They get 'allowances' and a time-spent rebate. In some circumstances a leader of the council (councillor) will work full time on council business and will be paid a commensurate amount that he/she could earn in other work. The 'pay' goes through pay-roll, is taxed and NI taken out. So saying it is not actually pay is, well, pedantic!

Got to say, with inflation running at 5% + (in reality, not some massaged government measure) I would be well p!ssed off too if I was told my pay was going to be cut by 5%. I bet the councilors and senior managers aren't getting a pay cut.

Clegg and the lib-dems are turncoats. They promised no tuition fee rises and then promptly voted with the tories. Whether or not you think the policy is right - I happen to believe that it is - there is no getting around that they promised one thing and then did the exact opposite. They are unfit for office.

No, that is not why I have a problem with them. It is that they have used the media to their advantage in a way that pikey chavs never could. If some fat chain-smoking benefit-claiming single mother pikey with greasy hair had left their baby at home while they went down the pub the country's media would have turned on her. She would have been singled out by the Mail and Express and Sun as a 'not fit to be a mother'. Child services would be called in and politicians would be falling over themselves to get in front of the cameras to say that 'something should be done' about it and 'how shocking blah blah blah.

Nothing fairer about some people having effectively more than one vote and an undue influence on the result. FPTP is one man one vote. (And unfortunately these days one woman one vote.)
