Tamesaint Posted 14 May, 2010 Share Posted 14 May, 2010 Does anyone know why away goals in the playoffs do not count double ?? It cost us big time 3 years ago. It cost Leicester the other night. Most two leg encounters these days have away goals counting double. Why are the league play -offs different??
MulletMan Posted 14 May, 2010 Share Posted 14 May, 2010 No idea why, but the away goal rule is a joke anyway. I am glad they don´t use it, even though we would be through to the finals 3 years ago.
chrisobee Posted 14 May, 2010 Share Posted 14 May, 2010 Well there are at least 3 different rules applying to away goals I can think of straightaway: 1) The standard away goals count double after 90 mins in the 2nd leg 2) In the League Cup away goals count double after ET in the 2nd leg 3) As above they don't count at all ! Surely anything is better than penalties?

markr27 Posted 14 May, 2010 Share Posted 14 May, 2010 Really think if away goals count for something over two legs they should only matter for 90 mins. I did think it was harsh on Liverpool for losing this season against Athletico on away goals; why should they have 120 mins to score 1 goal, when Liverpool only had 90? saintjinksie Posted 14 May, 2010 Share Posted 14 May, 2010 2006 v Man Utd ? thats the one methinks, you get an extra half an hour to score the away goal. seems unfair advantage fo rplaying away 2nd. I think my head would have exploded if rasiaks goal in 2007 playoffs had got us through.
Super_Saint Posted 14 May, 2010 Share Posted 14 May, 2010 What would everyone prefer?, To be in the situation we're in now, with a billionaire in league 1 or when we played Derby away goals counted and we went on to achieve promotion. But obviously Lowe would be here and we could have dropped back down straight away.
Lets B Avenue Posted 14 May, 2010 Share Posted 14 May, 2010 1980 League Cup. 90 mins. Watford 5 Saints 1. We would have won on away goals and I wouldn't have been bitten by a police dog.
Edmonton Saint Posted 14 May, 2010 Share Posted 14 May, 2010 I am sure George Burley had something to do with the away goal rule getting scrapped, which was kind of ironic as we would have gotten through against Derby if it had still been in place. Yeah Burley lost out on the away goals rule then campaigned for it to be changed. Then he benefited from that change as Ipswich beat Bolton in the play off semi in 2000 after extra time. An away goals rule would have seen them go out in normal time. It then went against him in 2007. c*nt.
anothersaintinsouthsea Posted 14 May, 2010 Share Posted 14 May, 2010 you could look at from the other angle. the team at home in the second leg might get home advantage for an extra 30mins - this negates the away goals advantage.
The Godfather Posted 14 May, 2010 Share Posted 14 May, 2010 simple, away goals don't count in the play-offs. Get over it, they didn't cost us against derby. Everybody knew the rules.

Why should one goal count more than another, a goal is a goal is a goal. Or why not go the other way, and have away fouls, away bookings (you have to get booked 4 times to get sent off), away corners (you're allowed to take it from the corner of the penalty area, like a short corner in hockey. The9 Posted 15 May, 2010 Share Posted 15 May, 2010 Well, that's covered it - other than to say anyone saying the bloody things "count double" should be shot in the head. HTH.

Give me an example where by doubling the away goals it gives a different result to the way you would like everybody to work it out, and I will concede you have a point. It means a team that is losing can score one goal and go from losing to winning. It makes games much more exciting. It also stops teams going away from home and playing for 0-0. What's not to love about it?

But obviously Lowe would be here and we could have dropped back down straight away. I do love the whole situation at the club at the moment - a quiet money man in charge, a confident chairman in place, the ground paid off, new training facilities and perhaps the best squad we've seen for the level we play at since the Strachan years. However back in those play off days we didn't know that any of this would have happened. Scraping through and going up wouldn't necessarily have got us relegated from the Premiership straight away - and even if it did we would have two years of Premiership parachute payments to soften the blow. Promotion to the Premiership would have been far from a bad thing, I genuinely don't think we'd have dropped down to League One at all, but we would have been a comfortable CCC side. The difference with the current set up is that we have ambitions to get back to the Premiership and stay there - and the set up in place to do it. So yes, I'd prefer our current set up, just, but promotion to the Premiership wouldn't have been a bad thing at the time - it's where we all, REALLY, want to be. (Although I'll just be happy to be back in the CCC).
