View From The Top Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 Is it better to pre-book internal flights on Oz from the UK or just book up when you get there? No experience of flying in Oz. They'd be for Brisbane-Sydney-Brisbane.
Hockey_saint Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 I would book beforehand...it's soo damn expensive in Oz that you'd probably get them cheaper here. For example, I once took the train from New York to LA (4 days worth) and it was not even a 1/4 the price they quoted me to go from Sydney to Alice Springs (and that was STA Travel out there, one of the cheaper companies). Saint in Paradise Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 Have a look here:- http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g255055-c3001/Australia:Sydney.To.Brisbane.Coastal.Route.Drive.html Remember though that Aussie cops are red hot on speeding even if only a small amount over. They also have loads of speed cameras.

swannymere Posted 16 December, 2013 Share Posted 16 December, 2013 It's about 10-12 hours by car, i flew into Sydney on Christmas Eve, landed at 9pm picked up my hire car and was on the road by 10pm. I stopped about 5 times for food, naps and toilet breaks and was at my friends just outside Brisbane by 11am Christmas Day. The Australian police are anal about speeding and will use any means necessary to catch you, luckily they seemed to resting over the Christmas Eve/Christmas Day time i was driving. There are plenty of rest stops with toilets and most drive-thru's and motorway services stay open on Christmas Day. Car hire can be cheap if pre-booked and fuel is alot less than in the UK. Be aware that there are unmanned tolls in Sydney and the main bridge into Brisbane and you'll need to register by phone and pay, the car hire companies will charge you a premium on your card if you forget. I bought a SatNav chip off eBay here for less than £20 it only went wrong once and it was obvious so no problem. The journey is doable in a day but taking 2 or 3 would make it easier and more enjoyable.
Saint Paul C Posted 16 December, 2013 Share Posted 16 December, 2013 Living in Brissie and regularly traveling down to Sydney for work the are a huge number of flights between the 2 cities. Virgin, Qantas, Jetstar and Tiger all fly hourly between the 2 and booking flights is easy via http://www.webjet.com.au/ or http://www.skyscanner.com.au/. The price varies from day to day, and from flight to flight but you can usually get seats around the $100 mark (1-way), sometimes cheaper on Jetstar or Tiger. You wont save any money booking in the UK unless you bundle in with international flights. It's a whole days drive, approx 11hrs non-stop, and the roads on the northern NSW section around Byron - Yamba are none too flash. Nothing like the A34 - more akin to the A35 from Dorchester westwards at best with lots of 50KM/H zones heavily enforced by a zealous police force. Ping me if you want any more advice/help. Cheers, Paul.

Ohio Saint Posted 16 December, 2013 Share Posted 16 December, 2013 I misread the title as [h=2]Internal fights in Oz. Advice required.[/h] I was going to suggest a baseball bat.
tpbury Posted 16 December, 2013 Share Posted 16 December, 2013 Webjet are ok, but they chuck loads of admin fees on top, which makes their advertised price a bit false. Could try Fligtcentre.
swannymere Posted 16 December, 2013 Share Posted 16 December, 2013 You can just go to the website and pay online. You have 3 days in which to do it after the event I know that now but try getting any information out of the hire car people at 9.30pm on Christmas Eve with a queue behind you, as it was i got to the last manned toll tunnel and had a massive nosebleed whilst in the queue with nothing around to clear it up with, cue blood smeared arms and hands and slightly worried looking cashier! View From The Top Posted 16 December, 2013 Author Share Posted 16 December, 2013 Looks like we are going to drive as there will be 5 of us and do it over a couple of days both ways. I will, no doubt, be asking advice of best places to stop etc when we are further into the planning stage.
