Giles Barnes...

Someone at work (a Palace fan strangely enough) mentioned that apparently we may be looking at him on a free, after being released by Derby. Now I seem to remember him being massively highly rated a couple of years ago, but he seems to have gone the way of Cherno Samba. Anyone know anything of this?

Very good player and one I mentioned on the HCDAJFU thread (alhough totally fair not to have read down to the sheer size of the thread), about him being out of contract but I was unsure whether we'd be able to attract someone of Barnes quality. Saying that, that was before we signed Fonte so the new phase of transfers has stated it's intent. That was be an amazing signing if we managed that but I'd imagine wages may be an issue & whether he'd be seduced by Pardew's plans/ambition.

If we could get him & rehabilitate him, & he got even close to his previous form. It would be a fabulous signing. Could well be what AP was talking about on Saturday.

When he was fit & at his peak for Derby he was a real threat, & there were plenty of Prem teams looking at him. The thing only thing that makes me worry is why are Derby letting him go on a free? They obviously feel he will never regain his match fitness! Or is it that they can't come to an agreement on a new deal?

Derby were right about Holmes IMHO..But take your point... Some Peeps like Connolly work out. gamble ..fingers crossed.....If bARNES showed AT TRAINING with Birmingham ..They may snap him up.. or Div 1/ CCC IN THE FUTURE IF HE RETURNS TO MATCH LEVEL is his level.

Rumours re McClaggon and fitness come to mind...Is he going to fully recover at Eastbourne and come back..Hope so.:)

Guess Barnes is also a victim of circumstance, esp the massive churn of managers at Derby. Has always struck me as a bit of hit-and-miss showboater rather than a 100 percenter but Billy Davies seemed to tolerate him because they had f**k all craft or quality. When Davies left, Jewell loaded the team with new signings in an attempt to stamp his mark on the place. That failed and left Derby with one of the biggest, most bloated squads in the CCC. No doubt, Barnes has been part of the inevitable cull and Clough as a raw, younger manager eager to prove himself has been ruthless with that cull; finally, there's not much tolerance for a lame or injured showboaters in this country - indeed there's not much tolerance for fit showboaters. This is especially if pace was seen as part of the repertoire.
