Watched The French Connection again the other night - this time in blu-ray. A great film - excellent performance from Gene Hackman (as usual). Fantastic chase scene through Brooklyn.

I saw Neil Innes (of Bonzo Dog Dooh Dah Band, Monty Python, Rutles, Rutland Weekend Television fame) at Hugh's Room in Toronto a month ago. Excellent concert (solo performance).

I saw the two of them in concert at The Riverboat (a folk club in Toronto) ca. 1973. I'm also a big fan. My favourite albums are Late For The Sky (from the early period) and I'm Alive (from the more recent stuff). I have to admit that I lost interest a bit in his more overtly political period on the 80s (Lawyers in Love, World in Motion, Hold Out, Live in the Balance). I much prefer his songs about personal relationships. Browne's and Lindley's tour continues across the U.S., after they're done in the UK. No dates announced yet, though, for eastern Canada. I hope they make it to this part of the world!

Miles Ahead by Miles Davis (1957) - the first of several collaborations with Gil Evans (composer, arranger and band leader). Davis is the soloist; Evans arranges and conducts a 19-piece big band. Great stuff!

I ordered that a couple of days ago from Amazon - along with the deluxe 2-CD remastered re-issue of Exile on Main Street. Should be delivered tomorrow! BTW, did you see Browne and Lindley during their recent UK concert tour?

Live at the Fillmore East by Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Recorded in March, 1970. It's the first live release featuring guitarist Danny Whitten. Rock on!

The Blanton-Webster Band by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra. This is a superb 3-CD collection (66 tracks, in all) of remastered material recorded between 1940 and 1942. Actually, it's all the stuff he recorded during those years - for RCA Victor. Lots of familar pieces of Ellingtonia, which he would continue to record many times throughout the rest of his career. This is reputed to be the peak of Ellington's work. It features, amongst many other excellent musicians, the key figures of Jimmy Blanton on bass and Ben Webster on tenor sax - hence the name of the album. If you like Ellington, or swing jazz, this one is a must.

Basher - The Best of Nick Lowe

If I had to pick one LP, then it would be Pet Sounds with the magnificent tracks "God Only Knows" and "Caroline, No". Are you familiar with Sunflower? It came out a year before Surf's Up. As much as I like the latter LP, I do think Sunflower is a more consistent effort. BTW, Sunflower and Surf's Up are available together as a remastered two-for-the-price-of-one deal.

The Beach Boys' double-album CD release: Carl and the Passions : So Tough and Holland. I always much preferred their mid-to-late 60s experimental stuff, rather than the surfing stuff from the early 60s. My favourite LP of theirs: Sunflower.

Good film - I've seen it a few times. Great work from Finney and Courtenay.

I would really like to see this film - it was made by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Not available over here, unfortunately.
