Council crack down on English Speaking taxi stickers
hamster replied to Huffton's topic in The Lounge
My apologies .com, I read that wrong and agree that driving excessive hours is very dangerous indeed, sorry. That'll teach me to try read too fast. Are the drivers not asking to be judged though? Surely they want to be judged, otherwise why display the signs? Anyway you are spot on I am pre judging them, I am doing it on the basis that they appear to think that I and others will be more inclined to jump in their cab purely because they 'speak proper English'. I want a cab to pick me up within a reasonable amount of time - most do. I want a cab to be clean - most are. I want a cab to get me from A to B in the shortest amount of time - most do. I also like to chat on my way home after a night on the beer, I think it is polite but accept that some find it a little grating, - (but hey) I'm paying so I think I am aloowed to set the rules on that one surely? I can not remember one single instance, when riding in a cab that I have not been able to engage the driver in a little light conversation. Maybe I should use them more frequently but seriously is anyone else (apart from the drivers in question) complaining about this? Is it really that rife? If it really is causing problems for the fare paying passengers then I 100% retract my comments on this thread, seriously. -

This is getting a little silly now, I am sorry but it is. On the basis of a few taxi drivers not speaking brilliant English we are making assumptions that foreign born cabbies work excessive hours and might well be under the influence of alcohol to boot! Sorry, but that I think this is precisely why some of us have a problem with these bloody signs. It's not just what they actually say, it runs far deeper and is much more sinister than that. Why oh why is it assumed that an 'English Speaker' is squeeky clean and would not commit other crimes? Prejudice is 'to pre judge' is it not? The sooner these drivers do learn the lingo to an acceptable standard the sooner we can get tothe nub of this imho. Taxi! -
Are any of these additives like Redex actually worth the money? I can't remember what substance it is, but there is an off the shelf product that is supposed to give you an extra 10-15% power. Would it be Celulose (sp) thinners perhaps?

I personally think that bi-lingual cabbies are an asset to the City and it's economy as a whole. I am sorry but I really can;t get my head around this, many is the time that I have had cabbies get the A-Zout and more recently a SatNav is required equipment. Would iit be okay for taxi's to require that their fare be English speaking too? -
Wayne Bridge's gf was doing a book signing I think.

I reckon it should be law that people should take at least one UK holiday pe ryear. Me and mrs h are off on the narrowboat at the end of this month, Allhallows at the end of March, narrowboat again with 2 x GK's and a spare cook again in May, hopefully Espana (Mijas) for a freebie at MIL's flat, St Ives in October. Plus a couple of City breaks in between. btw Mike, my nipper managed to get 2 weeks in a Disney hotel, flights, and passes for 2 adults and two kids (11 and 7) for about £3,500. I think it is an obscene amount just to see a six foot man in a mouse costume but apparently it's a good deal!

BUMP It would appear that Rickie and Kelvin have jum,ped on the hamster beard bandwagon. I urge all saints fans to not shave until Saints next lose. NB Kelv is evidently a master beard grower, I noticed the stubble last week but blimey look at it he must be rubbing something into it imo.

It really should not require explaining that these @English Speaking Driver' have racist undertones, it really shouldn't. I can accept that some have issues with migrant workers who's language skills are not as good as UK born people, but driving 'us' around can only reap positive results for those with issues over this. 'Their' 'english' will surely improve as a result. Does no-one else get this? Hiw did we all end up speaking so eloquently ourselves, it was not by being excluded form everyday conversation. I will add a 'FFS', but I do not mean it in a nasty way, it just seems silly not to welcome people into our community and our day to day lives. How can I best explain what I am trying to say?? Okay here goes. I work with quite a few volunteers. Some I have known since I started my job 7 years ago, and some have helped out as part of their re-cuperation (sp) following long-term illness and accidents, they tend to stay for a few months, regain their confidence and get back out into the paid employment field. It is a win-win situation not least because in supporting me, and my colleagues, they are supporting our service users. They also benefit in gaining a fantastic experiance to add to their CV's. I am sure Johnny B will confirm that volunteer work is a great assett to anyone's CV. On a few occasions I have worked closely with volunteers from East European countries. One woman came to us having left her job as head of mathematics in a secondary school in Belarus. Her english was 'patchy', she was lovely and we had lots of laughs over the few months she was with us and was and her english improved really quickly through conversation. The only work that she was ever offered during this time was 'care work', (nothing at all wrong with care work, actually I would say that care work is my primary role). Anyway, the authorities would not recognise her qualifications either and eventually she decided to return 'home' as she said with a few exceptions, she never felt that she was welcomed here. What a complete waste and very sad in my opinion. We should imho adopt the motto "ADJUVATE ADVENAS" btw, she had a great arse too, but obviously it would not be professional of me to even look at a volunteer's arse but that in my book makes her very employable. -
What's the bettimng that when our boys get hold of these they have to buy their own batteries for them. Obviously that would only happen under a Tory government though. Vote Labour LOL

Bloody Sun, they could have held this until next week the swines. Still, I am sure ther will be something else to fill the sports pages involving them nearer the date of The Big Match. Poor old Avram, barely a day goes by when there is not a TV OB unit pitched up outside their training ground down Stoneham Lane. I see hem on my way to work, the first time last year, I stopped to ask what the hot story was? It was when they had given Tony Adams the heave ho and was amidst the speculation. Now though it is becoming annoying and I am tempted to run the bastards over. Actually, the amount of times I've seen their players doing illegal left turns into Stoneham lane near to the Concorde Club I am temptoed to tip off the 'Filth'. Now there's an idea. Nah maybe not, I may be be many things, but I ain't no grass. Any Saints supporting traffic cops on here fancy a tea break in the Concorde Club car park praps?

Yes you can, there's an add-on thingy. I use it all the time, still waiting for someone to view me  I find it best to have no friends as it saves the heartbreak of losing them later.

I reserved a space for a friend do that he could take his nipper on to see the FA Cup at SMS this afternoon. He now tells me that he hs already don eit himself. It is for Visitor number 1 at 15:00 (the very first group). The tour lasts about half an hour. During that time you get to score a goal at Wemberley and they will post the vid on the FA website for you to download later. http://www.facuptrophytour.co.uk/the_experience.php I'd hate to deny someone the opportunity to talke part so if anyone wants to take the place please answer below. You will need the booking ref number and my mates name, alternatively I can forward the e-mail to you and simply print it off. First come.....

Ther's a local vet's league, local being Soton and Eastleigh I think. Apparently some fairly handy players dotted about too. I've heard it's farily even though as there are many many more playing who have been refused medical insurance due to their poor physical state. I am rubbish at organising stuff but would be very nterested in taking part should someone else fancy taking it on.

Sue, I was only joking my dear. I am crap at football, and even my bucketload of enthusiasm wouldn't get me through even 45 minute. I am sure that you could beat me at just about anything Sue I'm not even as prolific a drinker as I used to be either. When I played for Eastleigh Post Office we would kick off at Chestnut Avenue at 10 and be waiting for the Cricks to open with our muddied and bloodied knees at 12. I would often wake up for work at 5 on Monday morning still in my football kit! Happy days.
