  1. Am I the only one then who thinks Daniel Day Lewis is just a giant ham who tramples on every film he's in?
  2. I think you're probably right about the young man's book thing. He seemed terribly wracked with existentialism. It was a rollicking good yarn in the end though; once Fowles had set him up it was compelling to see him torn apart.
  3. Yup. It's ****.
  4. It got much better.
  5. Erk! Went out and bought a full back before the close-season rush and despite checking for temperament and all that stuff, he sent team morale plummeting. Just about scraped a 3-2 against a **** team at home. Now it's down to me and the other decent human team, on level points going into the last game. A draw would be enough for me, but he did spank me in the opening match.
  6. Not enough information.
  7. This is all a bit sad. 19c was being a bit of a nob, but surely a telling off would suffice?
  8. I've got a smart arse.
  9. That's a massive bone* of contention at the moment as they have been dragged into it and (quite rightly imo) don't feel it to be their fault or problem. *I said 'massive bone'.
  10. Company went into administration over a month ago. Only shops that are closing down (by no means all of them) are offering those kinds of deals.
  11. +1 This argument is mentalism of the highest order. It's nice to support a team that wins.
  12. I think I might be in a similar boat to you, Jeff. Another absolutely thumping win at the weekend keeps me top, with a whopping +72 GD. But I was caught napping in my first two games after promotion and those dropped points look like proving crucial. I actually reckon I could give a league V side a decent game, but that's in the future. Need to get past my only genuine challenger on the last day of the season. My plans for the close-season involve promoting 2 or 3 from the youth team and getting them up to speed, promoting a senior player to coach (much cheaper than hiring externally) and possible modest stadium expansion, while leaving something in the ol' warchest for a decent fullback.
  13. I'm not sure you can blame the Lib Dems for the fact that people don't vote with their conscience...
  14. That shares a surprising number of gags with this article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/nov/16/charlie-brooker-christmas-television-adverts
  15. Prince. Or I'm not interested.
  16. Still top on goal difference (by about 30 goals!) with 3 to play. But just discovered, to my horror, that there's no guaranteed promotion from div VI. Apparently only the top 50% of 1st placed finishers get automatic promotion, with the current benchmark being 31 points and about +70 GD. I'm only on 27 points, so if I do manage to finish top (crunch match in a couple of weeks) I'll have to take part in a play-off against a team from div V. On the plus side, I absolutely spanked some chancers 7-0 yesterday.
  17. +1 And the skronky dub-jazz apocalypse of Bass Clef in the bar beforehand was meaty.
  18. Has anyone read The Magus, by John Fowles? I'm about 100 pages in and really struggling. The protagonist appears to be a complete arse and there's a lot of bland descriptions of Greek hillsides. Can someone assure me it gets better? There's only so many books a man can read in a lifetime and this is a long one...
  19. And where were they when the diggers came to Twyford Down? Scabs.
  20. Also, what's with Liam Brady... http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_5703646,00.html "I wouldn't blame Thierry Henry for what went on." "I wouldn't go down the road of (calling it) cheating" Eh what? He cheated. On purpose. He is to blame. The officials might've had a shocker, but they didn't do the cheating.
  21. Not wanting to be too holier than thou, but it's dangerous to start treating supporters and nations as a whole. Did 'the home nations' care? Did 'the home nations' offer sympathy? I expect some people from those nations did and some didn't. It's probably best to make up your own mind, and it's usually best to be nice regardless of what other people do (or you think they would do). So there. Having said that, Henry is a cheating ****.
  22. It's just a soap opera with fighting. If Sky stopped clogging up their Sports schedules with it people would be less offended imo.
  23. Recently... Public Enemies - Very watchable cops and robbers and a return to some kind of form by Michael Mann, although I couldn't help thinking it was a bit of a retread of Heat Drag Me To Hell - Do you know what? I remember classic Raimi horror-chuckles, and I'm sure that I enjoyed it. But a week later I buggered if I can remember what it was about... Mongol - Russian epic telling of the early years and rise of Genghis Khan. Beautifully shot (think the colour themed landscapes of Hero) and great action sequences. All the pivotal moments in his life seem to have happened in convenient batches, around the same campfire. Last King Of Scotland - Bit late coming to this one, but really really good. Forest Whitaker is gobsmacking as Idi Amin. Amazing soundtrack too. The Time Machine - Recent-ish version with Guy Pearce. Guff. Iris - Iris Murdoch biopic, adapted from her husband's memoirs of her descent into Altzheimer's. Very much more about him and his insecurities, than about her (which I'm sure was the intention). I've read loads of her books and know something of the potency of her thinking, but I think for the lay-person it would be difficult to tell exactly what was great about a woman who was sarcastic at parties and slept around a lot.
  24. I meant as opposed to being about a willy. You've made me explain my own joke. It wasn't even a good joke to start with. And I've read Moby D1ck. Like I said. (Just read Accordion Crimes, by Annie Proulx. Loosly linked collection of short stories about the immigrant experience of 20th century America. Strongly remeniscent of vintage Steinbeck, which is fine by me. Made me want to take up the accordion. Now reading Possession, by A.S. Byatt, which is about as literary a novel as you could hope to find, while also being extremely gripping, like a really hearty brain-wanq)
  25. Welcome back! Somehow I'm top of the league! Miles off the pace a few weeks back but now top on goal difference. Two crucial matches to come and then we'll see how things really stand.
