At no point did I say journalists can say whatever they want - your apology is graciously accepted (despite your somwhat 'willy waving' I'm a journalist approach -these things happen in the internet) As for Stelling's professionalism, I will say again that I wager 70% plus of the watching audience agree with his stance. Whether his stance is right or wrong, he was clearly stating an opinion and one shared by a large audience watching that very programme. I do not question the professionalism of Rod Little or Richard Littlejohn while I find their views most often morally repugnant. While I disapprove of what you say, I will defend to the death your right to say it - Voltaire....
-
So to be fair, what did I get wrong? Did Stelling break the law? Was he unprofessional? Did I not say that Stelling "is allowed to comment in whatever opinion he chooses" - did I say he can say whatever he likes whether it's true or not? Did I say he is immune from libel and defamation laws? No.
-
Presumably - not that I know anything about the law - a journalist can express 'fair comment and criticism' as per this American example of defence aganist libel... Fair Comment & Criticism This defense covers expressions of opinion, everything from movie reviews to columns on the op-ed page. The fair comment and criticism defense allows reporters to express opinions no matter how scathing or critical. Examples might include a rock critic ripping into the latest Britney Spears CD, or a political columnist writing that she believes President Bush is doing a horrible job.
-
Then how is it possible that Littlejohn, Little and a myriad other journalists can write opinion pieces ranging from support for bringing back the death penalty to, frankly, the most right wing propoganda one could hope to avoid? How can Paul Merson call for Arsene Wenger to be sacked while in his role as media pundit?? Explain? And are we really suggesting that a sports presenter is subject to the same rules and expectations (irrespective of the law) as a political commentator??
-
Agreed. It doesn't matter. And it doesn't seem to affect our results. So why are people calling for the best sports-presenter on television to be 'disciplined'? Mental.

Because he couldn't hit a cow's arse with a barn door? -
My friend, I take it you have never read a newspaper in this country? The Times, Telegraph, Guardian... They all run 'Opinion' - it is exactly that. Do you think the general publice are so stupid that they might have needed a warning that Stelling's thoughts are his opinion in this case?? It seems to me that anyone who questions Cortese is now rendered as having a completely invalidated opinion. How many people on this forum have TURNED against Jeff Stelling because he has a different opinion to theirs on this one issue? It's totally f u c king bonkers. And genuinely, this is how dictators achieve power and stay there. If you were to canvas football fans today and ask them who was 'right', my gut tells me that well over 75% would side with Le Tiss. Does it matter? No. But Stelling is speaking for HIS viewers voicing his opinion. And most of them will agree with him. It's only lunatics on here who think he is some satanic force at work... Mad. Totally bloody mad.
-
With all due respect to Stelling, it was not remotely unprofessional. The guy is a journalist and is allowed to comment in whatever opinion he chooses. Are you suggesting that from now in he should merely announce that a goal has been scored? That he should show no preference for Hartlepool? That he should not speak up for whatever he believes is a right and wrong in football? Jesus wept, this is not people reporting on deaths in Libya - this is people talking about football. Some people need to get a bloody grip. "Jeff that was a ridiculous goal, I've said over and over that Wenger needs a new goalkeeper..." "Charlie in the interests of balance I have to remind you that Arsene Wenger makes the decisions at Arsenal and it's not our role to question him, his players, the Chairman or the fans..." Rolls eyes.

Do the club still employ a PR company to post on messageboards?

Can I be honest. I have a real problem with a Chairman who has a girl's name. -
I agree with a great deal of what you say here. All that Stelling was doing (in his defence) was sticking up for a mate after (rightly or wrongly) thinking that he had been bad-mouthed in the press and accused of being after freebies. Stelling is a journalist - and journalists are entitled to opinions. This is the relevant part of the interview: He said: "Yes, Lawrie McMenemy and Matt Le Tissier have criticised me but they should know no one is more important than the club. "I simply couldn't accept all these people trying to get freebies here, freebies there. "Listen, if I pay for my season ticket then I expect everyone to pay for their ticket too. "And I'm not interested in being popular, I'm focused on making this club successful." Jeff Stelling knows a great deal about football and a great number of football people - the vast majority of whom have the utmost respect for him and also for Matt. He felt something strongly and chose to speak out about it. He's broken no laws I know of. He has no requirement to be independent.

Unfortunately, until we are regularly top six in the Premiership this is going to happen.

Cortese kisses and makes up with the Sun
Legod Third Coming replied to Golac's Iron Gonads's topic in The Saints
Now imagine the scenario in which Cortese and/or the Liebherrs walk away and the club is looknig for finance and those 'hangers on' once again try to do their best for the club they clearly love... I would love to live in black and white. To describe Matt Le Tissier as a hanger on is rather sad and reflects as poorly on you as anyone else who has no appreciation for loyalty and history. -

Bizarre isn't it because he's one of the few guys with experience at this level. Wonder what's going on? Was poor defending for the goal -

Had this debate with my daughter - she wants to be an astro-physicist. The time differential is a bit irrelevant. The point is that if the result is accurate, the whole special theory of relativity will have to be rewritten. It also makes all radioactive dating inaccurate. Which means the world may not be as old or older than we think... I love it. It's bloody fascinating. Wish I understood it more!!! -
Why don't people get that 99% of fans: 1. Support Cortese. 2. Adore MLT. 3. Are grateful to LM for the best years of football this club enjoyed. And would simply like to see them sort out this nonsense?

I travel with Eurostar regularly and so far they have sent me three bottles of Veuve Clicquot and a ticket for the weekend to Paris. So loyalty does exist... -

So it was a good result? And when we lose at home to Watford in a fortnight that's inevitable. Got it. Thank you Stephen Hawking.
