How do you make a quality player stay at Saints!
Redslo replied to Saint Billy's topic in The Saints
FFP would limit the effectiveness of a big money takeover. And it doesn't look like we are losing players to spurs on money. (It appears that we were willing to pay Toby enough money, he just chose Spurs.) Likely, living in London has its attractions. But I am not an expert on that, all of England is too cold for me. Everton does not pay that much more than we do and it is not clear that they will be able to continue outpaying us at all. Everton has shown a willingness to sign a big expensive player when we have not but I am not sure that demonstrates that they are better able to retain players. Lukaku may view playing for a bigger club in the same way we hope Bertrand does--been there, done that, rather player first team football. Exactly. Although, to the extent the top four club evaluates talent correctly, this means we can not catch them. But that is probably true anyway. Why not just build a high speed rail line from Southampton to London so the trip takes less than a half hour? She is actually the doctor. Or maybe I was being sexist in my assumptions and you were referring to the physio, Jon Fearne. My apologies. But that really only works for one season. Eventually, if a player won't sign a new contract, you are going to lose him. FFP changes sound like a good idea, but they only hold us back if our owner is willing to invest hundreds of millions. Clearly, she is not. I don't disagree, but London's population is an advantage too. There are more people to buy tickets and other stuff and the richer ones are willing to pay higher prices for tickets and stuff so ipsy doopsy there is more money to put into the club. This may be the only realistic idea anyone has suggested. But I am at a loss as to how to make an actually club strategy out of it. -
Shall we start a contest to guess the number of tickets sold by Southampton?

Good show. Now only 76 out of 82 have been negative and still only 24 references to Everton. We could have paid more for the players we signed this summer. I am sure the other clubs would have been ok with it. What were we thinking? We don't know that he isn't saying that. For that matter we don't know that they haven't put their foot down and said Mane and Wanyama aren't going. You will notice that last year, we were not forced into any late sales. We did our sales early so that people would have more time to complain. This makes no sense. Our current top performing players are Fonte, Mane, Pelle, and (if he were healthy) Bertrand. Good response. English football needs reforming with an actual salary cap and more even revenue sharing. Since that is not going to happen we are stuck unless we get lucky in a breakthroughs season. That almost happened last year. My only real criticism of SFC was the sale of Cork. I think the benefit of keeping him for our Champions League run outweighed the small amount of money we got for him. Imagine if we had him to play during Wanyama's two game suspension and Schniederlin's injury. But that is water under the bridge. But what is the alternative? Refuse the sell them and have them be disruptive and then lose them for nothing? And we have to replace them on the cheap because the club's wage structure cannot afford to buy players to replace them not on the cheap. I don't see the big difference unless the 3.5m one isn't good enough. And if that is the case, that is also the real problem.

CONFIRMED - Oriol Romeu joins on 3-Year Deal
Redslo replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
As the season played out, with Wanyama's suspension and Schneiderlin's injury, holding onto Cork almost certainly would have put us in fifth place and could have put us in fourth place. The additional income for finishing fifth would have basically covered the transfer fee we received for him. -

I think you are confusing real names, code names, and a TV detective. -

maybe he was posting disinformation. He might even be framing someone else at work he doesn't like. This ITK stuff is really just like a spy novel. -

Or we have used it on other things like paying off transfer fees from prior years and Staplewood.

The answer is money. They get a lot of money by being in the group phase. The additional money for getting out of the group phase is not that significant and they will rarely do so even if they keep their better players. They do not need great players to win their league so the key part of their season is the CL qualification phase. This might change in the future if the Rangers ever come back. -
He would also count as club trained for European purposes and would not use up a roster spot--we could register 23 players instead of 22.

I guess I am missing something. What is wrong with buying one of those scarves as a souvenir of a special day in Southampton history?
-
Thanks for pointing that out. I will see what happens.
-
That's not fair. You have to predict the whole season whereas Lawro gets to go week by week.
-
Not really, it increases the chance England will lose its fourth champions League spot which would mean one less club qualifies for Europe in 2017-2018. It could only help us if West Ham and Southampton would have tied for the last seeded spot in tomorrow's draw and they would win whatever tiebreaker is to be used.

CONFIRMED - Virgil Van Dijk joins on Five Year Deal
Redslo replied to Brizzie Saints's topic in The Saints
Not very. Since they are not in Europe, they are allowed to lose 35 million pounds a year on average. Their total wages for 2013-2014 was 70 million pounds, but the wage cap for that year was 52 million pounds. Presumably at least 18 million was not for players so they are ok there as well. The only real limit them face is that they cannot increase their wages year over year by more than 4 million or by their increase in non-TV income, which ever is greater. -
Maybe Shaw did this too. He did sign a long term contract when he didn't have to and we got lots of money. Except that we would have signed Osvaldo and Ramirez to 5 year contracts too. I don't think there is any way to do this right reliably. Maybe a four year contract with a club option for a fifth year that can be exercised after three years but gives the player a significant raise? Maybe even more so. Good point. The pressure to stay up with the big new TV contract on the horizon will be immense.
