Some random recollections to put this in context: I remember when we were all astonished when Saints first splashed out to join the 'big time' , spending £275,000 on Peter Osgood. That was the sort of money we never thought Saints would spend on a single player (1974). We later spent £400,000 on Charlie George in 1979, £440,000 on KK (1980) before breaking the half million mark on David Armstrong (1981). Alan McLoughlin was our first (disastrous) £1m player . But if we want a parrallel with Jay R at c£6m , remember that when we were first promoted in to the old First Division in 1966 Ted Bates spent - what I believe was a club record at the time - £60,000 on a player who had never played in the top flight before, Ron Davies. If JR is half as good as Big Ron, it will be money well spent.

Who knows ? Trippier was quoted earlier in the summer as happy at Burnley, not looking to move etc. But with some former team mates here to whisper, tweet, text etc ? Having said that I doubt Burnley will be keen to lose another player, especially to us. Bet 'loyal Eddie' regrets "turning us down" now though.
