Sky News interview with the leader of the organiser of the Jewish bloc of the Stop the War demonstrations. In keeping with the aims of the OP here. Also in keeping will be the Stop the War demonstration on Saturday; StW have been incredibly active this past week. Will be interesting to see how many people show up for this one. Hopefully the ceasefire will still be on.

    Ecclestone

Private Eye did, ahead of time. props to @saintwesty and @TomBowk for bringing it to my attention
  5. I knew it was you, which is why I brought your non-scouse arse (only half as it turns out) into the equation. I speak with local LFC fans all the time. They're a lot more realistic about why Lambert was bought and where he'll fit into the team. I certainly haven't heard the "replacement for Suarez" stuff out of them.
  6. Think it's best not to worry about salaries, particularly comparing them with others. It never ends well. People think they're worth more than they're getting, or should have more than someone else they happen to think is shít. I will say that there are very few opportunities to make a huge wedge when employed by someone else. You're there to make them money, unfortunately. Sure, you can become a high-powered exec and comfortably command a £100K salary, but that's at the cost of being utterly accountable (and expendable) if and when shít hits the fan. Some become such political animals they lose quite a bit of themselves on the journey. If you can meet your responsibilities, build a bit for the future and have fun while doing it, you're doing well, I reckon.
  7. Self pity city? What a laugh. Didn't see one confirmed Liverpool-based fan there, although @crstig sounds familiar. Perhaps he lives in Liverpool, and is self-pitying himself right now Tube. Good work, Lord D.
  8. Just a little poke Used to love Sensi myself. Played effectively, it's not much like football. Bshort passing works, but those long after touch passes were more effective if you could master it. If you watched two very good players go against each other, you could charitably call it a game full of Hollywood passes. Very little difference between that and hoofball
  9. Not bought a PS4 in spite of me yet, Col?
  10. Quite a smart move really; she was like a chaotic neutral version of Moriarty. Yeah, there are some ridiculous plot twists as well, I'm afraid. It's the work of Kurt Sutter, who has previous on The Shield, a better show imo. He's a real believer in conflict driving fiction, perhaps too much. A lot of shít seems to go wrong, south or get especially amped up in his shows, and it's hard not to spot it happening. It'd be unfair to say that SoA didn't have it's quieter moments, and there are also long running arcs which are attended to, but I think the best TV shows are a mix of loud and quiet. Sutter turns it up too much too often for my liking.

    Boris Johnson

Will David Cameron be worried, I wonder? Boris said he wasn't going to run for MP in 2015 17 times, according to many articles. Gotta give the bloke credit. He is smarter than Lord Melchett, who used the exact same plan an 18th time We all know that Boris running for MP means that Boris will be gunning for the PM's position. Quite a few disaffected Tories on the backbenchers that could organise a leadership challenge. The 80 or so that argued for a European exit during the petitioned Parliamentary debate of Europe might be top on his list.
  14. Oh aye, and I think that's fair enough. Our kids can behave like monsters in the house but are well behaved out and about. Still, it's bloody annoying listening to parents trying to micromanage their kids repeatedly.

    New TV

In PC World the other day and had a look at one of them curved 4K sets. Very very nice; colours popped - but not four grand nice. Looking forward to seeing these bad boys come down in price.
  16. I grew up in a noisy house so kids bother me a shítload less than hapless parents. Remember having brekkie at a hotel with the family. On the next table, there were a couple of well-spoken people with two young sons. The lads were being lads, occasionally leaving their chairs so they could climb back up; stuff that small nippers do. Premier Inn, like - so no pretensions. Fk me, you should have heard the kip of the parents. "Boys. Boys. Stop being so naughty. You will be in terrible trouble if you continue" They weren't being naughty by any stretch of the imagination; the up-tight clueless parents were about 100x as annoying.

  19. I like Luther a lot; proper moody and is a good advert for both Britain and British TV. It's definitely not your typical cop-shop drama where people sit about drinking cups of tea solving "friendly" murders. It is hilariously terrible by time they introduce the Northern Irish. Check this shít out. He's not even the worst.

    Israel / Gaza

Good post, aintforever. The conditions for Palestinians are intolerable and seemingly unending. Fk knows what it must be like to actually live there, to not be able to rely on things that we take for granted. Galloway's video recounts the Warsaw ghetto uprising in the Second World War. The Jews of Warsaw were similarly disenfranchised of pretty much all rights, left to rot, and had two effective choices; die quietly or rise up. They rose up against their oppressors despite being hopelessly outgunned, using whatever they had. Galloway doesn't see much of a distinction between the uprising in Warsaw and the resistance in Gaza. Neither do I, or the piece you reproduced. Die now, or die later. Horrible spot to be in, and I suspect impossible to imagine from most cosy Western perspectives.

    Boris Johnson

Stage-managed, probs. Boris was positioning himself in a couple of articles about the EU this week; he has also spoken out more stridently on Gaza than Cameron. Warsi was speaking about a senior Tory that was not a minister. I wonder... I worry about this. Seems to have a bit of a temper, doesn't have many political allies and hasn't picked his people well in the past. Great orator (in his own way); just wondering if he can walk that talk.

    Israel / Gaza

My objections cover more than military might. During the course of this thread, we have discussed all kinds of inequality, from military capability to human rights. Israel has a right to defend itself, but cannot claim that every action it takes is purely defensive. For that reason, I've absolutely no problem with the likes of Iron Dome, which is wholly defensive. I do have a problem with the IDF rolling into Gaza, reportedly because the Hamas leadership were supposed to have killed three teenagers, a story that the Israeli's won't even stand behind anymore. The latest is that it was a "lone cell", operating outside the command structure. As I said in my earlier post, I'll condemn anyone who murders non-combatants - but Hamas did not order those deaths. The initial stated reason for rolling in doesn't exist. I accept that the tunnels are a huge problem for the Israelis. I was reading a Jane's article about the efficacy of those tunnels and the way they change conditions. There are no fronts. It's a "360 degree" battlefield; this incursion into Gaza has been a costly one for the IDF in terms of casualties. http://www.janes.com/article/41421/palestinian-militants-inflict-substantial-casualties-on-israeli-forces-in-gaza On the need for a political solution, we're agreed - but it'll never happen unless Israel can be brought to the table. Israel's voters certainly don't seem keen. The Moshe Feiglin character that had Nazi-like plans, and Verbal referred to as a fascist was the fourth most popular politician in Likud in 2009; fair to say his views enjoy significant support. In my view, the US needs to rescind the get-out-of-international-law-free card it has handed to the Israelis. As you've said, it's a hugely complex situation - who needs another variable? Oddly enough, there are hardline Israelis calling for exactly the same thing, but for different reasons. They want to be able to prosecute their affairs without "asking permission", something that may very well happen if they get their wish.
