Perhaps I misunderstood what you were getting at. I thought you were suggesting that we needed further legislation when in fact the laws we have are sufficient to deal with the issue.

The legal sanctions currently exist, if you smack a child hard enough to leave a mark, you've broken the law. As I said earlier the law is sufficient to deal with those parents who cannot distinguish between discipline and assault, without criminalising the majority of sensible, caring, loving parents

Agreed, but you won't see a track and field athlete enter 8 events or more (decathlon doesn't count before MLG pipes up). I not belittling the acheivement - it is amazing. There must be something about the physical demands of swimming which facilitates quicker recovery.

Swimming is a sport that facilitates multimedal winning. There have been a number of occasions in these games where swimmers, having competed in one race, are back in the pool 50 minutes later winning a gold medal. I can't think of many sports where that would be possible. IMO phelps haul at Bejing ( 8 ) was no more impressive than Bolt (3). Redgrave has to up there having won 5 endurance golds in one of the toughest sports as should the chap who is representing Canada for the 10th time

In the case of disciplining a child any smack hard enough to mark the child is illegal. As to abuse, a one off smack that leave a mark feels more like an assault whereas a regular occurance of smacks / hits / punches that leave marks is abuse IMO.

Doesnt uk law already legislate against this. The parameters of discipline were defined in the childrens act. Just because some parents are too stupid to know the difference, why should we criminalise all the other parents who do.

She probably was, like me, fed up of waiting for the sodding torch to turn up. I am glad she kept her bit short as possible- imagine the whinging if she had cr4pped on for half an hour. Plus as you say she is 86. Most 86 year olds are tucked up in bed by 9pm with their horlicks.

We are not choking - just look at the GB men gymnasts. What we are doing is performing to our best and not acheiving the ridiculous levels of expectation that our media have arrogantly suggested we can acheive. Daly was a medal hope - hope being the key word. The Chinese fellows were the red hot favourites and duely delivered. There have been loads of PBs which is all you can ask of an athletes at the Olympics.
