  1. A lot of hype accompanied the recent, remastered re-release of Exile on Main St. The "critical mass" seems to have anointed Exile ... as the Stones best LP. I can't agree. Still sounds like a murky swamp to me. And I have no clear sense of what the music means, what it's about - Jagger's lazy, slurry vocals bury the lyrics, which are almost impossible to make out. It's the same with every track. A few phrases can be discerned, but the gist of the song itself is lost, track after track. A different story with Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers. Great songs that you can hear and make out all the words, and so - hey - the songs actually mean something. But I digress. So, what is your favourite Stones album? Which one do you think is the best? My vote is Beggar's Banquet. Good variety of music styles, great production, and many song gems from Jagger-Richards. Having said that, it's still worth getting the new release of Exile ... - it sounds better than it ever has, and there is a second disc included with some good out-takes and alternative takes from the LP, or from the same era. There's also a vinyl release. And a deluxed edition release which includes the vinyl and CD versions!
  2. Well, TBH, there are a fair number of Saints "fans" on here who are quick to "bash" Saints at any opportunity. Moaning's their favourite MO it would seem.
  3. Chris Marsden.
  4. Pretty much retired, now. Here's his official website: http://www.ronniehawkins.com/
  5. In Canada the entire tournament is being shown live on CBC-TV (our national broadcaster) and via live-streaming on the CBC's internet page. They're also re-broadcasting all games later the same day.
  6. My Dad was uninterested in football, although he used to do the Pools most weeks. I first went to the Dell by myself in the early sixties, when I was about 11. That first moment of stepping inside a football ground and seeing the pitch surrounded by the stands - magic! Nic Hornby describes the feeling really well in the opening section of Fever Pitch.
  7. TBF, she reads them; she doesn't write them.
  8. The correct term is "gored". HTH
  9. Trick question? I always thought MLT scored 48 out of the 49 penalties he took.
  10. New Labour was not a socialist government. Repeat: New Labour was not a socialist government.
  11. Muswell Hillbillies (1971) by The Kinks. Brilliant!
  12. Watched The French Connection again the other night - this time in blu-ray. A great film - excellent performance from Gene Hackman (as usual). Fantastic chase scene through Brooklyn.
  13. I saw Neil Innes (of Bonzo Dog Dooh Dah Band, Monty Python, Rutles, Rutland Weekend Television fame) at Hugh's Room in Toronto a month ago. Excellent concert (solo performance).

  16. Ah, yes. The Great Fatsby! He's good, but not that good.
  17. I saw the two of them in concert at The Riverboat (a folk club in Toronto) ca. 1973. I'm also a big fan. My favourite albums are Late For The Sky (from the early period) and I'm Alive (from the more recent stuff). I have to admit that I lost interest a bit in his more overtly political period on the 80s (Lawyers in Love, World in Motion, Hold Out, Live in the Balance). I much prefer his songs about personal relationships. Browne's and Lindley's tour continues across the U.S., after they're done in the UK. No dates announced yet, though, for eastern Canada. I hope they make it to this part of the world!
  18. Miles Ahead by Miles Davis (1957) - the first of several collaborations with Gil Evans (composer, arranger and band leader). Davis is the soloist; Evans arranges and conducts a 19-piece big band. Great stuff!
  19. I ordered that a couple of days ago from Amazon - along with the deluxe 2-CD remastered re-issue of Exile on Main Street. Should be delivered tomorrow! BTW, did you see Browne and Lindley during their recent UK concert tour?
  20. I'm dazed by that comment.
  21. Live at the Fillmore East by Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Recorded in March, 1970. It's the first live release featuring guitarist Danny Whitten. Rock on!
  22. Wow! Time-lapsed tracking shots in HD. Very impressive! Thanks for the link. :smt041
  23. The Blanton-Webster Band by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra. This is a superb 3-CD collection (66 tracks, in all) of remastered material recorded between 1940 and 1942. Actually, it's all the stuff he recorded during those years - for RCA Victor. Lots of familar pieces of Ellingtonia, which he would continue to record many times throughout the rest of his career. This is reputed to be the peak of Ellington's work. It features, amongst many other excellent musicians, the key figures of Jimmy Blanton on bass and Ben Webster on tenor sax - hence the name of the album. If you like Ellington, or swing jazz, this one is a must.
