I think you misunderstood my meaning. I meant the teams he played and how he changed them during the game. I reckon our supposed "first XI" finally stepped out together for Orient following the Southend game last May. However, thinking about it, the line-up of friendlies themselves was pretty useless too. We hardly got into the groove against the type of opposition we knew to expect this season, did we ?

This is fair comment, but I keep hearing the season (and winning promotion) is a marathon and not a sprint. I have serious misgivings that AP could deliver promotion; despite his pretty good transfer record, I have doubts about what he did the players he won. And the friction with NC was always going to blow up at some point, and could have occurred in early Spring and really f**ked us up. Provided NC does a good job of securing a manager, I still maintain that over this "marathon" we could have a better chance of promotion.

Yep. We were something special then. About a year ago I went to a friend of my wife's birthday party, here in Austria. I was introduced to her father, a big football fan. He asked me where in England I came from. When I told him he got excited and started going on about this Southampton team and how the climax to that season got a lot of attention in Austria because apparently a lot of people were rooting for us to overtake Liverpool. My own distant recollection is that this wasnt possible and we only sneaked into second place right at the end, so didint really know what he was talking about.
