Like the 5,000 who wouldn't have bothered for the Charlton game but suddenly found the money/got time off work/didn't have a surprise birthday party when we found out we had Man United in the cup that day instead. I think it's a pretty fair assumption to make that the reason they went was because of who we were playing, not because they wanted to see Saints.

I don't doubt like your mate there will be some genuine cases. But not 8000-10000 fans that in the premier league had no problem but now can't afford too or are too busy with work and family stuff to go to games.
