Rickie is starting! Woooo hoooo! -
What a load of ******** this is. It's fair to state that he hasn't signed a British footballer in the summer window, but it's the insinuation that it means we lack confidence in Brits, or our youth that really puzzles me. I mean, of all clubs, Southampton lack confidence in the home-grown talent. Since the start of pre-season, I make it seventeen British players fielded, nine of which have been with the academy since before the age of fifteen. These are... K. Davis, Clyne, Chambers, Stephens, Turnbull, Shaw, Fox, Cork, S. Davis, Reed, Ward-Prowse, Lallana, Isgrove, Rowe, Sinclair, Rodriguez, Lambert. But yeah, damn that Argentine for buying three foreign internationals with Champions League experience, regardless of the blooding and use of youngsters alongside several other British players. They also appear confused as to what our crest looks like.

FA Chairman Greg Dyke plans to set up an FA Commission, comprising of the Premier League, Football League, Professional Footballers' Association and the League Managers' Association. He has called upon clubs to field more English plays, and provided more youngsters with first-team opportunities. He has also targeted a semi-final in Euro2020 and a final win in the 2022 World Cup. He's also looking into changing the loan market, tightening Premier League work-permit restrictions and looking into a winter break. Is it true that too many average foreign players are joining the Premier League, and are stunting the growth of English youngsters? http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23963416 On a Southampton level, I feel we are doing our bit. In our matchday squads, you currently see Calum Chambers, Luke Shaw, James Ward-Prowse and Adam Lallana. I'd say that's pretty good going. Cortese's policy of buying for the first team, e.g. bringing in Lovren, Wanyama, Osvaldo gives immediate strength, whilst himself and the committee then support and pad the squad with academy youngsters, with his well-known target of getting 50% of the academy into the first team. Others then observe the opportunities earned and given to the likes of Luke, James, Adam and Calum, and it therefore draws more talent towards the Saints academy. So what are your thoughts?

Your favourite Saints players that weren't popular?
Saint-Armstrong replied to Bad Wolf's topic in The Saints
Was Papa Waigo popular? He wasn't exactly a huge fan favourite, but he will be fondly remembered for that JPT win. -
I'd say... SAINTS: Boruc; Clyne, Yoshida, Lovren, Shaw; Wanyama, Schneiderlin; Ramirez, Lallana, Rodriguez; Osvaldo. BENCH: Gazzaniga, Chambers, Fonte, Cork, S. Davis, Ward-Prowse, Lambert. (for the next game) Nice to have options though. At current, I'd drop Lambert for Osvaldo to see how that works.

Official: Saints academy player most expensive player ever

Gareth Bale: "I am well aware that I would not be at the level I am today were it not for Southampton." -
I've said it in a few places now. I didn't really understand MP's subs or his interview, yet I didn't get to watch the game. My main point is: Everyone has **** days at work. Football managers are people just like me and you. We all have crap days.

Two-year deal. Undisclosed fee. Lots of good memories. Thanks Deano. -
Have you ever gone out your way to watch an ex saint as a neutral?
Saint-Armstrong replied to kwsaint's topic in The Saints
I went to Southend vs Yeovil in the cup as a couple of mates was going. I expected to see Hoskins play. He did, and was quite good. Seaborne was benched and Paul Smith was on the bench for Southend. -
Steve de Ridder has a pop at English football culture
Saint-Armstrong replied to Lallana's Left Peg's topic in The Saints
Just seen this courtesy of a retweet... from Dirk De Ridder - Steve's father: "FC Utrecht signing De Ridder slams Southampton culture - completely blown out of proportion - nothing but respect for UK & Saintsfc" -
In the warm up before the Sunderland game. He was sat on the cinder track round the outside of the pitch after doing it, up the Chapel End.

What an intake this was! November 2010... before we played Brighton at home. Fantastic to see them all in the senior squad (or its fringes).
