Building from the back

The one thing that we haven’t had for a long time is a solid defensive unit to a team, in the last 5-6 seasons we have always conceded too many goals.

For the first time in god knows how long, we actually have the manager, the coaches and the resources to build from the back – with the signings of Murts, Harding, Jaidi and Trotman – Pard’s has totally transformed our defense.

I think the whole defensive discipline of the team has changed too – there is a solid spine right down the middle, full of height, strength and power which is a threat in both boxes. Pard’s said this week that the disciplines are now installed...and we can now go ahead and start getting down to business.

I think credit is due to Wally Downes too – who’s come in to focus specifically on the defense, he takes the ‘’match day’’ back 4 away for specific training sessions, which is why IMO we’re looking such a solid unit at the moment

I’m quite excited – because this is quite a good team pard’s has built here, both on and off the pitch

I agree with that but we need to start collecting a few clean-sheets.

We're not far from that - we only conceded today from a direct free kick, smashed into the top corner from 25 yards.

Only complaint you could have was the foul being committed by harding in the first place - but the defense sounded excellent tonight.

Agree, but small steps at a time. Keep it up and the clean sheets will come. The goal tonight was a good free kick by all accounts so not much could be done.

I'd actually go the other way and praise Saints going forward, I don't think we really have been conceding too many goals to be quite frank. But of course if you lose 1 or 2 nil you tend to criticise the defending for the goals you concede. Considering these past three games we've finally been able to score two or more goals from open play - which we failed to do in the first 9 games of the season my main praise would be to the strikers

If you look at the bigger picture, having the disciplines installed in the defensive side of the game - and having a defensive unit to trust, has allowed us to be more flamboyant going forward - which is why the goals are coming.
