If anyone has read the recently released book "The Nowhere Men" about scouting in English football, Gazzaniga gets several mentions while at Gillingham as the 'keeper from the lower leagues that many big clubs were watching and was destined for great things, so he must have something. I think he's just too nervous which makes him freeze and get everything wrong. Goalkeeper, more than any other position, is largely to do with having the right mentality and confidence - Boruc has it, Gazzaniga at this moment in time certainly doesn't.

If Fonte and Yoshida were that bad, why not have Stephens or Turnbull on the bench? What are these mystery injuries they both have? Chambers provided pretty decent cover for Clyne's position. We're now seeing MP having to manage with a similar first XI to what Adkins had to work with at the start of last season and he's getting similar results and performances.

If London was wiped off the map tomorrow, do you think a high-speed train service between Norwich and Birmingham will suddenly be built? Or a direct motorway between Cardiff and Doncaster? What unstable national infrastructure do we have to deal with as a result of London's utilities use? London is a big city that uses goods, resources and services the same as most big cities, it provides a great market for the rest of the UK, again, how is this detrimentally affecting the development of other parts of the UK? Sorry, are you contesting that the EPL doesn't make the UK a load of money, as well as raise the profile of provincial English cities? I've been in Manchester hotels midweek twice after big Man Utd home games, both times packed with foreign visitors. And you would rather Manchester was still famous for manufacturing textiles. Right, so you would rather the money that was invested in the Shard was spent in Paris or Frankfurt than London? Did you not think the Olympics were a success for the Uk as a whole? I think you need to check how much UK and EU government subsidy has been invested in industry and infrastructure around the UK over the last 30 years.

Yeah, I know the quote came from Vince Cable, I've read the article. I'd just assumed there was some decent detail and analysis to form an explanation to go with it, guess not.

I've read the story linked in the OP and can't see anything that explains how London is "sucking the life" out of the rest of the country. Is there another link to actually explain the thinking behind this viewpoint at all?
