just don't visit on the day when there's another landslip.....

...He's a sort of folk hero here and it would certainly bring a few more Swedes into the fan base, and of course his career goal tally is very impressive. on the negative side: He's not getting any younger, and his critics (rightly) point out that he rarely does the business in " big match " situations. Many of the clubs at the bottom end of the French League are a very poor standard, and he also had a bit of an attitude in his younger days. That "legendary " four goal episode in the friendly v.England should be out in perspective as no-one bothered to mark him on the day, and almost half the England side in that match never played in another international match. IMO ...if we want to pay the huge salary he'll demand ?.....why not. As long as he reaches double figures and stays out of the ref's book ... OK.

One more season with Jose at the helm and make VvD vice captain and the captaincy succession is in place. -

well someone did. .maybe it was Ralph...or Katarina? -
and we'll get Lawrie Mac to sneak him in the side door at the Potters Heron, eh?

Embarrassment - do you really think so? 2016 is also the 50th anniversary of our first season in the top tier (Divisíon 1 as it used to be). .......there are a lot of older fans who really rejoiced in that achievement when it happened. ...and what about the 125th Anniversary in 2010 - was that an embarrassment, too?

Tottenham build up thread ...a question posed

Totally agree Eric......if for no other reason than Ronald Koeman can show that he is a better manager. Pochettinoi left us in the sh*t, and half the team defected which meant Ronald had to virtually start with half a team... We may not even qualify for Europe, but I really want a win on Sunday....for the fans' sake. -

Clattenburg should also be up before the "punishment panel". He chickened out because it was the home side and they were chasing the title. If all those fouls had been done by Chelsea's players.....they'd have finished the game with 8 men. Disgraceful refereeing, and the assistants were little better. -

put them in the nearest dumpster...... -
OK we can agree.... to disagree. Move on.
-
let's hope we can complete the job on Sunday.
-
Well done Leicester ! but expect the FA to take action against Spurs ........disgraceful behaviour with NINE yellow cards. Clattenburg chickened out and could easily have given 2 or 3 reds to Spurs players. Roll on Sunday, and let's make Pochettino's misery complete.

probably right. .... about 15 years since he retired.......
-
Right !.....but by then he'd played more Prem. games than Martina has ...so far. Give the guy a chance........

.......are there enough to go around ?

I do not like the word "hate", but my precise feelings about Spurs ...might send me searching my dictionary for a suitable synonym. For many (younger) fans, this is the next game against the second place club that we want to win in order to have a chance to qualify for Europa League. For many of my generation, games against Spurs have been a catalogue of defeats and despair and uncompromising insults from an arrogant fan base. I've seen Saints defeated by Liverpool, whose fans comiserated with us for trying hard, and Man Utd fans who admitted we played well, but still lost. However, the memories that comes from, what Rupert Lowe once called, ..." those North London yobbos " has stuck in my craw for generations. They have scre*ed us in nearly every transfer deal for the last 50 years, and laughed at us in their arrogance. A win next weekend will, for me, rate far above the wins against Man City, United, Liverpool and Chelsea - even if we don't qualify for Euro League. There ....RANT OVER ! -
I didn't say that (we) didn't like him, but Clyne's early performances were far from OK. He was part of the back line you mentioned, who lost the first 4 Prem. games and shipped 14 goals in the process. He didn't play well in the Wigan game (lost 0-2) and was turned inside out by the Man.Utd. strikers (we lost 2-3), and the less said about the 1-6 debacle at the Emirates the better. Kelvin Davis had poor support and took an unfair share of the blame for all those goals conceded, and in fact saved two penalties in the same period. Yes Clyne did score (actually in his fifth Prem.game) at home to Villa, ..and Yes ....he did improve as time went on, I don't deny that. The point I was trying to make was that Clyne's performances in his early games weren't anything to write home about, but (Martina) who has to date started... just 9 Prem.games also looks to be improving, when given the chance. Clyne was, of course considerably better, when he left for Liverpool, by which time he had played over 100 League and Cup games for Saints ...and capped by England. It was of course Martina, who scored in his debut game (v Arsenal) but I can understand if you are convinced that the £1 million fee was a waste of money. Perhaps you should start a thread to gain support to sell him ....and re-invest in an alternative....(as was suggested by someone about Shane Long some months ago) However, it might be tactful to wait and see if Martina wins Goal of the Season first.

I wondered why Koeman started with a " lightweight " strike force and without Pelle, Rodriguez or Austin.....but got the answer in the first half hour. Great game. The pace was frenetic and City just couldn't keep up with the speed of our attacks. Looking at the Poll, can't recall when I last saw three players vying for MoM. Can anyone really compare the £50 million paid for Raheem Sterling ....with our fairly modest fee for Sadio Mane ?
-
....and Stalin !
-
....no where near as good as Clyne was....when he left Saints. Few people seem to recall that his first few months with Saints, Clyne was totally out of his depth. It took time for Clyne to improve and he progressed well ....so the other two mentioned here should be given equal time to show their real worth.

players improve with a run of games, and after a long spell when he only replaced Cedric through injury.....Martina has now started 6 of the last 8 games, and IMHO is looking better in every game. Despite having played at a lower level (Holland) and for a country ranked over 160 in the FIFA ratings, he doesn't look entirely out of place. I don't discount Cedric either but he needs more time to adjust, whereas Martina seems to know which way we are kicking - even if he doesn't win every tackle. He may well be in the running for Goal of the Season, so I don't think anyone can say he was a waste of money for £1 million.....

A lot of people still haven't grasped the reality that many strikers go through longer goal droughts at some stages of their careers. Although every season there comes an Austin, Kane or Vardy ..the majority of them don't score consistantly. At a time during the winter when Mane and Pelle went weeks without scoring and Tadic couldn't even get a start, Shane Long put in a shift and DAJFU every week. Players can't /shouldn't only be judged by the number of goals they score, and Long is the most consistant trier I've seen in a Saints shirt for a very long time. He is a constant problem for defenders and with better luck would have had many more goals. I'm glad Koeman had patience with him - and somehow I feel - we haven't seen the best of him yet.
-
yes he does .......in the Championship. Perhaps the fact that he was ignored by three successive Saints managers says something more. Don't expect RK to suddenly re-sign him.

I was a disappointed fan at Wembley when we lost to Forest, who admittedly did have a very good side. The SF loss v. Everton was a travesty. We were much the better side and deserved the win on the day.
