Given that he has been found guilty by 12 of his peers for the crime of rape, you would think at the very least that he could see that in the eyes of some people he has done wrong and shown some remorse for that. I idolised Ron Davies when I was younger and I am sure kids idolise footballers nowdays - why where their names on the back of your shirt if you dont hold them in some kind of esteem. What mssage is Evans sending to the kids who see him as some kind of Saturday afternoon hero? Treat women like doormats and that is fine. For me it doesnt work. How can you chant the name of someone who acts like he has done? He has the right to earn a living and I dont care how much money he makes, but he needs to go and crawl under a rock somewhere well out of the public eye IMO.

All I can think of with Evans is that the fact that he still can't accept that what he has done is wrong and he and his pals have continued to torment the victim. McCormick has shown remorse and accepts his responsibility in causing death. I don't know much about the other 2. Perhaps all of them shouldn't be allowed to play professional football anymore but I think that outrage re Evans is more about his attitude. There are also people who cause death by dangerous driving who are not drunk, they have just made an error of judgement on the road that has ended someone's life. Murder it aint but it still has the same end result - someone dies. As I said earlier the degrees of separation are not huge but intent does play a part.

By pointing out the obvious fact that these people have not murdered anyone (it is called causing death by dangerous driving and not murder for a reason) I have tried to demonstrate that there is a difference. If you feel that is minimising the loss of life that is down to you. Would you agree that there is a difference between the 2 offences? Perhaps I should put it another way - why do you think more people are outraged about Evans than they are about these three other footballers???

I am not going to minimise the loss of life here but many people on this list have driven a car drunk and have been lucky to get home without killing themselves or anyone else. I doubt if there are many here who have raped anyone. Causing death by dangerous driving is a very serious offence but it is not murder. If we were talking about three footballers who had committed murder I am sure the outcry would be similar to that of Evans. I agree that the degrees of separation are not huge, but I think they are significant. It is a tough call.

I think there were things said at the time but death by dangerous driving, as awful as these cases are, are different to rape. McCormick was certainly repentatant - not sure about the responses of the other two but Evans has not helped himself since his release regarding his attitude towards his conviction and the victim. The victim is still being victimised and has had to move 5 times since the offence took place.

Tommy Cooper and Eric Morecombe were both funny men without trying and they still make me laugh today whereas many of their era the comedy hasn't aged that well. There were some classics in the Ripping Yarns series - Tompkinson's Schooldays was epic as was the one about the football supporter. Michael Palin is a great comic actor.
