mightysaints Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Hi All Not sure where to post this so here goes. Can't afford a propper ski holiday this year so a couple of us (guys) are looking to do a cheap trip. I am planning a ski trip to Chamonix mid to late March. Will drivedown to Chamonix via the Skate ferry on a weds eve, takes approx 9 hrs to get to Chamonix. We will be staying in cheap accommodation and look to go back on a Monday. You will need to be an average Skier/boarder as most of Chamonix is not for beginners. Chamonix is a fantastic ski area and theres a good chance we will ski the Vallee Blanche weather permitting. Also its best if you have your own gear so that you don't have to muck about spending time hireing the kit
Sheaf Saint Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Out of interest, how much do you expect to spend on this all in? I haven't been able to afford a boarding holiday for the last 3 seasons now and I'm itching to get away again. Would be interested to see if this is do-able for me. ericofarabia Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Already booked up for 12 days in Tignes over Easter period .... only to find out that the weekend we travel coincides with the scheduled date for The JPT Final Anybody know if there are any decent bars in Tignes that show Sky Sports (should the need arise )? St Landrew Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Cheap Skiing Now that really is affordable. Though I suspect the apres-ski is a bit iffy.
MongoNeil Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 What is the point of this post, you just showing off? ;-) Chamonix is horrendously expensive to be fair though. If you want cheap French Alps check out the port-du-soleil, so that's the likes of Morzine and Les Gets, not as far to drive either. I'm off to Val Thorens in a week for a weeks boarding, can't wait :-)
Hatch Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Went Skiing once in Bulgaria. Hated it. Nearly killed myself on the slopes due to a mixture of alcohol , no sleep and the complete inability to ski. Then nearly got shot in the evening by mad Bulgarian mafia who didn't like us getting frisky with the cheap bulgarian whores. Even the taxi drivers had pistols on their dashboards. The Viking Bar used to be run by a Bradford fan and used to show all The Sky Matches and The Sky Saturday afternoon show. It's just down from The Frog and Roastbeef which is officially the highest pub in Europe and had some imported Swiss ales . They also show all the footie as well. Be sure to do The tobbogan run, a real hoot. Have fun. :smt023
Whitey Grandad Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 I have never skied but I went there a few years ago for a look around and we stayed a bit further up the valley in Argentiere. My French customer had been there for a long weekend and he and his brother know the area well. He told me how they had skied the Valle Blanche and also down into Italy and back. The chairlifts go both ways from Mont Blanc. He is quite a good skier even though he only has one arm. The hotel wasn't too expensive and had reasonable food so it might be worth a look: http://www.hotel-le-dahu.com/accueil_en.html
maxi_sopez Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 i Have been to chamonix three or four times...its good skiing but dont go when the french schools are on holiday as it is so busy! ski is good and a good test for all abilities, but be warned if they have heavy snow then many of the pistes can be closed the next day due to avalanches, so you need to go to les houches which is good cos there are trees! also on a night go to to MBC its a canadian bar in chamonix does metre long pipes of beer and the best burgers ever top top top night! Go check them out. The great thing about Slovakia is that it is really cheep and Jasna has great runs.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 I'm no good at skiing, but I slipped and skidded on ice earlier, it's basically the same thing.
norwaysaint Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 I ski loads and it never costs me a thing, but I assume you mean downhill, which I don't do. Norway's not exactly a cheap place to come to either.
