George Galloway wins Bradford West byelection - fluke or...
Saintandy666 replied to saintbletch's topic in The Lounge
Respect are hardly the Muslim Brotherhood. Galloway won, because whatever you think about him, and I don't agree with him before anyone attacks me as a sympathiser, he is an effective campaigner. He got on the ground at this election and made sure his vote turned out. I don't think we can look too much into this though as labour have won the last 5 by elections. Cataclysmic night for the coalition though, doesn't bode well, but was to be expected. And this comes from a paid up member of the Liberal Democrats. -
I don't really see how that is relevant to anything. You have no idea what 'people like me' are like as you know nothing of me whatsoever. For what it is worth though, I do not think that Uranium powered nuclear power does have a long term future, but Thalium based Nuclear Power is one to look into a lot. The UK should invest in tidal power. We are a bloody island afterall.
-
That doesn't solve the underlying issue of being reliant on such a small number of countries for the majority of energy needs. We need to switch to renewables and Nuclear etc... On petrol and diesel actually, there is some very interesting stuff going on where they build DNA from scratch and put it in a cell so it builds diesel and so on. That is the future.
-
Fair enough, but it's still a worry to be reliant of such a small group of countries for the vast majority of our energy needs.

I'm sure my parents can't wait until I leave in October! I will be the last one.
-
makes me worry what would happen if one day OPEC decided, **** you UK, we're not selling you oil any more for whatever reason. We'd all be ****ed. We need to diversify our energy, for our own sakes.

Cheers. How much more money do they want?

Makes me sad I love space related stuff, hope NASA or someone else can get it together and we can start exploring again soon! On a slightly related note, anyone see this... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17539315

I read that just a minute ago somewhere that it is more than likely there will be no strike now, at least it is leaning that way. Can someone enlighten me as to what this is specifically about as officially it is 'Health and Safety and Terms and Conditions' which could be pretty much anything...

I absolutely thank Nicola loads. It is his vision after all. He brought the plans to Liebherr who thankfully wanted to invest. I am so glad we got actual businessmen who know what they are doing.

Every cloud... Good news for Gideon at last then

I meant the general tabloid media. Nothing against Mail readers. Some of my family are among them.
-
Thank you. Pretty much all I want to say.
-
Because the original message was stock up now. But the strike isn't coming any time soon, so there is no need to stock up as that petrol station owner said. They have reverted back on that now to keep your tank over half full. Which still encourages people to go out and buy buy buy! I have never claimed people have ever listened to every word the government has said. You put words in my mouth.
-
Not saying that at all. All I'm saying is that the government told people to stock up with cans in their garages and fill up their cars, so people went out to petrol stations causing shortages. They exacerbated the problem. I live very well thank you.
-
Not just the Mail and co. It's mainly the governments fault. They have made a total balls up of their response to this. It has not been a good week for the coalition and labour are skyrocketing in the polls. I bet they can't believe their luck. it also seems the Sun have it in for David Cameron and the Tories now post-hacking scandal, so they should be afraid.
-
Exactly, the unions aren't striking yet, and no strike is going to happen for a couple of weeks if it even does. So there is no need to panic buy.
-
If people remained calm and realised a strike is still a long way away. Listen to this man, he is sensible - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17550120 There is no need to panic buy at the moment.
-
The newspapers were revelling in it though. Certain newspapers love whipping up a panic, but I agree with you. The most blame lies with Maude.
-
Yes, you a re right, of course. But it is not the unions fault that everyone is stockpiling now when they don't need to. Now, I'm not entirely sure what they are striking over, so I can't comment on the validity of the strike and as I don't say 'never strike', I'll wait to read more up on that. However, there is no need to panic buy now... there has to be a weeks notice first. There won't be a strike(if there even is one) for another couple of weeks. It would be funny really, if not so serious. The unions don't even need to strike any more to bring about the effects of strike. All they need to do is threaten it and all the Daily Mail sheep go out and panic buy causing shortages. There really doesn't seem ANY need to panic buy right now.
-
Hardly the unions fault. If everyone just stopped panicking so much and rationally thought through a strategy... i.e wait until a strike is definitely on first and buy reasonably, this could be avoided. I blame the tabloids for their headlines and Francis Maude.

I think the main problem is getting them integrated into our system. I remember at school, while there were obviously exceptions to the rule, a large majority of nepalese pupils kept themselves to themselves, largely talking in their own language rather than mixing in some sort of de facto social segregation. I think there is fault on both sides for this, though towards the end of my time there, they did make effort to harbour understanding of the different cultures to mix kids up, but I think it takes more than what they did to integrate the students properly.
-
It's not exactly their fault. Many of the nepalese people who are settling here(who also bravely served our country), are old and so need a sit down every so often. There obviously aren't enough benches. Build some more. And also, I doubt every bench going is totally full up to the brim or are these people so racist they can't even bear to sit on the same bench? Where I live has had a similar large increase in the Nepalese community and I have no problem whatsoever with them. They all seem like very polite decent people.
