might have been a different outcome in the Ashes series without some technical help.....

Disappointing from You Whitey.....does that mean that you don't care if it's a fair result, or not ?
-
but surely VAR would have a say if this move ended in a goal?
-
...Oh ....you mean like when he was with Saints for all those years? He consistently logged more mileage than any other Prem. player and * missed only 2 games in the last 3 seasons. NOTE: * for suspension after red card - and not injury.
-
Sadly...not the first time this has happened. You buy a player and then end up playing him out of position. When Rickie Lambert was on top form and we got Prem. promotion in 2012 , we bought Jay Rodriguez, ands because RL was " the main man ", Jay spent half the first season playing on left wing almost anonymous. Later we changed formation and paired them up and for a while they were the best strike force since Boyer and MacDougall. Adam Armstrong scored 30 goals, before coming to us, and in a similar situation scored almost no goals.. Ings had left and Che Adams became the sole striker and left AA stranded on the left side. If you want to see what Adam Armstrong can achieve there's a good sequence of his goals coring days on You Tube. Perhaps if Che does finally leave..?... AA may come into his own.

In replying to you (Keith) ...I might also be going out to the two dozen other people who shared similar opinions to you on some other posts here. Yes we were "makeshift", and it was just one of 46 fixtures (43 left now) and we were fortunate to get all three points when a draw looked an obvious result. If Che Adams does move (good financially for the club) we don't have any obvious replacement who can steal a goal out of nothing. Likewise with Tella. Despite the 61% possession I felt we lacked a lot especially in midfield . Perhaps I was a trifle unclear in my comments on SHEA Charles, I know and we can't expect miracles from a teenager - even if he does cost us 15 million. After watching JWP roam everywhere around pitches for the last 100 games, there were obvious gaps at many times and like others, I am somewhat unaccustomed to seeing a number 24 in the midst of things. Youthful enthusiasm is one thing, but surely the average schoolboy (playing without VAR) knows that a deliberate handball is unlawful and worthy of a yellow card in any game. If I could see a re-run of the game I might revise my thoughts and if Charles was M.o.M. then TBH... I don't think there were too many other candidates. My M.o.M ....was referee David Webb (no, not that one) ....who had the courage to book the Plymouth striker for diving when Bazunu never even touched him. A vile practice that (even with VAR) would quickly disappear if the punishment was a red card... and not JUST yellow. As for the other occasions you mentioned. I was at Fratton Park when Steve Williams made his modest debut in 1976, and also saw Graham Baker's " TV Goal " (whilst some latecomers were still getting into the Dell), although I wasn't at Goodison Park, I always felt the club did itself a great dis-service by not offering Matt Oakley a better contract because (at the time) he was a very versatile player that we could ill afford to lose.

a 2-1 win away from home with our "new look " side-what is there to complain about ? Well let's not say " complain " but a few observations at least. We did make hard work of it, and the thought that... IF we do sell Tella and/or Adams .... where will the goals come from? Our only real big money purchase... Sean Charles ...was distinctly underwhelming, of course he will (hopefully) improve, but not on this showing. Good job we had Stuart Armstrong in the start side, he held a lot together. More discipline is needed ..already 15 yellow cards in the first 3 games, which will likely cause problems when they all total up in a month or so. Makes you wonder where the pace is coming from if KWP goes too?. Manning showed some good work, but is easily beaten for pace. There are still 12 days before the window closes but expect a lot more signings before then, as the bench looked well short of real experience.
-
....and they don't get a lifetime's job - just a short career and 3 year contract, and when that money runs out they end up driving a taxi, or working on a building site. We may recall that Pelle (at his best) went to China for 300K / week, which was probably the same as the entire Saints squad salaries at the time. If they get a chance... then good luck to them, the rest of their lives may be pretty routine and boring after wards in comparison.

No offence taken Coalman, but in recruiting many young ( if talented ) youngsters, we lay ourselves open when coming up against the Watford's and Millwall's of this league who only seem to recruit 6 '4" rugby players with size 11 boots. Some of our young talents have only played U21 football - in albeit good sides - but have rarely come up against the reality of " men's football " in the lower leagues, where there is no VAR and somewhat dubious refereeing standards. I don't see Lyanco as a long term solution, but he knows his way around and maybe will serve better as ...." a minder rather than a mentor" to the " new youngbloods " until they can find their feet in this very competitive league populated by quite a number of " former Prem. clubs " all desperate to get back up to the top tier. Every side needs a " hard man " and how I wish we had another Jimmy Case on the books.
-
Ah.....you mean like one of those Premier League CBs who knows everything about positioning, how to head a ball properly and doesn't make reckless tackles. Any names come to mind?,...... some of the Prem. clubs are trying to dump players who still can't do that, and it cost them a lot of money to find out the truth. Saints have had a whole string of those (starting with Hoedt) ..who had all those same faults, thankfully we got rid of another one quite recently. What about that McGuire fellow(?). Man United are desperate to get rid of him, and he's got such a good reputation with the England manager, too.
-
....Lyanco may well be going, but I for one would be disappointed to see him leave.. OK - He wasn't upto Prem. standard, but showed great enthusiasm and those people he tackled - stayed tackled - and without any red cards. Romeu would have been proud of him. In 25 games last season he got and just 5 yellows, and put the frighteners on a lot of opposition defenders. " I don't know what they do to the enemy, but they frighten the life out of me " ....... ..........a quote from the Duke of Wellington before Waterloo.... when inspecting a regiment of his Prussian mercenaries.

Whilst I agree that many players seemingly " have " to write some sort of "departure note" ; I don't believe that it's the case here. I don't see a lot of b*ll shit in what Prowsey wrote - do you? I think he expressed himself very well in his comments. Certainly those fans who have praised his service to the club on this site (and others) seemed to think so. He's given 20 years of his life to Saints and he's worthy of a better class of football than playing on with us in the Championship. Whilst he has a career left... he deserves the best level of football that a club in this country can offer, and who knows.. in other circumstances, he may even find his way back into an England squad in the future.
-
....but you have to admit that he is more than " just a professional footballer " to Saints fans. He was the role model for his generation, and won't be easy to replace in the short term - no matter who we sign. His career is / was unique in length of service to the club, as is his fitness / playing record.. missed only two games in the last 3 seasons . and they were because of a somewhat dubious red card decision, and not to mention goals / assist stats. which is v. good for a " non-striker ". As you say ...he's gone" and in time we will get over it, but there is nothing wrong with paying respects to a loyal club servant. I wish him well.
-
Wow !..this is could be the best window in the club's history, and this would be the icing on the cake.

Romeo Lavia - Official: Signs for Not Liverpool
david in sweden replied to Saint Garrett's topic in The Saints
...with both sets of fans (Chelsea and Liverpool) playing the ...will he / won't he? ...game about Lavia, it will be interesting to know if Romeo will take himself along to Stamford Bridge this afternoon... to watch both teams ?.... or quietly sit somewhere and watch the game on TV....? I'm sure some keen-eyed journo' will find out the answer..... -
Exactly .. for years we moaned because we could watch SKY (or whoever's) replays and see correct decisions even if referees were 20 yards behind the play and / or misjudged situations, or even those cases when the linesman got it wrong. Looking at the potential benefits of promotion to the Prem... isn't it time to play fair and have compulsory VAR in Championship matches, too?.... It's not a " cheap league " to be playing in and every club deserves to know they are getting fair and correct decisions. Imagine ...... losing out on promotion because of one wrong offside decision. The prospect is frightening.

Saints v. Norwich takes me back to my childhood days in the 1960's when we both played in the old Division 2, and had similar sort of games. (After a few seasons, Ted Bates decided to buy the Canaries CF ....a Welshman named Ron Davies.....and the rest was history). Yesterday''s positives are obvious .. 69% possession and 31 shots, but we should have converted more and defensively we were a shambles at times. A few good performances in there, but it may take time to find out how much we miss JWP, now that he's gone. ...(sounds weird saying that ) but at least we've found someone else who can take a good penalty. Another " golden oldie " fixture next week at Plymouth, back in the day ...we bought one of their old CF, too.. George Kirby ! a one-man battering ram and we beat them on the way to our first promotion ....in 1966. It will take a few weeks before we see the semblance of a new start team, and we will be looking for those names who are still here from last season. A great game of football on the day and not such a bad start to the season , but I don't know how many more 4-4 home games we can stand?.....
-
At least we didn't lose three points on Tuesday night, but it gave RM an opportunity to evaluate his " B team / bench squad " and access their capabilities. A lot of has already been written (above) about various individual performances.... those who surprised, and others who (sadly) disappointed. I expect to see a few of them being farmed out on loan, or even sold before the end of the month.
-
and so finally .... Jack's the Lad. The last survivor of " Prowsey's generation " which also included; Shaw, Targett, Reed, Chambers, and McQueen amongst others. Those who criticised JWP for not shouting at his team mates will be in for a treat, as Jack has never been last in the queue to express an opinion. To be fair, he had a baptism of fire after Saints prematurely sold Jose Fonte, only for VvD to be badly injured only weeks afterwards, and Jack was drafted in alongside Maya Yoshida.... (who was the only other experienced CB at the time) ...but he DAJFU for a while, but took some unfair criticism for faults that were not always his. Now at last, he has the chance to prove himself in the key role in the team. Never a stranger to a referee's yellow card, he always showed courage and determination that some others around him sadly lacked. I ...for one ...will say Good Luck ... Captain Jack !
-
... and end up with Aces and Eights ...
-
see above.. I agree with that sentiment ..to some degree, but the transfers so far have been somewhat different situations. Most of us would probably agree that Prowsey deserves to continue playing Premier League, and I'm surprised that more clubs weren't bidding for him, and some of them may regret that decision if JWP continues to score /create goals for WHam as he has done for us. Both Livramento and Lavia showed up and shone well in Saints teams that were below par - and in the end - clearly not good enough for the Prem. The club's promise to them was (likely) Prem. football but now that has gone, and ..tbh. I'm amazed that we´re getting those sort of the fees for them. If they stayed they would flounder in the morass in the Championship and any further injuries would end all interest .. and high value in them. Good luck to them if they meet the standard that the Prem. demands .. and in the end we still got very good deals for a low level of investment. As for the rest, it will be a combination of those players who are clearly " surplus to requirements ", and those who quite simply ...don't want to stay. Whatever we get for them will be some sort of a bonus.. especially for players who have just one year left on their contracts. Those juvenile Academy graduates on the up who have already had minutes, will be anxious to get more game time and establish themselves and will hopefully become the next generation of Lavia's and Livramento's. If they / we succeed then we have a win-win situation, as those who stay will benefit Saints in the future, whilst those who choose to move on to " bigger things " .. will command 40-50 million fees as a matter of course.
-
well said S- Clarke. I hope Prowsey's deal is a good one for him personally. He has given the best part of his footballing career to Saints - with little success to show for it. Continually ignored by Gareth Southgate, where his free-kick /penalty taking abilities might have made the difference in tournaments , and his place in the squad was given others who never got to take off their tracksuits - and quickly disappeared from the national squad afterwards. He is not too old to regain some respect from England where his long experience has been ignored and replaced by lesser "media favourites" who might benefit from watching his You Tube masterclasses on free kicks, and any set of given "circumstances" his time may well come again. His continued presence as a Prem. level player may well be some sort of revenge by scoring against those other Prem. clubs who have so blatantly ignored him whilst squandering multi millions on foreign imports who are obvious, over-rated square pegs. At the moment - we have no suitable replacement, and no-one even close to his sort of team contribution but in time maybe a Downes (or a Smallbone) may become a worthy successor but that challenge may not be so hard - given the difference between top-end Championship sides and the Premier League's drop zone. If we get back up, it may well be at the expense of a Luton, or even a Burnley side who will look so clearly out of place in the Premier League.

not playing JWP and the other " new regulars" is a safety measure. No-one wants to get crocked playing against a League Two side?
-
Looks like they put all the names into a hat.. and the tea lady picked out the first eleven names and the remainder were condemned to the bench.
