  1. Dune, just out of interest, what is your opinion on Brits living and working abroad?
  2. From an employers point of view, a robust recruitment process should still end up with you taking on the strongest candidates, but with more degree graduates it does indeed mean a lot more people applying and means we need to sift through them a lot more carefully to get to the quality. Personally, I think degrees are becoming less important, unless they give you specific skills which you can't get elsewhere, but then my recruitment has always focused on the individual and not the qualification, because that always produces far better, long-term results, to get the right person to fit the team and the company. All that said, irrespective of uni course and places, young people still need employment, whether it's skilled or not, or relies on a degree or not. Personally, until the focus is shifted from profit to people, this problem will remain. Growth is not the answer to all the problems - it is likely to only create more. A steady state economy is more likely to increase employment opportunities whilst also bringing in returns on investment that are sustainable. But that's a whole other conversation.
  3. Well, my example of Mickey Evans above illustrates nicely that actually, no, other FA's don't always know players' eligibility. With a couple of other fans, I interviewed Evans back in 1997 for the Internet Saints Supporters Club, which was comprised of Saintslist subscribers. It was in that interview that we discovered his Irish grandparent, and only as a result of that were the Irish FA alerted, who checked it out and then called him up for his cap!
  4. Agree with sambosa - i think him leaving would actually be a good thing for Pompey. I really haven't seen any qualities about him as a manager and struggle to understand why anyone would want him.
  5. One minor issue with any kind of tower in that area - it would be right on the approach for the airport and so simply wouldn't happen. Aircraft are at approximately 900ft over the stadium, just 3 miles from the runway so no significant tower could realistically be built there.
  6. Oh no, has it? Always shopped there when I lived in Portswood - good quality fruit and veg at decent prices, and all whilst supporting a local independent trader. That's a sad loss. I shop in a couple of independent shops, and mainly Waitrose (or Ocado) for the bits I can't get elsewhere. And that has nothing to do with class and everything to do with quality and sustainability.
  7. Who are you, and what have you done with dune?!
  8. You could have that wrong. diggers could be in a civil partnership with Beatts' brother...?
  9. I want a 5D Mk2...
  10. Demo just being rolled out literally now, slightly ahead of schedule.
  11. Are you sure you want that man as your client?! A good (and sadly regular) one from my current workplace: "That will be ready in 48 hours madam" "So I can pick it up tomorrow then?"
  12. Turkish is clearly spending the day fishing...
  13. With respect LTC, you don't know what I do or don't do, but suffice to say that I do what I can, where I can, in line with my beliefs. I do boycott many shops and brands, and I have protested. I stand up for my beliefs where I can, and I'm also doing something about it, as I am Director of a Social Enterprise. It would be impossible to do everything in line with your beliefs actually, I believe that sometimes you need to engage with the thing you don't agree with in order to try and change it. Also, I didn't say that *I* demonise Sky. I don't particularly like them, just as I don't particularly like any of the larger companies who put shareholder profit before other considerations. I also didn't pick Sky, they happened to be the topic of discussion. I'll happily discuss other companies. My choice of phrase was probably wrong. I am a hypocrite - we all are. We all do things that we often say we don't like or agree with. Some are less hypocritical than others. The difficulties are that when large corporations get into the powerful positions that they have, it is often impossible to not have to shop somewhere or deal with a company you would rather not. For the man on the street, who loves football and used to watch it quite happily on terrestrial tv, to ask him to choose between paying a company he doesn't particularly like, or not doing the thing he loves, is not a fair nor straightforward choice. Sky saw a commercial opportunity in 1992 and took it. Their 'investment' in football has been a direct contributor to players' wage increases, along with wider football marketing initiatives. That was the general point I was making. Oh, and for clarity, I have ALWAYS stated my disappointment and personal dilemma at Saints' involvement in such an industry. But I am human, and I love football and the team I grew up with, which is what makes it all the harder to walk away, as much as I would dearly love to sometimes.
  14. Used to get a few at the airport from passengers, like: "Sorry sir, that flight is indefinitely delayed." "How long for?" and "Unfortunately the runway is currently closed because of fog." "Can't you do something about it?"
  15. That's all well and good... I don't have Sky because I am one of those who don't agree with the amount of money in football and I'm not a hypocrite... but the bigger issue here is that of the £40 a month, only a relatively small fraction goes towards the production costs of what are, I agree, good quality football programs. The vast majority is going directly to players as part of wages. I don't mind paying for a quality product, but the money in football is obscene, there is ZERO justification for it, in world where that money could be put to far better use, and THAT is why so many people 'demonise' Sky, for their contribution.
  16. Don't let the last game blind you to his heading ability. For a short guy it's pretty good. JPT trophy final for example. He has and will scored good headers. As for pace, well he's quicker than MLT, and can hold his own when breaking through an opposition back line... look at his last effort vs Burnley when put through and pulled back... he got ahead of his man. The first yard is in the head anyway, and Adam has that ability to know where to be and when to run (hence why he gets on the end of a number of heading opportunities, despite being quite short). All in all, he is a talented, intelligent footballer who will continue to improve and IMO, will definitely make a name for himself in the Prem, with us.
  17. Always worth digging out.
  18. And there's another thing that this place mostly lacks - humility. We've all said things and done things which in hindsight either we regret or realise were wrong or inappapropriate, but so many get ultra defensive, and/or use that as a stick to beat others with ('told you so' threads annoy me especially), and it should be remembered that emotions do run high, especially when the whole existence of your club is threatened! "To err is human, to forgive divine."
  19. Absolutely correct - but given that this is a discussion forum, the other key part of that is to actually try and explain the reasoning behind your polarised view, should you hold one, and to be able to accept criticism of it if alternative views are posted. That, sadly, is all too rare on here.
  20. I'm not even sure this is a new quote as yet - it is remarkably similar to what was written previously, and as was mentioned earlier in the thread, we also don't know what the journalist's questions were, what order, what the FULL reply was, and the context in which it was made. So, I for one won't be making any judgements. Sadly, as with most things in LIFE these days, let alone football, a majority of people are happy to make a decision and judgement based on their own interpretation of a *journalists* interpretation of a (possibly partial) reply given to an unknown question, with no knowledge of context or time frame. Anyone who can do so is a better man than I.
  21. No one knows the dressing room better than Nigel Adkins. I would trust him entirely. But I doubt it's even a possibility, just a bit of paper talk.
  22. Just out of interest, where does he live now?
  23. I liken it to having two good friends who are having a petty argument. I'm not going to take sides (nor should anyone IMO - what does it achieve, except more division?), I just want them to sort it out or move on.
  24. I did wonder but only after I'd replied... although that said, there are still people who probably would allow a queue or a poor PA announcement to ruin their day.
