Anyone read the article? A short synoposis for those who didnt Apparently he confirmed that he personally paid up last years May outstandings of £500k to allow Pinnacle bid to proceed. The Administrator asked him to do so as the financial situation was critical. Because of this Crouch & MLT didn't have time to undertake normal due diligence and subsequently felt very let down by the Pinnacle mob. He welcomes Markus's involvement but missed most of last season as he wanted to reflect on the past. Went to Wembley and will be back in his Box next season re-invigorated

I was stood in the lower Chocolate Box when Dave Webb passed the ball up the line to Martin Chivers who ran from just inside the Charlton half to cross for Painey to sweep home Webby's pass went over the line so we should have lost the extra point for the win. However luck was on our side and we won our last home game of the season and got a win and 2 draws from the three remaining away games to gain our first ever promotion to the top Level

Also some suggestion that workers at St Marys ill no longer get free parking. Will have to come out of their wages, on match days at least
-
I sat next to Norman Dean at a do recently. Tony Godfrey was also at our table (a 5'8'' ex Saints keeper)
-
He also had some 'interesting' games against the Pompey LB by the name of Roy Lunnis who was, at the time, a monster at well over 6 foot. Painey was far too skilful for him. Also remember a Christmas game v Bolton. Their left back was Sid Farrimond. Him and Painey had been having a right go from the off. Painey got a sly dig at him and Farrimond retaliated by throwing a handful of mud at Painey. Farrimond got sent off (a most unusual event in those days) and Saints went on to win (5-1 I think) The only LB that ever got the better of Painey was Ray Wilson originally at Huddersfield then Everton. Wilson was in the 1966 World Cup squad. Painey also had a Greengrocers for a while in Shirley and was a local Councillor

Terry Paine once scored a hat trick for England v N Ireland (won 8-3) V tricky and skilful player (with a bit of a nasty streak) and not liked much by fellow Saints players He had a deputy by the name of Dave Chadwick who wasnt a bad player but couldnt dislodge Painey or John Sydenham on either wing
-
Can we help our neighbours by gifting then Pulis, Forecast etc. Notice none of the Soton based businesses, including SFC, disputed the CVA whereas at least one Pompey based company did
-
TBF The 'Modern Era' thing is subjective but based on the fact that there are unlikely to be too many fans of either side who are alive and supporting their respective teams for + 50 years
-
Well I would really but... Sir Wayne Rooney!! Sir Ashley Cole!! Sir Emil Heskey!! Sir John Terry!!
-
To be fair to Pompey they have a total of 2 cup wins and 2 League wins against our 1 FA Cup win. However in the last 50 yrs (covering the 'modern era') silverware has been the same ie 1 FA Cup In that time Saints have recorded a higher av attendance for 46 of the 50 yrs Av seasons with attendances above av 20,000 - Saints 19 Pompey 3 Av seasons with attendance below 10,000 - Saints Nil Pompey 8 higher league Pos Saints 44 years Pompey 6 Can go on but Pompey were the best supported/more trophies from 1920 to 1960 then the pendulum swung west....

It is not only the 'real' fans but the corporate side too. Now many will say why bother with them but businesses filling the corporate boxes and hospitality rooms bring in decent revenue and Rupes and his gang did well on this side albeit with Prem games to sell. Last season Andy Oldknow set up a meet prior to the Bristol Rovs game for NC to explain how important it was for SFC to work with local businesses. NC never turned up and since then seems to have alienated a number of loyal local businesses which is a shame as they all want to support him and the club generally

Too lazy to look up Must be a few years now

Understand that Terry the builder is putting up a substantial extension to Storrie-Tellers pad at Hayling Island I suppose he can set off the loss at PFC against the revenue from this deal!!

I am an 'old timer'. Passed 11+, went to a Grammar School Wore a blazer and cap to school (had to doff to the Masters wives if we ever saw them) called the Masters 'Sir' and they called you by your surname. Much more discipline and respect those days. That said, I believe kids are equally as intelligent these days and are given the opportunity to question and debate we our generation didn't get until University. Our generation read books and learnt a lot by rote and progressed on the back of exam results Today's generation is much more 'saavy' and spend far more time on electronic gadgets in line with technological progress. Perhaps more store should be placed on traditional values. To be honest I struggle with some of my kids Maths but am amazed how few of their generation know events of History or where certain places are in the world Out of 8 'Grade A' students only one knew where Buenos Aires is. One thought Argentina was in Africa!!

Is it too soon to establish if sales have been affected by the lack of an instalment plan and the diversion of the World Cup? Normally I would pay for mine on receipt of a renewal reminder. As none arrived this year I could have easily forgotten but fortunately one of my mates renewed for me (I did the same for him last year!!) I guess if the club does make some more good signings then interest may increase but can't see us selling more than last year. Very happy to be proved wrong though

It is difficult to remember precisely but 1966 was a gentler age (altho football violence came to the Dell for the first time at the start of the 1966/7 season when Chelsea came down during our first season in Div1) TV was all Black & White those days with just 2 (or possibly 3) channels. Players wages were modest (think the England players got £1,000 each for winning the World Cup) and supporters tended to make their own favours so replica shirts etc weren't in evidence. There wasn't the desire to win at all costs and altho there was a general rejoicing about the England win I don't remember too much about street parties and the like. Certainly the euphoria locally when Saints won the Cup in 76 seemed at a far higher level. One other thing I used to enjoy at the time was the trip to Wembley every 2 yrs to watch Engla v Scotland.
-
Feel v old admitting to this but I was in the crowd for the 66 World Cup Final. Also saw France v Uruguay in the Group Stage game at the old White City Stadium. Any one else actually at Wembley for the England triumph? My Dad and I went to the Royal Lancaster Hotel after the game to see the England team and waved to Terry Paine. All fairly relaxed compared to reaction these days. Also saw Saints Semi Finals v Man Utd in 1963 plus Everton, Liverpool & Watford plus Wembley games v Man Utd, Liverpool N Forest (x2) & Carlisle + Arsenal @ Cardiff + a number of European Games. I have been quite blessed football wise especially as I started out watching Saints in front of sparse crowds at the Dell in the old Div 3 S. Really hope the youngsters out there have the enjoyment I have had from following the Saints (and England)

Yes indeedy. Tongue very firmly in cheek!!
-
Think both of them will be behind a revived Molyneux for the LB spot!! Antony Pulis is being prepared for the RB position!!!
-
Just as a comparison £680 online price for a seat on the Kop, £735 'at window' whatever that means. Prices up 7% over last year Compare players wages up 17% with Liverpool having 3rd highest wage bill in the country. Surely the cost of football and the ridiculous players wages can't continue?
-
Just a thought, if you dont follow this forum, dont read the Echo etc, how do fans know about Season Ticket renewals. I thought every one received a letter inviting them to renew
-
It used to be £33k per season in the Prem and, as far as I believe, there has not been much variation since then on the basis that there are more games. I know one of the current Box holders and I am sure he said he were paying approx £30k for the season. Probably that's why there is a very limited uptake. One thing you can say about old Rosy Cheeks, when my company had a box in the early days of St Marys Rupes always used to pop in to say hello (and possibly check the catering was up to standard!!!)
-
Anyone heard the LP track he recorded celebrating our Cup Final win of 1976? Appreciate non of this makes any sense to those of you of a young persuasion
-
I think you will also find that in the past 50 yrs, Pompey have only had a bigger average attendance higher than ours in 3 seasons, that despite having a larger capacity ground until we moved to St Marys

The Old Thatched is, I think being turned into a Dentists, or something similar. Across the road the Blacksmiths(aka Ringside) has been closed for a while. Fair sized plot so no doubt ripe for development. Perhaps we should start a 'Pub Closed' thread. There seems to be a growing list as evidenced by the number along Shirley High St for example. Apparently in the 1850's there was, on average, a drinking establishment for every 175 people resident in the City!!
