The Victor Wanyama/Jack Cork debate
Baird of the land replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Wanyama was a good addition to the squad. What i find utterly bemusing is that Cork, one of our best players from last season can't get a look in or even a place on the bench. The midfield was crying out for change yesterday. -
Post Match Reaction: SAINTS 0-0 West Ham
Baird of the land replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Osvaldo looked lively, Lambert looked decent, the defence was pretty solid with exception of panic where collins almost scored. Terrible conditions, mediocre west ham team, 2 points dropped. Personally Wanyama was rather poor today and Saints were far too slow and cumbersome in possession. Can't believe Cork wasn't even on the bench as i would had him on today to get us moving the ball around. -
A serious transfer window review thread...
Baird of the land replied to Unbelievable Jeff's topic in The Saints
Largely happy. We've signed 3 quality players that have improved our squad. Little bit disappointed both Mayuka & Puncheon have gone and no one else pacey has come in. -
Finally back home after going up to Norwich to watch the game. Saints were dogged but lacked much cutting edge. Both fullbacks in particular were clearly in trouble(chambers got forward but had a really tough afternoon with Redmond) while fox seemed so intent on not screwing up defensively that all he seemed able to do was pass it back to Lovren. Lovren was my MOTM for saints, what a player he is! Boruc:6 (Taken off guard for the goal but otherwise looked decent) CHambers: 5 (Rough afternoon for the lad, hopefully clyne will be back next week Fox: 5 (limited but not terrible but need shaw back to give us attacking impetus. Lovren: 8 (superb never seemed to miss anything) Fonte: 7 (Solid game by fonte) Wanyama: 7 (Needs to improve his passing and shooting but certainly gives us muscle in the middle but outdone by their guy fer) Schneiderlin: 6 (Worked hard) JWP: 4 (real off day for the lad. Outmuscled by their mid and offered nothing going forward. Should have been off when Davis came on. Lallana: 7 (bright sometimes trying to do too much and delaying the shot. Really unlucky with the shot off post and unlucky to be taken off) Lambert: 6 (Some lovely layoffs and lovely ball in to jrod at the end that i felt sure was going to be the equaliser. Playing too deep for my liking and his freekick effort was poor. Osvaldo: 5 (I'll give him time. He still hasn't developed an understanding with others and he really should have been off much earlier for jrod. Subs: Davis: 6 (Gave us energy and unfortunately snatched shot when well placed) Jrod: 6 (Real difference was the understanding he had with others and he'd no doubt have a higher stat if he'd been on longer) Ramirez: 4 (So frustrating as he is so talented. Had a glorious chance to chance but utterly refused to shoot. Several times just gave the ball away cheaply.

Guly is the only surprise from that 11 really. The question is, is he also injured or is he off?

Post Match Reaction & MotM: SAINTS 1-1 Sunderland
Baird of the land replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Decent if frustrating result. Switching off and conceding that early goal was so costly as it allowed them to just sit and absorb pressure. A game last season i think we would have lost, so a point more of the board against a reasonable side. Thought Ramirez looked bright when he came on & Osvaldo is going to get sent off at some point this season. -
Potch has to work out a way to play against teams that aren't going to come on to Saints. Lambert is clearly causing them problems but too much of our possession is in front of their 2 banks of four, rather than finding a way to get into the channels behind them.

England Moldova Sept 6th. Rickie in squad?
Baird of the land replied to Giordano's topic in The Saints
If he carries on scoring and Carroll/Defoe aint then can't see how he won't make the next squad. However he'll have to keep it up all season or else Roy will take any excuse to drop him imo. -
I wouldn't be surprised if Shaw left at the end of the season, though i hope we keep him longer. Now though when Cole & Evra would be guaranteed to be in front of him in the pecking order at Chelsea/Man U it would be crazy imo. Just to set himself back a year in his development by spending 95% of his time watching from the bench. He's playing in an up and coming premiership team where if he carries on performing he will be able to move there & be their 1st choice. Plus 10m is utterly derisory. I wouldn't let them buy his little finger for such a tiny sum.

Puncheon to Palace - Official (Season Loan)
Baird of the land replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Yep a good player but one who Potch likely didn't feel suited the way he wants to play. Hence his contract was likely only renewed to cover in case we weren't able to attract the likes of Osvaldo. -
Puncheon to Palace - Official (Season Loan)
Baird of the land replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Not at all surprised if true. Said on here once we signed Osaldo that Punch would likely be off. He's not the sort of player suited to hanging about in the reserves. Slightly disappointed as he had a decent season last year. -
-----------Boruc---------------- Clyne---Lovren---Fonte---Shaw ---Wanyama---Schneiderlin--- -----------Davis------------ Osvaldo---Lambert---Lallana Bench Davis, Yoshida, JWP, Rodriguez, Ramirez, Cork, Chambers
-
Don't think so. We really needed competition/ extra fire power. Think Puncheon may be off somewhere now though.

Seems a very good deal for Bournemouth.
-
A frustrating player who clearly had some talent, especially at Champ level. Wish him the best elsewhere.
-
Seems to be a lot of anti-Lallana people
Baird of the land replied to Saint-Beer's topic in The Saints
I like Lallana a lot as a player. Really hope he can have a big season. Part of me does wonder if he would thrive better in a freer role. -
Not from Southampton but now living in London. Picked Saints when i was about 7, little knowing what a rollercoaster ride i was setting myself up for.

Happy with quality over quantity any day. If we can just get another good option upfront i'll be very excited about where we are heading this season.

Premiership Released players...
Baird of the land replied to Dibden Purlieu Saint's topic in The Saints
Personally thought he was a very good right back. Maybe not the modern attacking one in vogue at the moment but then defending has always been my primary valuation of defenders. Worst right back i ever saw for Saints was Ostlund. Couldn't defend at all. -
Premiership Released players...
Baird of the land replied to Dibden Purlieu Saint's topic in The Saints
Would love to see Baird back at Saints. We do need a 2nd choice right back and since he's a versatile player too it might be worth a shot. At 31 still has a number of decent years in him. -
Retained List - When Published?
Baird of the land replied to View From The Top's topic in The Saints
Surprised we've released Richardson. Seemed a very solid deputy for Clyne imo. -
Saints 3 Liverpool 1 - Post Match Reactions
Baird of the land replied to St Chalet's topic in The Saints
Felt absurdly confident of the 3 points against Liverpool given the recent form. Thought they were a team that would be ripe for the taking if we applied ourselves. Very happy to see it come to pass. Hopefully we can push on and guarantee safety. -
Poor selections by the Potchettino imo, coupled with mediocre performances. Really puts Saints in deep trouble. No point in beating Man City if you get embarassed by QPR.
-
So are we now officially OVER Nigel Adkins
Baird of the land replied to Miltonroader07's topic in The Saints
Still very disappointed at the treatment of Adkins. Was very unsure of Potchettino choice but so far he seems to have potential. Cortese may not be the nicest guy and while it is still early day it might turn out to be a shrewd appointment. -
Find it odd that we apparently have no intention to bring anyone in. Better hope no one gets injured or we could be in trouble.
