  1. I actually like the French system, which incidentally is ranked the best in the world. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/07_28/b4042070.htm It is essentially a mix of public and private funding. Labour are often credited with the creation of the NHS and the Welfare state, but for socialists out there, I challenge you to read Winston Churchill's 1945 election manifesto - please read the sections on National Insurance, Health and Education. http://www.conservative-party.net/ma...anifesto.shtml If you can't be bothered to read it, here are the key points: Health The health services of the country will be made available to all citizens. Everyone will contribute to the cost, and no one will be denied the attention, the treatment or the appliances he requires because he cannot afford them. We propose to create a comprehensive health service covering the whole range of medical treatment from the general practitioner to the specialist, and from the hospital to convalescence and rehabilitation; and to introduce legislation for this purpose in the new Parliament.
  2. .... and in the same report (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/799444.stm) France is ranked first. But in France, you have to pay when you see a GP, so your point is?????
  3. Can't argue with that A good friend of mine is a GP and a partner in the practice. His earnings have more than doubled to over £150,000 per annum over the last 10 years. Many surgeries are renumerated/incetivsed based on treating people with one of ten named ailments/illnesses. Therefore, he is more keen to treat one of those "on the list" as he has targets to hit and at the same time gets well rewarded for hitting them. How is this any different to the Canadian example you cited....and this is happending within our morally superior and beloved NHS - driven by a central policy from the beloved socialists in whitehall. As I keep saying, the NHS is better than no NHS, but stop pretending it is somthing which it is clearly not.
  4. I don't expect it to or want it to treat everything, in fact it can't afford to and therefore it has to put a price on poeples lives. Most people, like BTF's relative are lucky and get funding whilst some do not. There is an ever-increasing lottery feel to our healthcare system. Unfortunately it is based upon arbitrary government targets and budgets No there is not a specific arbitrary figure so to speak, however as budgets are arbitrary (along with the opinion of clinical need) and the fact that these are linked to whether you get treated or not, you could argue that arbitrary values are placed on people lives - depending upon where you live. My father-in-law was refused life saving heart surgery on the basis that the benefit gained was not worth the money - you try explaining that to my wife. As it happens, we had to privately fund the op ourselves. But if you want to be a chick with a ****...... roll on up
  5. No they don't place an arbitary price on anyone's life, they place a very real price usually based on the cost of the drugs - this may be more or less than the $20,000 quoted. Still placing a price on life though, isn't it?
  6. It's only a matter of time. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1576704/Dont-treat-the-old-and-unhealthy-say-doctors.html The NHS place a monetary value on someone's life? You're pulling my leg aren't you? http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/health/Bristol-grandmother-refused-cancer-drug/article-935954-detail/article.html Mrs Jarvis, 66, said: "They are saying that for the sake of £10,000 a year my life is not worth saving. How could they put that price on my life?" This one is for the Americans on here.... http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/American-Man-Offers-To-Pay-For-Cancer-Drug-Refused-by-NHS-So-Dad-Jack-Rosser-Can-See-Daughter-Grow/Article/200812215174349 Look, I would rather have the NHS than not have the NHS, but people need to be honest and stop pretending it is something which it is not. This is no different to what they are doing over the pond.
  7. "Free at the point of use" is a leftie smokescreen which infers that healthcare is free, when in fact, it is not. It is in fact "pre-paid" if you are a tax payer. If is only free if you are a non-contributor to society. I just wish the lefties would be honest about it, that's all. As Clown and Co don't know the meaning of honest, why is every one getting their knickers in a twist over the septics????
  8. My last post kind of gets to the point. In short, everyone is wetting themselves over US Right Wing Lies about the NHS (particularly the lefties) when our very own goverment lie every time they peddle the old "free at the point of use" bull. Thankfully I am posting on a forum that is free at the point of use (except for when my subscription is due).
  9. Sorry, I didn't get back to you sooner, but I was eating my sandwich which incidentally was FREE at the point of use - how about that? (the fact I bought it on my way to work this morning has nothing to do with it) I have no problem with the NHS, well apart from the wastage but that can be sorted easily enough and is an argument for another day. However, I have a problem with the leftie liars that try to pretend it is free - This leftie lie is part of a whole smokescreen to make thick voters believe they will get something for nothing in life and then we wonder why there are so many idle scroungers???? Our governement lies are greater than those of the loony right in the good ole u s of a.
  10. Something that costs £110bn a year is not free. NHS refuse treatment??? Never! http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/news/Cancer-mum-loses-treatment-appeal/article-1177937-detail/article.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/5955840/Patients-forced-to-live-in-agony-after-NHS-refuses-to-pay-for-painkilling-injections.html Don't worry though, the lefties will pay for one of these..... http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/112058/-10m-NHS-bill-as-sex-change-operations-soar
  11. Exactly.
  12. Very difficult to calculate as what they don't take off you now, they will only borrow and you will be paying it back for years. Very crudely, though, if you take the spend of £110,000,000,000 (as per Special K) and divide it by the population, lets say 60,000,000, then the NHS spend per head is nearly £1834 per annum. Working out your contribution is quite difficult as it may be more or less than £1834 depending on your circumstances / salary etc.
  13. What do you mean Delldays? Are you suggesting that we actually pay for our healthcare system? Surely this cannot be, as all the lefties keep telling us it's free. Seriously, I think total annual spend is about £100bn per annum, which equates to about 3.5 Northern Rocks
  14. That's right, the NHS is totally free and the budget for running it magically appears out of thin air. Perish the thought of actually having to pay for healthcare - who would do that? I just don't get these johnny foreigners, they should copy our system of a zero cost healthcare system. We may not have one of these....... But we do have one of these....... The difference being that at least in the first scenario they need your PIN before they rob you blind, unlike the second scenario where they simply help themselves to your pay packet.
  15. Domination has nothing to do with population or fertility rates....it is to do with power....predominently military power, but also economic (as you can't really have one without the other.... see USSR). How is it the Romans, French, English and the like had so much influence over the world? It had nothing to do with the fertility rate. They were economic and military power houses which enabled them to dominate and influence other nations with greater populations and fertility rates. The biggest "threat" of this century will not be from the Muslims, it will be from the Chinese. As the fastest growing economic and military powerhouse, they are set to dominate in the next century as the US has done in the last Simples. Next question.
  16. Indeed, it is an abbreviation for "hear, all ye good people, hear what this brilliant and eloquent speaker has to say!" FFS
  17. I have to say, when I read your original post I thought "he needs to reach for one of those B&H PDQ". When you are a heavy smoker for a prolonged period, giving up is life changing and even liberating, whilst at the same time a major challenge. In my case I blame no-one else. For me, I started on a rebellious streak and over my late teens it became habitual, almost part of my routine. I think it is more psychological than chemical. I grew up on strict routine, I live my life by routine and am a creature of habit. I guess for others it could be dependency, insecurity or an escape. Who knows?
  18. Well done Jake, you're hmoe and dry. I stopped the Champix 2 weeks ago. I was fine with them at first, but then felt like throwing up every time I took one more recently (as someone else pointed out). So although I have been off of the drugs for the last two weeks, I did have a couple of ciggies this weekend. Therefore I am not totally clean per say and am really ****ed off at the fact that I did so, especially as they were not even enjoyable. Perhaps this is a good thing as it will spur me on (i.e. it's like going back with an ex and realising that she weren't all that afterall). I still think I am on the home straight as I don't rely on them like I used to - ie the habbit is broken and I don't crave the Nicotine. They say you have got to get to at least 3 months to completely break free. So, I've reset the counter and will go again, without Champix or patches (because I know I can do it). I've setup a monthly Direct Debit of £227.50 (the equivalent to what I used to spend of cigs) and it is surprising how it adds up - nearly £500 so far - thats a season ticket and some. Will report back in a few weeks to let you know how I am getting on.
  19. Do we all have to wear name badges with our Forum names on???? I have to say, it could be interesting Do people with multiple identities have to wear more than one badge or do they gat an extra large one????
