  1. I thought what put the 'Great' into Great Britain was colonialism, slavery, and an arrogant assumption that God put the British on Earth to teach everybody else what was right - which generally meant 'what's mine is mine, and what's yours is mine'. Maybe my posting was a bit OTT but I am pig sick of having the 'cult of celebrity' forced upon me at every turn, and I would return to the basic gist of my point; wtf is he to do with 'sorting out' education ? He's just being put up as an acceptable mouth piece for somebody else's social theories.
  2. I just wish somebody would take one of his pans and smack the smug b@st@rd full in the face. What the f()ck does he know about education, he comes over as a thick essex ***t.

  5. "Southampton have failed to beat a top flight team in the cup since they were relegated from the Premier League", ( or something approximating that ), during the commentary on the ManUre match a few weeks ago.

  8. For some this is not a surprise. Regardless of the colour of ribbon the successful donkey is wearing, history's lesson is that we just get 'same old same old'.

  13. If only to play 'spot the quote' - including quoting Ripley back at Sigourney Weaver.

  16. Surely 'Bridge on the River Kwai' isn't a NAZI war film ? Battle of the River Plate is a typical Brit flick, Das Boot & Downfall are superb portayals of what war is really like, ( and as with Downfall, try watching Boot in german with subtitles - it's much better ). Any old b&w film with John Mills - Dunkirk, Ice Cold in Alex, Above Us the Waves, etc. Battle of Britain / Angels One Five. The Cruel Sea Von Ryan's Express Casablanca ( ? )
  17. Stop living in the real world. Facts don't make good newspaper stories.

  20. As far as I am aware, all councils have been pressured by Georgie Porgie to freeze Council Tax for the coming year.
  21. Where's the post match wrist slitting thread ?
  22. What you have to remember about Local Government is that most of what they do is statutory, and carried out under the direction of Westminster, which is also where most of the money comes from. The Councillors have an ability to directly affect no more than about 35% of what is done by their staff.
  23. At least we've achieved what is always quoted as the key aim of an away team, keep the home crowd quiet.
  24. Let's hope for a big improvement in the next 45 minutes.
  25. Much as I hate to admit it, this post sums the whole process up. It is just a sop to disaffected LibDems. FPTP is a severely flawed system, which is skewed by the regional discrepencies in the political balance in the 4 home countries, and AV is not going to change a thing, ( see this analysis of the 2010 election - http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/may/10/alternative-vote-minimal-impact-general-election ). If we are going to change we must go for STV, but the referendum has been fixed by giving us a choice between 'no change' and 'effectively no change'.
