Whilst it looks like a gift for the teams with big / expensive squads, Saints may also benefit now that we have some new faces. If I'm right (?) ...the new " teenage signings " won't necessarily be included in the " Prem. 23 " stats and so we will have even more options. Clearly key players who have to play 95 mins - and take a few bad tackles - may not be forced to stay on the field for the entire game if we can make a like-for-like substitution. Fitness maybe maintained if they can be " rested " after a strenuous 60-70 minutes instead of dragging out the entire match time. Both Livramento and Broja suffered injuries after 4-5 months of intensive Prem. action they weren't previously used to. Many times we have seen teams forced to make major tactical changes because one player comes off. This will also give fringe players a better chance to " get minutes" they wouldn't normally have (when we are limited to 3 subs.) and increase their match experience, when managers are forced to choose who they can / can't substitute because of the limitation of only 3 changes.

Yes of course.....and wasn't Alex Ferguson lucky to get all those youngsters out of the MU Academy all at one time and win all those Cups and titles....
-
..........and who we have who might be interested in a move back to their homeland ?
-
Forget that. It will never happen. If we managed to sign Kevin Keegan without anyone knowing about it, most of our signing could walk though the Bargate unnoticed.

....it was a poorly-misjudged tackle ...on a very wet pitch. The ref. on the day (Dean?) didn't find fault with it, but play was called back by the VAR ref. The tackle was made to look even worse by the player (Perez?), rolling on the ground in " agony ", but it didn't stop him scoring a couple of goals later in the game.

Agreed, but there wasn't a lot of money involved on that occasion and indeed Chaplow was an excellent signing. The original issue on this post was the thought / or / fear of another record breaking " Carrillo" type deal and ending up with another dud. I'd love to be proven wrong, but the idea of signing Harry Winks gives me really bad vibes. Spurs have taken us to the cleaners several times in the distant past, and our only " revenge " would be getting big money on a deal if KWP were to return to North London.

For value - in those days 1992 - it was a disastrous deal. We got £3 million for Shearer ( a British record at the time) and then paid out around £1 million for Dixon and Speedie.. They played around a dozen games between them and were gone by the next season and we got zilch in return. Similar situation with record sale of Martin Chivers to Spurs 1967 we got Frank Saul in part ex. which cost nearly 40% of the deal. My advice to club is never do part exchange when it involves taking one of their bench players who they don't want. KWP is the only exception I can think of. Possible warning for an eventual Winks deal.

and the corners and assists. But he is about the same age and height.
-
He still looks a better bet than the £20 million we paid for Carrillo (ouch).

Shearer, MLT and Lambert also had their fair share of penalties, and they all count in the end.

Good point. We have no loan players yet.

May have to wait until the end of the Austrian training camp for more input on this one..... -
Wasn't quite as bad as a lot of people might claim, but was always ready to play wherever the manager needed him, and actually turned out in six different shirt numbers during his first season. Essentially a left-sided defender, he wasn't afraid of getting " stuck-in " and picked up a goodly number of cards along the way. Our biggest mistake was never utilising his long-throw talents properly. After he left, he eventually joined up with James Beattie at Stoke, who revelled in his CF role and it became a nightmare for defenders when Delap's enormous throws were just as effective as any sort of centre / or / cross into the box.

.sounds like the story of our wing backs. Everyone gets excited when they bomb forward, but thinks they're sh*t when they have to get back and defend.

Keeping Shane Long for one more season might be a wise decision. He's not going to start too many games but with so many new/ young players on the way in, it might be good to have an older head around on match days.

Not according to stats. Prowsey has more Prem. apps. more goals and an England goals record on a par with Grealish. The only skill Jack G. excels in is the number of times he goes to ground in apparent pain and shouts Mummy. If JG was worth £100, then £75 mill. for Prowse would be a steal.
-
.......are Swansea fans good judges of Prem. players then ..or ?
-
He showed up well enough in the Italy game, but must have gone home happier NOT to have been put on the field for that 0-4 debacle.

I'm confused a lot of the time on here, (of course it maybe dementia), but I thought this was a football site. Oops ......time for my afternoon nap.
-
well he won't be out of place then - will he?
-
.......and one who has spent too long in the " cosy bubble " of Saints' youth football. It's a tough life in the Prem..and even EFL and tbh....I can't see him making it.
-
....'ang on ... where's me crystal ball. Cross my palm with £12 million quid...and I'll give you a guess.

We "oldies" remember (with sadness) Martin Chivers' move to Tottenham (in 1967) for a then British record £125,000 (sounded good at the time) Chivers later became " their 1960's Harry Kane ", but Saints didn't prosper from the deal, as we got ..Frank Saul (Spurs valuation was £45,000) and his goal-scoring record was abysmal. Spurs came away with a big smile on their faces. (Ted Bates later stated that the Chivers' deal was the only one he ever regretted, but the offer was too good to refuse). Fortunately, we had the young Channon coming on and he partnered well with Ron Davies in the seasons that followed. A prospective deal for JWP - with that club - shouldn't include a "swap" with any of their bench players, least of all Harry Winks.

Keeping Track of the Contracts 2024-25
david in sweden replied to Over land and sea's topic in The Saints
they probably were good at 16, but when the issue of extended contracts arises, some fall by the wayside.... and someone has to make a decision on the day .....you win some and lose some. Saints have a long historical record of releasing young talents who didn't peaked by 18... and even younger; Kevin Phillips, and Dennis Wise were released as schoolboys long back in the 1980's. Into this century. Danny Ings, Tyrone MIngs, Ben White ......I'm sure there are more to come. Rumour had it that we almost released a scrawny, under-weight teenager named Bale when he was around 14 ... (whatever happened to him ?)
