I don't think it should be used as a "catch all defence" but, by the same token, it shouldn't be dismissed out of hand everytime it is given in defence either. It works both ways.

There's a difference between: "Planned to do it at some stage (e.g. at Christmas if things weren't going well) but more recent events brought it to a head much quicker than Cortese had envisaged" and "Planned to do it on the exact date that he did regardless of events" I'd rather venture it was the former than the latter.

Would have taken Holloway....not that he would have fitted in with Cortese in any shape or form!
