I was doing some Maths papers from the 60s and 70s (aimed at top 10% at the time) and they were easier than STEP II and III papers, on par with AEA and STEP I. These are also aimed at the 'top', but tbh, not that much has changed, other than the number of people taking such exams, and as such 'easier' questions to appeal to those of lower ability ought to be included.

Certain professions are impossible to get into without a degree.

FFS - work for GCSEs, to get into a decent college, do A-Levels, to get into a decent Uni, work at Uni to get a degree to get a job. All makes sense.
