Saints vs Chelsea Match & Reactions Thread
SaltashSaint replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
The crap thing is that both Ba and Ivanovic were offside in the build up to Chelsea's first and and third goals. Please, please change the rule back to the 'old days' when you were offside straightaway!! -

Let's stick Rickie on and at least give it a go for the last half an hour! -
It was a shocking mistake, but it should be pointed out that is was a crap attempt at a needless tackle by Clyne that led to the goal. Adkins had all summer to sign a decent keeper and he failed to do so. So, until the January transfer window, we will just have to get back behind the lad because no matter what happens, he is still a better all round keeper than either Davis or Boruc.
-
What with our shocking defending so far this season and our obvious lack of Premier League experience, does anyone else feel that Silvestre would be a good addition to our squad. He is a free agent and, in my opinion, he could come straight in and improve us at the back.

The basic rule of football when you are playing a team which is better than you is to try and keep the ball, thus denying them the chance to score and increasing your chances of creating something. We are by far inferior to the majority of sides in this division and the only way we are going to give ourselves the opportunity of picking up points is to play 4-5-1 with a 'real' defensive midfielder protecting what is a shambles of a defence. We have hardly touched the ball against Spurs and although I never expected to get anything from the game, I did expect us to put up a fight. It is a real sad state of affairs at the moment.

I boq to your superior knowledge of our transfer dealings. However, were all the other inept summer signings made by Nigel or are they not his fault too? Is it someone's else's decision to not play Lambert and to change the keeper for an unfit one? The fact is, as a manager, you have to take the flak as well as the credit. Nigel has been great, but he is out of his depth. It is his squad of players and his tactics.
-
The fact is Nigel decided it was more important to spend £12 million on a midfielder when our defence was the one area where we needed reinforcing. We are two good centre backs short and that has shown in every game this season.

Included is the home shirt from 1999-2001, the third shirt from 2003-2005, home shirt from 2001-2003, authentic (and unwashed) 2004 shirt worn by Yoann Folly in Danny Wallace's testimonial match, and home shirt from 1995-1997 signed by a number of players including Matt Le Tissier, Francis Benali and Jason Dodd. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180893937332

I jumped in the car with my five-year-old daughter and drove for three hours before I got back home to Cornwall and ran around my house like a mad thing. I still can't believe we did it!
-
It was a crap piece of defending, but no-one on Sky mentioned the fact that Jutiewicz (can't be arsed to check the spelling) had his left hand grabbing Jose's shirt. Bizarrely, players get away with more shirt pulling in the Premiership than in the Championship, so when we get there (and we will) the type of foul given today probably won't be next season. Jose is still quality in my opinion.

Is anyone travelling up to the game from the Devon and Cornwall area? I live in Saltash, Cornwall, and while I would love to be there I don't fancy a near 800-mile round trip on my own! Maybe a car/petrol costs share?
-
The fact is that for all the pretty football we play we do not (Lambert aside) possess any real attacking threat. Possession does not win football matches, goals do. Tonight was the perfect example of that. Crap concentration, poor marking, individual errors and woeful finishing cost us big style. We must win at Peterborough on Tuesday and to do that we have to improve all round as a team. We must not blow it now (please!).
-
He is consistently pushed off the ball and lacks the ability to compete aerially let alone win a header. Needs to put himself about a lot more.
-
Billy Sharp is not fast enough or strong enough, while Chaplow is having a mare - time for De Ridder.
-
That was a good point (which could yet prove to be key come the end of the season) in tough conditions (which certainly didn't suit our passing style of play) against an in-form side who have a good home record. Superb performance from Martin - he is getting better every game - and Punch is looking really sharp and keen to impress. Why, however, did Rickie not take a shot at goal with that late free-kick? Bizarre! Oh well, onwards and upwards....
-
Very disappointing tonight, but any side in this division missing their best three players will struggle. The fact is we still need a decent right winger and we need another striker who can score goals and put himself about a bit (a la Rickie). That has been obvious since the first day of the season and it still is over halfway through.

We needed a 'proper' right winger at the start of the season, we have needed one throughout the season and we really need one now. We also require another striker - particularly now Lambert is facing a three-match ban. There is a serious chance that we will waste our great start to the season and that we may even fail to make the play-offs unless we add two, if not three, new faces in the next couple of weeks. It is one heck of a long season and we need some fresh impetus asap.
-
It was blatantly obvious before the start of the season that we lacked pace up front and it remains blatantly obvious now. Lambert wins so many headers, yet we fail to profit from a large percentage of them because we have no-one with the speed to get on the end of them. De Ridder is not yet ready and Guly, Connolly and Barnard aren't the answer. We have a huge chance this season to go up, but I fear we will blow the opportunity unless we buy a pacey striker and a 'proper' right winger. As for today, I will take a point against a side who played so defensive at home it was embarassing. I would hate to have to watch that crap every week! Of course it is disappointing not to hold on for the win, but every point in this league is crucial and it takes us clear at the top again.

Many thanks Moscow Saint.

Hi all. Does anyone know who replaced David Luker as head of supporter services? Any help would be much appreciated.

I will be there (with the good lady wife and the three kids). We are travelling up from Cornwall and looking forward to it!

Happy to help Ant!! I began supporting Saints when, at the age of 8, I won a colouring competition which was run by the football team I was playing for (Alton United). My manager was a Saints fan and the prize was for him to take the winner to a Saints game. Supported them ever since and although I live in Cornwall now, I try and get up to St Mary's as often as I can.

More news tonight...maybe...perhaps

I normally wouldn't get that excited, but the build up by Mr Sibley points to something of some note (I hope!).
