Sven. If they had their cash still, but no Sven, there wouldn't even be a story. Sven is the only reason Kasper Schmeichel went there and the only reason Didi Hamann was linked. Just look at the other clubs Campbell's been linked with, Newcastle and Basel.

I'm happy with the signings, it's just some of the dross that's been playing with them that's the problem! I firmly believe, however cliche the phrase may be, that Holmes will be "like a new signing" if he can get himself fit, we desperately need the width and service he'd provide. I'm sure Lambert would thrive if Holmes was providing the ammunition off the left. Once Mills is fit too, the left side is sorted. Just got to get the right side worked out!

Whatever happened last season, I will treasure the memory of us taking a huge following to the Madejski and turning over the in-form Reading on their own patch. Cheers Jan!

Sod the paintings, how much for the arty, female, Swedish flatmate?

As long as Cortese was there, Markus doesn't need to be. I can imagine he'll be over for the odd home game now and again, that's it.

I don't see why people are moaning about this one, we're a League One club now FFS. Given our flaws at the back, signing a mobile, giant of a centre-back, albeit on loan, is a bit of a coup. Let's see who's moaning when he nods in the opener against Brentford!

Should we change the stand names at St. Marys
oxfordshire_saint replied to dickyhale's topic in The Saints
We should really rename one of them the "El Khalej tackle on Kieron Dyer" stand -
To be fair, last night's game could have easily have been a Blue Square game, although that may be slightly insulting to the football played at Blue Square level.

I don't think fans are blaming him for the squad of players he's inherited, but it's what he's doing with them that gripes. Why has Gillett not played? Why did we line up against an average side with an utterly negative 4-5-1 formation? Why weren't subs made far, far earlier? It may take him a while to shape his own team, but when a game is slipping away and the opposition keeper has barely had anything to do, it doesn't take a tactical genius to see that the lacklustre 11 on the field needed shaking up with some changes. I'm not going to be part of the "Pardew Out" brigade, but he needs to start showing a bit of common sense, otherwise he will lose the fans quickly. I pray that the side he puts out against Brentford shows more heart, guile and mobility.

Exactly, we should seize on those times we actually manage to clear a corner and press the opposition. It happened to us when we won corners down the other end tonight, the ball would be cleared and the opposition would either force us backwards or they'd step up so much that any ball pumped back forward would just travel through to their keeper. It's basic stuff.

Swindon 1 v Saints 0 Post-Match Reaction
oxfordshire_saint replied to StuRomseySaint's topic in The Saints
I do remember that one and admittedly, it was a hospital pass, but he did do it a couple of other times too. If Kelvin receives a passback and there is an opposition player within 20 yards, I always get nervous. As a shot-stopper though, truly world class tonight. -
Another thing with our defence, on the rare occasion we clear a corner, should they not step up rather than holding a line on the edge of the 6 yard box?

Swindon 1 v Saints 0 Post-Match Reaction

I agree with all of that apart from a 10 for Kelvin. He made some wonder-stops, but his distribution still leaves a LOT to be desired, so an 8 IMO. -
Having read that, he's either (a) trying to protect the players, or (b) he is a complete tool. We got outplayed tonight by a side who had no other intention than to get about us and pump balls forward. It was a simple tactic and it got a result, we had no answer. We need to get used to this, because every away game and to a lesser extent, a lot of home games, will be just like tonight. At the time, Pardew was a great appointment IMO, but tonight his attitude was baffling.
