Turkish Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 I'm going to be getting a new car soon and need something decent as going to be putting 30k or so a year on it. Toyed with the idea of just getting a new or year old a3/a4 or BMW 3 series but decided against it due to the massive depreciation. Saab 93s look well priced in in 3-4 year old age group, pick up a low mileage one for about 3-4k less than an A4 or 3 series but had no experience of them myself. I'll probably keep it for 2 years and put about 60k on it so not expecting it to be worth much at the end, just rather lose 5k than 10k in depreciation. A collegue had one and loved his. Anyone else got any thoughts?
hamster Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 Me. Got an old R reg 900. Not a single rust spot and sails through an NOT. Mine's been very reliable. It's an auto which are not good on fuel consumption though. THE most comfy car I've owned but I'm only little so don't know if same applies to the larger framed. If I was gonna change and on a budget a 9/3 would be top of my list, I'm actually wanting an XK6 but know they can be costly to run and maintain so willing to wait for our fortunes to improve substantially. WASN's are views as 'old men's cars' as they're a bit sombre, try one before letting that put you off though. It's also a tattoo which doesn't suit really fast cornering as their not that rigid. Imho inevitable the best looking with the roof down. Rear seats very comfy too but with roof down it looks like they're in w windtunnel I too have noticed the 3/4 year olds are genuine bargains. Volumin's Dad swears by them BTW.
dronskisaint Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 And you can support the new owners down the road too...good plan! I've not had one but my neighbour has had two...the current one being a 9.3. He loves his but, to me, they seem to spend a fair bit of time in the garage with niggly electrical faults,,,both have had these. That being said he still swears by the brand and, like you, buys after someone else has taken the first depreciation hit...both times with around 20k on the clock. My PA had a convertible (circa 06-7 model..had a private plate) that she loved - got shot of it because the electric roof kept playing up if I remember correctly. I can ask specific questions if it helps?
hutch Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 Not owned one, but had a 9-3 estate diesel turbo as hire car a couple of years ago. I took it back and changed it, the turbo lag was downright dangerous. Put foot down to pull out into traffic, and nothing happened until the gap I was aiming for had disappeared. Then it took off like a rocket.
Trader Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 Used to be really good until GM got hold of them - had 3 9000's and an old-style 900. Then bought the ex an new-style 900 (GM), after she'd written off the old-style , and it was pants in comparison. Wouldn't touch one now. BTW the 9-3 used to have a problem with a cracking bulkhead, don't know if it's been addressed now.
chuz Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 I had a 9-3 diesel as a company car from 2006-7. Very comfy and most popular car I have had for some time with the family. Only two issues with it 1. As Hutch says above, there is a good second or so delay after putting your toe down till anything happens on the turbo. When it does, it really does. Takes a bit of getting used to but you master it after a while. 2. I lost 4 tyres to blow outs over 12 months. Any pot hole seemed to kill a tyre. I thought it must just be me but another driver that I spoke to had the same problem. Other than that, never had a problem...

Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 I've got a 9-5 2.3 HOT Aero. The acceleration is staggering and the average MPG is 25. It is a fantastic, comfortable car and is a real wolf in sheep's clothing.
View From The Top Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 My last car was a Saab. Beast that used to eat up the motorway miles and offer excellent MPG.
Saint Paul C Posted 19 August, 2011 Share Posted 19 August, 2011 I've got a 9-5 2.3 HOT Aero. The acceleration is staggering and the average MPG is 25. It is a fantastic, comfortable car and is a real wolf in sheep's clothing. I've got one of these as well - a 2004 model with approx 70k miles on it. Mid range acceleration is considerable and it's very comfy with all the necessary modern luxuries including heated seats (v useful in Queensland), 6 disc CD with Harman & Kardon upgrade etc... Pretty reliable and therefore cheap to run.
Somewhere In Northam Posted 22 August, 2011 Share Posted 22 August, 2011 buy a mercedes, nothing else comes close the v6's are absolutly bulletproof, easily go past 200k with standard services (filter, plugs and oil changes) as for comfort, well, like driving an armchair
surrey1saint Posted 22 August, 2011 Share Posted 22 August, 2011 I think a 9-3 is something of a bargain at this time, because of the problems with the marque nearly disappearing. I have not owned a Saab for some years, but had a 900 some time ago, which was very good, relaible & seats were great.

Saint in Paradise Posted 8 September, 2011 Share Posted 8 September, 2011 (edited) Found this quote on :- http://www.saabscene.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t31657403.html "If it's a good-un all well and good, but a diesel Saab @6 yrs old may hit your pocket it you're unfortunate enough to encounter the regular problems like EGR valve, inlet manifold, alternator, dpf, dm flywheel etc. then you'd appreciate your warranty. Low miles well cared for cars always get a buyer in the end even if they're priced a bit high. See what you can haggle is my suggestion. Good luck, if you get a good-un they're great cars, honestly! chuz Posted 3 October, 2011 Share Posted 3 October, 2011 Cheers. Is this a 1.9TDI? What sort of MPG are you getting out of yours? Sorry, did not see this question..I was getting around 40mpg off the 1.9TDI. It was also one of the most efficient cars to have as a company car. Don't have it anymore because I run my own business now but seriously thinking about getting another one...
