Jake Thomson

Saw this on the HCDAJFU thread and thought it deserved a thread of it's own. Jake Thomson has returned to Torquay on loan for the rest of the season. Has anyone seen him play at Torquay or know how he's getting on there? Heard very little about his spell there so would be interesting to find out how he's getting on.

Would be interesting to see what people think his role in the team will be now? He was a bit-part player last year but he's had barely any first team action here this season. Does Pardew see him as part of his plans? Is he worth keeping around when we could have players like Antonio and Waigo signed on a permanent basis?

Personally I think he's got a good amount of potential but he's 21 or something now, so he's progressed from 'youngster' into the next category of player, so any mistakes can't really be blamed on youth and inexperience. I don't think at the moment he's good enough to be playing at this level, so either another loan spell next season or maybe offload him along with some others at the end of the season. It'd be a shame to see him leave but I think he may have found his level at L1/L2 and can't see him progressing much beyond that level.

If i remember rightly he had a decent turn of pace on him but for some stupid reason he was employed as a RB by the dutch twonks.

I always thought he looked a decent prospect but now seeing as he is 21 and tbh it looks as if our spending will continue for a while yet, i would say let him leave for 1st team football if he gets the oppertunity.

Torquay think very highly of him, he's been a big success down there. (i think he's also popped up with a few goals?)

He's got good ability IMO - but always seemed to lack that bit of belief in himself, if this loan move makes him believe in his own ability, he could be a handy player for us next year.

He had tons of self belief in the U18 team...........but was lost in the first team.......agreed might well be a good shout next year.

Same, past problem with a lot of the players played during the Dutch era, Too slow & not up to the standard we require!

Slow.....?

I'm not sure he's good enough for us either but to call him slow is ridiculous. He's not Waigo or Antonio quick but he's a step above any one else in the squad in terms of pace.

He is doing very well down here. Since he came into the team they have been doing much better and pulled out of the relegation spots. No disrispect to Torquay but he is too good for that level. Maybe he looks good in a low league 2 team or maybe he needs to step up?

Think its a good thing for him to stay till the end of the season. Papers down here the other day said he had gone back for talks with Pards. I guess the idea of him playing 1st team football is better for all parties. I would imagine him to be loaned to a low level league 1 team next season with Pards deciding if he has a place with us or not soon after.

All of this should have happened a while ago so he was ready for a crack at our 1st team now. 1 year set back shouldnt be too much for him to handle though.

Torquay fan here. Thomson started ok, floated in and out of games. He grew into his position on the left wing and started to play fantastically well - a tricky winger, extremely fast, skills and an end product. Recently he has been switched to the right wing and has gone off the boil, looking unmotivated and not bothered and tbh, we are surprised his loan has been extended. Now it has been we are hoping our injuries clear up and he can be switched back on to the left where he showed brilliant form. At one stage we were worried about a recall he was playing so well but it only lasted four or five games.

To the guy who said he's not fast - he'd give Antonio a run for his money from what I've seen.

  • 3 weeks later...

Thomson got another strop on after being substituted in the Port Vale game because of another poor performance and has been sent back. He showed glimpses of real talent but when the team started to struggle he played like an arsehole. His attitude seems to be a problem.

I refuse to acknowledge the existence of an opinion which states that Jake Thomson is "slow". Absolute, utter cobblers. He is one of the fastest players at the club.

No end product, maybe, lack of confidence, probably. Slow, no.
