Like Christophe, I think SR could be a long term bonus to our club. We were on a downward slippery slope until they came in and while we're still sliding, I think SR have the financial clout to stop the rot. When SR first came on the scene, I was pissed off because they side-lined Ralph. But there's no denying they've spent money. It was completely wasted on that January window two years ago, but even last summer we spent £120m and were the fourth largest spenders in the premier league. Yes, it was again wasted but their positive intention has always been there; it's just the wrong people were at the top. Now there's been a change in personnel at senior management. Some doom mongers are saying that the club is rotten and failure is ingrained and we'll sink next year too but I don't subscribe to that. We will be one of the rich clubs of the championship next year. We have every chance of bouncing straight back.

Was prepared to give him a few games to see what impact he could make, but having watched us concede 8 and score none in the last four days is enough for me. I get it he's on a hiding to nothing, I get it that some players have thrown in the towel but what I don't get is his inability to adapt and try new tactics. He gives off an air of someone who wants out. That's understandable. He probably came in thinking he'd give it a punt and quickly realised his position was hopeless. But poor tactics and playing players out of position (why does he play Aribo at centre back?) tell me he isn't the one to lead us next year.

I've also come to the conclusion that only Fernandes and Ramsdale are premier league quality. Other than those two, our entire squad of players fall in to one of three categories: 1) Useless - Sugawara, AA, Smallbone, Aribo, Manning, Bree, Archer 2)Don't care anymore - KWP, Dibling, THB, ABK 3) Useless and don't care anymore - Sulemana, Downes, Stephens, Bednerek. Frankly, I won't be disappointed to see any of them go at the end of the season. Time for a massive clearout.

Records we could still beat / have beaten
OnceaSaintalwaysaSaint replied to lumuah's topic in The Saints
Yep, harsh on them but they'll also be part of the record. I actually don't mind us holding the record defeat record because we bounced back each time - but lowest points total; is something else. -
Chelsea 4-0 Saints - Match Thread
OnceaSaintalwaysaSaint replied to Football Special's topic in The Saints
Apparently, Chelsea currently haven't got a goalkeeper that's any good (not that should bother them) but nor do they have a fit striker. It's an ideal time to play them but our guys seem to have given up the ghost, so this could be a really dreary 2-0 to them. They also seem to have more than the usual morons who stare at the away fans all match and give it the verbals. There's a ginger OAP who's usually good for a laugh. -

The three teams to be relegated this year are predicted to be all the promoted clubs and to score a combined record low total of 63 points. It will beat the previous record low of 66 points set by last year's three promoted clubs of Sheff Utd, Burnley & Luton. That gulf between the premier league and championship is getting bigger and bigger! -
Is it the Manager or the Players?
OnceaSaintalwaysaSaint replied to Farmer Saint's topic in The Saints
After seeing consecutive managers being so pig-headed, impractical and unwilling to adapt, I would have said the blame between managers and players was 75/25 - but ultimately, I think it's the management that have caused this club to go in to freefall. It's not just SR either, the decline started before. I also believe Dragan wants to succeed. He pumped a load of cash in to the club when he first came in and he's now making changes when he's seeing things not working. Spors has a big job on his hands so I would like to see him taking a more public role in the coming months. -
Thinking of betting on football, how's Ivan Toney doing in the Middle East? If he wants to be reintegrated into English football, I'd be more than happy for Saints to take a punt on him. Genuinely think he could be the striker we've been missing for the last few seasons.

Must admit, I can't see us getting anywhere near £60m for Dibling. My guess (and it is a guess) is more like £30m for a teenager who has got a lot to learn and frankly looks a bit cumbersome. As to THB (who also looks a bit lardy), I'd be happy if he stays but offers over £25m will be given serious consideration.

Nope, never bet against your interests. Admittedly, haven't won much this season, but got one 2-1 this year which has recovered most of the losses.

Didn't realise Liverpool FC started in a chapel! First Spurs copy our iconic song and now the scousers...
-
It really wasn’t. Maybe you're right. It was just the moment and everyone got a little carried away. Anyway, his first touch was a knee ah that went to their striker and he scored so the mood soon changed.

Agreed and we don't need superstars to do it so why doesn't Juric at least try it? This man-for-man marking can be done for corners but yesterday you saw ABK being pulled totally out of position leaving a massive gap at the back. At Ipswich, it was Bednerek being pulled out of position leaving Delap to power through. Learn by mistakes Mr Juric.

Singing his name when he came on yesterday was pretty tongue in cheek. He hadn't been seen in ages and people remembered he has a German cap but you only had to see him warming up to realise he was unfit. When he sat down looking injured, someone nearby shouted 'sub him for Jack Stephens' which pretty much says all we need to know about ABK's standard.

Saints 0-4 Brighton - Match Thread
OnceaSaintalwaysaSaint replied to Lighthouse's topic in The Saints
Came away from the Brentford defeat at Christmas thinking it couldn't get any worse and along came today! In hindsight, when the team is realistically relegated before Christmas, this type of performance is predictable. Nothing to play for except pride and what's that worth to these multi-millionaire players? They really looked like they didn't give a toss today. As for ABK. It was laughable that he got the biggest cheer when he came on but that didn't last long. He promptly couldn't keep up with one of their players who eased past him and in fact looked like he's spent his time outside the team eating! Where do we go from here? In the short term, I'd change the formation and stack the midfield and play some of the kids. Must admit, I'm losing faith in Juric. He looks like he's given up too. -

I see Paddy Power has tweeted to Leicester fans that just when you think it couldn't get any worse and you've got the worse team ever, remember there is a team called Southampton FC. Well stuff you, Paddy. I've just lumped on with a 2-1 home win (well, ok a fiver!) and not with you Paddy because your odds are so skinny! -

Would like to see them try different formations. This one of leaving a hole in midfield that Juric seems to be trying at the moment isn't working. No real justification for saying this but would still like to see TP in the middle, Archer one side and Sulemana the other. -
I see Leicester fans are turning on their Director of Football as the cause of their woes. This is going to be a big summer for Mr Spors. Does Juric stay? Will he find an attacker who can scores us goals?

Have to agree. I can't remember a season when I haven't looked forward to a forthcoming game. Agreed, seasons often been a relegation battle where the thinking has been "if we get three points, there's still a chance" etc etc, but now we're out the FA Cup and our position in the league is hopeless, there's not a lot to get enthused about. I'm still interested to see which players make an impact though players like Will Smallbone really do need to be left out the side. It's not that he's hopeless - a lot of our players are hopeless - it's just he seems to run about the pitch everywhere the ball isn't, which for as midfielder is quite an art. -

But that's my question Saint Fan CaM. What is our strong midfield? We need Big Les stepping up and playing a defensive midfield roie, but to strengthen the midfield it needs bringing one of the attacking midfielders back more. -

I'd like to see us have a stronger midfield but don't know who we've got to do the job. Big Les and Aribo together are far too slow. Downes is all over the place and just does pathetic fouls and hopefully Juric saw enough of Smallbone last week to realise he shouldn't be playing for us. -
Are our Scouts really to blame?
OnceaSaintalwaysaSaint replied to OnceaSaintalwaysaSaint's topic in The Saints
Now you mention it, the list of players recruited that have been way off the mark is a lot greater than those that could have turned out to be good for us. It's also noticeable how we've recruited for a particular style (ie Tall Paul) then dropped that style and recruited a different manager. -
A lot of posters complain about our scouts and who they've brought to the club. Granted there have been some horrendous choices (Carillo!), but does the fault lie with them especially in recent times? You see Charlie Alcaraz playing a blinder for Everton, Brooks a regular starter for Bournemouth. Yesterday Joe Rothwell played a big part in Leeds' comeback. Charles is Sheff Wed's best player. And then there's the players here like Sulemana who perhaps aren't as bad as we thought after all. Personally, I still think Archer will make a mark one day. So maybe it's more we aren't playing to the players' strengths than recruiting players who aren't capable.
-
They've hijacked our song and like Newcastle fans, they think they're a bigger club than they are. I vaguely remember the days when us and them were vying for promotion to the old Division 1. Back to Dragan, he seems to have made changes at the top, so it'll be interesting to see Spors' impact in the coming months. We need to make sure we're doing a Sheff Uld/Burnley next year and challenging for promotion rather than taking too long to get going like Luton.

Two years ago when relegation was becoming obvious, I really despised quite a few of the players because you could see they were journeymen who didn't give a shit about our club. This time it's different. Apart from maybe Downes, we have players who are trying - they're just not very good. So there's more positivity and the starting point for a team rebuild is better this time. Plus we won't go back to possession football again!
